I've had issues with this radio keying up while a plug was in the external speaker/mic socket. This video just describes the problem, why it happens and how to take the radio apart.

I have done this to my ft60r as well. You can remove the grommet without taking the case off; just take a toothpick and pick it out of there. A little bit easier than a full disassembly.

No problem. As user RKWWWW posted below, only the silver screws near the base of the unit and the knob screws need to be removed. The small "00" black screws and belt clip screws don't need to be removed.

Thanks Brenton for that tip. I found a tiny screwdriver was useful to lever out that rubber grommet without cutting it from the speaker mic socket on my FT60. 73 Larry VK6CP

Thanks for the video, I have an FT-60 and I needed to open it to replace a worn keypad. If I hadn't watched this I wouldn't have any idea how to proceed. Cheers!

From memory there was a significant amount of thread locker on those screws, yes. So long as the correct sized screwdriver is used, and sufficient down force applied, they can be removed without damaging the head.

I think I would have modified the plug...maybe use a dremel tool small wire wheel to remove some of the plastic at the base of the metal part of the plug.

I hate when it does that. It needs to have a screw or something to keep the mic plug in place, like the older style Motorola radios. Thanks for making the video.

I just did mine, it worked great ! thanks ! although I did not need to disassemble anything ! just get yourself a small flat screwdriver and do it from the outside..

That was helpful thanks! I hope soldering the power connector is as easy.

That may help with some plugs, but the plug I use for APRS has a metal lip around the base (as does the plug in the video). The inner section of the gasket is about 0.5mm thick and presses on this metal lip causing the plug to pop out very easily.

This Mod will give TX 137-174Mhz and 420-470Mhz and is verified for US spec radios only. Mod involves removal of an extremely small surface mount resistor. Do not attempt if your skills are not up to it. Irreparable damage could occur to the radio. Mod does not make radio compliant for CAP use; it may also void your warranty. Do not ever transmit on a frequency you are not licensed for. This mod is provided for reference only. Performing this mod will erase all memories and re-set the radio. Perform at your own risk! Instructions Remove belt-clip and battery Remove the 4 screws (2 silver and 2 black) in the battery compartment. Remove antenna and pull off the knobs With tweezers or needle nose pliers, carefully remove the rubber gaskets around the knob shafts. Unscrew the two split nuts from the knob shafts Take out the rubber plug for the mic and DC sockets and swivel it around 90 degrees. Carefully remove the body of the radio from the front panel. Ease it out from the bottom first making sure you don’t damage the rubber waterproof seal that goes all around it. Separate the LCD section from the front section. Remove R1164. This is found on the right side of the radio, on the board just above the keypad area. reassembly is the reverse of the disassembly.

+Terry Vanderpuke If you're going to use someone else's words verbatim, you need to mention your source. Plagiarism is an ugly thing. I understand that this is an informal forum, but it's still incredibly rude to give ppl the impression you wrote something you didn't.

Me again. The mod went fine. I had something odd happen when I was reassembling the unit. I started to panic because I couldn't find the two smallest screws. After searching my work area I noticed they were already fully installed in the screw holes. I then realized I had no memory of removing them in the first place. My conclusion is either the it's not necessary to remove them to do the mod or I'm going crazy. Perhaps both.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you mean the screws that hold the belt clip on? I suspect they don't need to be removed, but I haven't confirmed it.

Did you find the screws holding on the belt clip to be difficult to remove? I've heard that the lock-tite on the screw threads can be a bear.

What bands do you want? I'd say just get a Wouxun/Baofeng/etc off ebay, they're easy to get with more than just ham Tx on them. I have no idea how to do a wideband Tx mod on this radio sorry.

I simply took a knife and shaved some of the rubber from the plug. Took less than 30 seconds.

I would have just shaved off a bit of the plastic around the jack plug rather than remove the grommet from the radio.

Rather than disassemble the radio, I found that this rubber grommet can be removed with a utility knife. Gently.

What a disappointment - I thought this was going to be a tutorial for the Mars mod that Terry mentioned below. Well, *he* didn't mention it technically, since he copy and pasted someone else's post from another forum, but you know what I mean. Would you please make a video for the mars mod? Thanks.

+RationallySkeptical Great job...You want help doing the MARS mod but you are talking smack about the two Elmers that could help you out. You sir are a disappointment to the hobby.

TheQwik512 At no point was I "talking smack" about any person. I merely stated the video was a disappointment. You're an idiot. THAT is talking smack. See the difference? And who is the ACTUAL disappointment to the hobby - someone who makes an innocent comment like I did or a sanctimonious ass like you who insults and demeans brand new hams. YOU are an embarrassment to the hobby.

I have since found a much better solution. Gigaparts will do the mod to any radio you buy from them which gets around the whole problem of voiding the warranty, which is exactly what happens when anyone does the mod themselves.
