That was very cool. I didn't spot the VFO A cabling error. Are you just that familiar with it that it stood out so well, or is there a rationale for determining it, like actual markings, color coding, or a proximity rule (i.e., the coax plugs into the closest jack on that side)? I, too, would like to see the video of you putting the active probe into the Eico probe body.

I am also so respectful of your work ... you make things look so easy ... I hope I can gain knowledge just to look after my own equipment ... my TS940 IS IN GREAT SHAPE ... BUT SLIGHTLY OFF FREQUENCY ON RX &TX ... I will be looking for a video where I will be abl to achieve a standard as good as yours ... Thanks for the videos it gives me a great insight into electronics ... Many Thanks again ... Mike ... M0csi ... Manchester. UK

Paul, Another fine video. Relatively easy one this time. The VFO A problem could have been avoided by taking an image before removing any cabling. Do make a video on fitting your RF active probe into that EICO probe body. Maybe a Tech Tuesday video? :-) I'm always amazed with the sheer quantity of test gear surrounding you when you open and close your videos. WB3BJU

Always nice to have the right tools and cables/connectors for the job...those pesky "TMP" coax connectors/jacks are hard to attach to if you want to measure something coming from or inject into a PCB. I added some homebrewed cables with BNCs on one end and the TMP on the other (RG-174 or similar small coax required). You can get the TMPs online and they're very reasonable and easy to solder/crimp onto coax. TNX for another great repair video Paul! 73 - Dino KL0S

Hello From Mark/N4VER. I have a Yaesu FT-920 that I had a”Freak Accident” with. My FT-920 has the outboard Behringer Eurorack UB-802 that has a pigtail cable between the EQ and the 8 pin microphone connector on the 920. I was going to disconnect the microphone pigtail and unplugged from the EQ and the tip of the plug made contact with the cabinet of another radio in which I heard a distinct “Pop”. The 920 still has normal receiver audio and the transmitter still keys manually via the “MOX Button” on the radio as well as the antenna tuner still seems to function normally. I have tried the EQ which still seems to function okay. I do realize that Yaesu has not supported this radio for quite some time now and I do realize that this radio is old - But there’s nothing out there brand new that I like as well as this FT-920 unless I maybe found a nice FT-1000MP which is still a pretty old radio. My question is, Is the audio circuit in this radio destroyed enough to trash this great old radio? I have actually watched your work with the FT-1000MP some time ago and remembered you in what you accomplished. Thanks & Best Regards DE Mark/N4VER Versailles,KY.

Hello Mr. Carlson, could I ask for your advice? I have Yaesu FT 1000MP reception works fine but as I start to transmit even when the power of 5W will close the fan and when I stop transmitting receive loss and after a while it resumes. Can a faulty 5V or 9V regulator do this? Or need to pass the source board? Thank you very much for your advice .... Peter

Another well documented repair. I did one of these some time back that had the same problem. The regulators seem to be a week point in this model. Like you I liberally apply heat transfer compound to the heat sink. I believe that may be what's making them go out so frequently, to much heat. Mike

I have tried a linear psu no change there. not sure if it is common on all ft 1000

In the previous repair of this model you designed and built a circuit board to replace the factory one. You had mentioned that those boards were a at times a bit of a problem. Did you ask the owner if he wanted to upgrade to the Carlson Board? Just seems like something to do so you won't see this one on your bench again for awhile.

Hi Mike, they were crossed, very east to spot visually. In any failure situation, always look at the modifications first, usually they are the culprit.

Hi Paul, I understand that, and I immediately began looking all around the (many) filters. But even now, looking at the “before” shot (21:15), it isn’t obvious to me that they were reversed; cables cross over each other all the time. I know I’m missing something, and I have a feeling I’m the only one, but what is it? Another great video; yours is the only channel for which I’ve seriously considered becoming a patron.
@darrylkelly7958
@darrylkelly7958 8 лет назад
You should have sold them a Carlson's Lab RF Switching Board... Edit: I spotted the cabling error. I'm in no way educated in such things but I reasoned that why would they cross the cables over the top of one another when there was a clear isolated path for each to follow if reversed. Stuck out like dogs balls.

Synthesized ,complex japanse HF rigs are probably, in my experience as a commercial radio and broadcast technician, the most complex and challenging devices to repair. They do often have good service manuals. This rig , I will guess without watching the whole video, has a audio PS bypass capacitor open or the board has an open trace. But Will watch the whole thing later and see, thanks for great videos, very skilled and well grounded in solid circuit theory, which is my pet peeve abut today's today's Voc school grads.....:(Ahhhh... a regulator....good.

Thanks for another great video. An Eico probe video would be nice. Small nitpick... The transition effects seem a hint garish. I would stick to traditional cuts, or fade to black and then fade back up (quickly) to show passage of time. Are they annoying? No. I just feel like traditional techniques work better. Nice Nixie porn! I have an older HP frequency counter than only goes officially to 300KHz (though is accurate to 600KHz). Great gear!

Hi Paul, Very nice! another great video. A yes from me on the probe video. It always fun to see how you trace down problems in a receiver. A suggestion for a short future video. :>) I don’t remember seeing an hi-pot in your lab video 7/14/14 (another good piece of lab equipment to have for tubes and vacuum variables etc.). Maybe you could do a build video and if you have one of the boards left over from the 7/06/15 Spectrum Analyzer Protection Circuit video you could actually see at what voltage it breaks down, or not, safely. You have done other hi voltage videos before so I think it would be appropriate. 73

Good troubleshooting Mr. Carlson. Those 78/79 series three terminal regulators require adequate heat sinking, especially when running at 75% of their rated output. These also have short circuit protection. from the Fairchild spec sheet, short circuit protection is around 250 ma. "Each type employs internal current limiting, thermal shut down and safe operating area (SOA) protection, making it essentially indestructible. If adequate heat sinking is provided, they can deliver over 1A output current. " Interesting that even with it's built in thermal (SOA) and short circuit protection, these devices can still fail due to inadequate heat dissipation and thermal compound not being used. 14V to 9V drop across the device at 700 miliamps would indicate that at least 3.5 watts has to be dissipated by the series pass element inside the device. That would require adequate heatsinking. Your test device monster heatsink looks about right, unless there is adequate air flow around the device from the fan.

I've been a Motorola Two-Way Communications dealer/service center since '77. With that said, that FT-1000MP is something which I would not want to contemplate having to perform repairs on. Gimme an old MoTrac, or something ancient from Comco any day!!! With all of that said, that Yaesu is definitely a nicely constructed piece of equipment, and you've once again accomplished a quality job of troubleshooting and repair.
