Paul Madden takes a closer look at this incident, which was reported as: "...the high seas caused some of the cargo aboard the vessel to shift. The captain issued a distress call and the Norwegian authorities air lifted the majority of the crew to safety while the captain and three crew members remained aboard attempting to manage the situation. The vessel reportedly lost power later in the day causing the captain and remaining crew to abandon the ship.
The Norwegian Coastal Authority reports that the seas remain too high for its teams forcing them to remain at a distance and observe. Overnight, the largest workboat loaded on the deck of the Eemslift Hendrika fell overboard. It has been located a few nautical miles away. Norwegian authorities also reported that losing the cargo from the deck may have had a positive effect on the stability of the Eemslift Hendrika and might help to avoid the vessel capsizing."

I have been wondering if the cargo in the holds below shifted because you are right that clearly the deck cargo hand not shifted (until after they abandoned)
@oddmundlanglo7370
@oddmundlanglo7370 3 года назад
Tha cargo on deck did not shift. It was cargo (thrusters) in the hold below deck that shiftet. This incident also resulted in that two of the ballast tanks were damaged so water escaped into the cargo hold and probably furher increased the inbalance to starboard. The crew totaled to 12 persons. When the towlines finally were in place and the towing could start the shop was only 7 naut. miles from land end even closer to underwater shallow spots.

The helicopter doing the airlift isn't from the coast guard, but one of the oil industry standby-rescue helicopters that work together with the Norwegian air force rescue helicopters. The coast guard helicopter caring ships are mostly stationed up in the North.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the green work vessel that fell off and was also unmanned and adrift.... If someone boarded it in international waters, can they claim the boat as theirs??? Would this be considered a legitimate salvage... Finders keepers? I have no idea but was curious if anyone on here knows?

A little comment, you're pronouncing the name of the ship a bit too Ingaevonic (or perhaps Westphalian), the home port of the ship is Delfzijl on the Dutch side of the Dollart Bay/Ems Estuary, and there that Ems is called "Eems", with the "Ee" pronounced as the A in (English) "ABC" or in "made". The Eemslift ships obviously have taken the first part of that Dutch name from the river/estuary/straits near their homeport...Though as previously indicated, your way of pronouncing it is not entirely unknown in those parts, though if the owners had wanted it voiced that way, they probaly would have written it "Iemslift".

@@ExpeditionYachts Well, nobody really cares, but it helps to know how the people closest to the ship would pronounce it, part of the romance of looking at big ships passing by, with names of distant home ports and all that... especially when the ship became part of international news and different sources might pronounce the name in different ways.

If I'm not mistaken boat engines are usually in the aft or rear of the hull. All the boats on the deck appeared to pointing in the same direction putting all the heavy ends on the starboard side. Somebody should be fired.

@@ExpeditionYachts The CG of vessels on the deck were most likely port side of main vessel longitudinal centerline making for equilibrium if not it would have been noticed and reported prior to going to sea. In the video there was mention of load shift so I would believe that caused the starboard list.

G'day, As I understand it, most of the Cargo was carried INTERNALLY..., this thing has a Water-tight Doorway, at the Stern with an internal "Well" permitting Vessels to be floated inside, packed pretty tightly..., chocked there by Divers - and the Door closed & the Compartment pumped dry and the Bracings then heavily reinforced for the journey... All very expensive, of course. Apparently the Bracing, Chains, and Chocks let go on one of the Internally-stowed Cargo - which then bashed loose everything which was supposed to be secured in the Well-Deck. And that, was what generated the List - which probably then asymetrically stressed the Restraints on the Deck Cargo (where the Rates are cheaper - due to greater exposure to the Elements. Somebody's Insurance Company is about to increase their Premiums..., and then the current market price of such Luxury Yacht(let)s which need to hitch a ride on a Cargo Ship..., in order to actually GO AnySomewhere..., will therefore probably deflate markedly. Such is life, Have a good one. Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

For those who are baffled which cargo shifted to cause this. Look very good what is standing on the aft (2:36). It is a bock without a ship on it. That is something they will never do. That means there was already a ship missing with the first footage.
@arranwilliam9844
@arranwilliam9844 3 года назад
Does anyone else agree that the ship looks to high and narrow with too much weight on top? It shouldn't be listing that much, notice how its listing more to the right the same side where those heavy cranes are. Its a bad design ship should be a bit more wider and not as high. A 360 foot ship shouldn't have any problems in these types of seas.
@ExpeditionYachts
@ExpeditionYachts 3 года назад
I agree that this ship, properly ballasted, should have no problems. I think I read elsewhere that they may have had a problem with their water ballast system.
