The first accessory bought was the Yaesu soft pouch and the Windcamp Powerpole-adaptor. This is a must to instal because the original little yellow plug is so sensibel for damaging, and the pouch to protect your expensive gear. This is an item every FT-817 / 818 owner should install immediately.

Some useful accessories there. I've the 817ND here just before the 818 came out, and £45 off. I see the 818 has a TCXO fitted, somebody said I had a bit of drift when I operated ssb on 2m outdoors one day so that seems a good thing. I don't know why they upped the power to 6 Watts. I'd be tempted to see if it could be turned down to 5 Watts. I put a dust cover on my SO239 too. All my aerials have BNC plugs and RG58U. I put a small heatsink on the earth connection. I believe in keeping things as cool as possible. A single 455 kHz xtal is my cheap c.w. filter. And finally a h/b leather case for some protection. 73, G4GHB.

Thank you! Adding a heat sink sounds like an interesting idea that I should explore. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video.

That power pole adapter is pretty sweet. Windcamp has some really good stuff.

Nice overview and suggestions. I've got 2 original 817's. The second owner of both. One is very well used and the other is like new. Just love the feel of the damn things. Great size and weight. They've both been fantastic and have yet to let me down. I have a 300hz CW filter in one and the 500hz CW filter in the other. Both are unobtainium but make a huge difference in preformance. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for checking it out. I agree about the size and weight of them rigs. That is really what drew me to the radios. Ideal for backpacking, etc.

if you can find one for sale. avoid the online resellers in japan. there radios are set for there power systems, and radio freq. will not be the same as what your country uses. plus if a problem. all you can do is cry.

only change to the windcamp power input mod first it is a very clean mode that does not change the radeo. can be removed with NO damage to the radio. but if you use a length of threaded rod to hold in place with a not/ washer between the radio body and “under” side of the adaptor. but still long enough to just stick out one can place a conection for a ground wire tight to the radio’s chassis. a guaranteed no gap set up. and it holds the input adaptor solid to the body. and between the chassis and adaptor one of those stick on rubber foot thingy. no flex when plugging in or out. this gives the adaptor three points of contact. screw, power plug, rubber foot thingy.

I like the vid a lot! .. I had not thought of the connector cover on the back.. even though I use the front connector most of the time. One thing that might be nice to add to the back connector cover, would be a 50 load so if you happen to mess up, you won't try to send power out to an open but would have something to help protect the finals.

The FT-818 is tiny and lightweight yet oddly kinda rugged… will be interesting to see if Yaesu come up with a new contemporary version. Maybe 20W all band all modes with similar form factor would make a great portable/POTA/SOTA/QRP rig?

I’m looking forward to see what Yaesu comes out to replace the 818. Hopefully something in the same size and form. Like you said tiny lightweight and oddly rugged. Thanks for watching!

@@Scout75PortableRadio Yaesu is the Nikon of the radio world as far as I can tell. Well built, generally pretty good ergonomics, not necessarily the first mover in latest technology, a bit deaf to customer feedback and requests, but a solid choice.

Thanks, Jeff! Yeah its a fun little rig. I'm having a lot of fun with it. Just wish Yaesu still made the 857 or better yet, come out with a modernized version. QRP is fun, but 100 watts would be great.
