Coming from a guy that just picked up the FT-710 yesterday and was completely confused, you've helped me a great in learning a lot of the functions! I'm limited in what I'll be using but what you covered was great! Than you so much for a great job!
As a RU-vidr myself, I can appreciate the work and effort you put into this tutorial. Plenty of detail, done at a good pace, and in a very calm, professional manner. Great job and thanks!
I just got my new FT-710. Before it arrived, I watched this video to familiarize myself with it. Yaesu should include your videos with every radio they sell. It is a wonderful "quick-start" guide to setting it up and getting on the air. Keep up the good work, and thank you!
Just ordered my 710 last night, getting it on Friday. As with some of the others I watched this video along with some others to prepare for the arrival. Your video is detailed and will serve as a template for the setup.
Actually it's # 3 in the Sherwood list . If you read the footnotes the elecraft was disqualified as it was given to him ( substantially modified). When he tried the tests on several other retail versions of the same radio it failed to duplicate the outstanding results achieved in his original tests !
A Yaesu ft-710aess just became mine. The 3rd of March 2023, an operator left me the radio to check it out because he was having trouble. He did not want to mail it to Yaesu if it was just something simple. The radio tested out perfectly. The problem must be with his power supply or antenna. I have tried to contact the operator using email, telephone number, cellular number, text. I get no answer. On the 3rd of January, I dusted off the original box that laid on a shelf ten months and took out the radio. I have it connected and I am receiving incredibly good. I have worked on amateur radios, business radios, made power supplies, antennas, manual tuners, converted radios from one service to another, and setup repeater networks for the local services. But, I hold no radio license at all. I have only transmitted into a dummy load. Now that I have this beautiful radio, I may be changing that. I may either sell it or get my amateur radio license.
Very Helpful video. Thank You. Just got my FT-710 this past week, put an OCF Dipole antenna from Palomar this evening and hung in between 2 palm trees (I live in Central Florida) First guy I worked was a Parks on the air ham in Colorado. Now that I've configured my radio by using your video, I'm sure it will work even better. Thanks again!!!
One of the things about the 991A is the uhf/vhf capabilities. I wanted a Radio That can do everything. it turns out their are not many radios that do that. When I started to think about HF, I had to let go of the fact that I could not have a radio that could do everything. Thus when I found the ICOM 7300 I just fell in love with the waterfall and just the sound quality. Now there is a new competitor and it has very nice features, ft710.
@@frankwc0o That's why I'm still wanting the 991A...so I can have an all-in-one radio. The waterfall isn't that big of a deal to me. No one has the 991A right now. I've checked all the major players and nobody has it. 😓
Yes that’s what I did got the 710 like the 991a little less than money too many bells and whistle’s 710 will get the job done for me real happy has great features🇺🇸🦿
@@RESlusher I also got the 991A in September 2022. I just can't justify getting the 7300 or FTdx10 or 710 when I can have a shack in the box instead for the same price
I got an FT-DX10 right after I got my general and just ordered the 710-Field for the garage, this is a great video, very helpful to me as a beginner to watch a skilled radio operator. Please keep these videos coming.
Best video for a newbie on the FT710..thanks...I followed along with my unit beside the screen. I learned that I seem not to have the antenna set incorrectly because I am not picking up anything on the 20m band. Now I have to check the antenna out.
As soon as I sell my Kenwood ts850s I will have enough to buy one of these fine machines. Thanx for the video, I am now not so intimidated by this radio, I was worried, but not now not so much, looks easier than I was anticipating!!... Thanx!!
Frank, I'd like to add a Thank You also. Just got my General, getting the radio set up and this is a huge help. Thank you for your time and effort, it's greatly apprecaited Sir. -73 Jason
Thank you for your video, I just received my FT-710 yesterday. Unpacked it today, I am comparing to my IC-7300. So far i am not impressed. Thank You again for your great video!
Wow I just like to say that you did a great video, excellent tutorial you took your time in a very calm manner very easy to understand, I don’t have an HF radio yet I’m studying for my General but I’ll definitely will make the FT 710 my first HF radio, it seems very easy to work on and following to tutorial even easier, so thank you again and I’ll be definitely following your videos and I hope you make more on the FT 710 ( KO4SPS )
This is a great help to a newbie, this is my first HR radio and I have only had my general for three weeks and my technical seven week ago .Its videos like this that help me to understand the brotherhood of what is ham radio..Thanks for your time hope to see you in the waves.
I hold no radio license. However, I acquired one of these beautiful radios after it was abandoned for ten months. I connected it and can not believe just how good it receives! Perhaps it may be time for me to get an amateur radio license. What privileges does the entry level license have that can be utilised on this gorgeous radio?
Frankly, as someone who just bought this radio and am basically new to HF, the last thing I'm going to do is erase all the default settings which allowed me to get on the air in about a half hour. I'll tweak this thing later.
Great video. Trying to decide on ft 710 vs ic 7300. Can't find anything to dislike about either, but do like the ability to add external display to the 710.
I like it for the price point. I like my IC 7300. But for a little more money, the FT dX10 is probably the better value. that radio comes on sale often. Way better audio.
HI Frank. Is the noise it makes every time you turn the volume knob up from zero normal? It's very annoying and I don't know if it's a defect, like a damaged potentiometer or the radio was born like this. Thank you, very much.
If you mean like static, then yes. You can lower that noise with the RF ("gain for the antenna") knob until you don't hear the static or lower the AF to lower the noise.
If I had to choose between a 710 or the DX 10, it would be the DX 10. I have a DX 10, the audio is amazing for the price. When the 710 came out, it was only $100 difference between the 710 and the DX 10 it was a no-brainer, DX 10 is the radio. But there are some considerations for the 710. The 710 is more portable and technically less expensive and people say that it has a very similar audio profile than that the DX10.
At 20.20 you moved the vfo away from where someone was talking to demonstrate the RF gain feature? This tells us nothing ? You want to be listening to someone talking , especially a noisy band , moreso 160, or 80 metre. Turn the volume AF gain all the way up or high up then reduce the RF gain for a comfortable copy . This was basic stuff before the days of DNR and the likes . Sorry to say this was a missed opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of the RF gain on this rig . I know the ftdx10 has a good RF gain, but because this is a pure SDR I'm unsure? My icom ic7300 and I know the ic 7610 have very poor RF gain features , I'm hoping to find a video that can demonstrate how good or otherwise the RF gain is on this ft710 . Otherwise a comprehensive demo .
Great video. I picked mine up yesterday and I'm using an external antenna tuner. The mAT-30. Once a band is tuned, do I leave the "tune" light/indicator on?
Please do NOT reset this radio from the menu.....turn the radio off....press and hold the two pie shaped buttons at the bottom either side of the VFO knob and while holding press the power on....that is a factory reset....with the factory settings....not what you did !
hello. I found your video it is very well explained. but I have a question about this. 34:25 If I assign a name and set the settings to name instead of frequency in display type. Where does the name appear then? Instead of the small display, M-01 or instead of the large frequency display?
I have been watching all of your beginners guides even for radios I won't use. I just really like seeing all the ins and outs that these radios will do.
Great introductory video for a newb like me! I just picked up an FT-710 on sale and now trying to figure out how to use it. Thanks for not going straight into PhD level material.
Why doesn't anyone ever mention on 7300 u have to have max RF gain to give accurate sig rpt. ??? If u back of rf gain the s meter goes towards 0. Therefore u just lost accurate s meter readings. Thats why i dont use icom anylonger. On yaesu you back off rf gain tillbthe agc quits moving the s meter and thats their peak reading.
Hello Frank. Is the transmitting frequency range open so that you can transmit in the complete shortwave range or is transmission only possible in the specified amateur radio bands? Is there in the meantime already the possibility of the MARS mode?
@@frankwc0oThanx for taking the the time to do all this Frank .I can confirm you can get the radio wide banded so you can transmit on 11m. Naturally get it done by a Yaesu licenced seller so it keeps the warranty intact. I'm in the UK. Rich
been looking at this one for a while and your vid has made me decide..ordering it in a couple days thanks forthe informative vid. Rick KA4ZGU ham since 1968 started as WN4SOX
