That's an excellent way of expressing the need for YA! While reading two YA books last year as a 30y/o woman, I mainly thought how well these books would resonate with the youths and me if I was younger. Quicker paced story lines and thoughtprovoking plots made relatable by young protagonists are definitely plusses to start reading. Bookreports with limited choice in books to pick from definitely killed my motivation to read as a teenager
Oh, I was thinking about this today- glad I stumbled upon your video! This is pretty much the reason I started writing my novel in the first place. I loved stories about fairies, mysteries, folklore and intricate whimsical worlds growing up, but discovered quite early on that- as I moved into YA stories- none of the books I could find contained all of those things suited for my age and understanding of the world. So I took it upon myself to start crafting one like that, filled with all the magical creatures, life lessons, advice, customs, mistakes and wonder I had longed for so much to find in the stories I picked up. I got reminded of this a couple days ago, when my younger cousin asked me what my favourite series was growing up and I started rewatching it with her. Hopefully, by the time she's reached the age to be interested in YA books, I'll have it finished for her to enter another world of wonder
So true. Plenty of YA stories have complex issues at their heart and are not simple reads either. Plenty of adult books employ straightforward language. Language and syntax aren't the only factors in comprehension.
