Very good the manual doesn't tell How to switch side bands. This answered my question about it. I just got this new Yaesu FT-891. It's a very nice rig for portable and mobile use.
Just had this problem yesterday. Haven’t even done a search yet to get the answer and RU-vid happened to recommend it to me today. Things that make you go hmmm. Nevertheless just what I needed so thanks for the video.
Mike, thanks for the video. Is a great help. I have the 857. I've had it for years, love it. My goto radio. Came across the 891 and fell in love all over again. So, my winded point is that your video has been a great help. Thank you. Keep up the great work. Have fun. Be safe. '73.
I already knew that. I thought you might have had an easier and quicker way to do it. Yaesu sure dropped the ball on that particular function. Hopefully, it will be corrected in a firmware update.
they legit drop the ball on a few things of this radio that are just Common sense. stuff like changing the mode they have you using the VFO knob... isn't that what the freakin multi function know is for ?? I have emailed them about this and begging them to fix certain aspects of this radio that people who are playing about but they're not going to do it unless we all get together and and email them and harass them to fix it
Just bought a 891. Tuned into the Friday night top band net on 1.903 USB (USB is used as the majority are using Clansman gear, Couldn't change the mode. Thank you for posting this. Ian. G0YAP
Just got this rig have to learn how to setup everything just learning first radio, plugging in and knowing what goes where lol can't find any videos showing this
User manual vagueries aside, on a radio this compact, I guess you just can’t have a knob or a button for everything and the auto SSB setting caters for most SSB operation. I have one for mobile use and agree it’s a great radio for the £.
thanks for the video i‘m glad you made this clear - oh wow, how uncomfy! I personally consider this rig a frankenstein from what i‘ve seen. We have so much more intelligent user interfaces nowadays…
Hi Mike, i dont have a 891 but seriously looking at this and the Xeigu G90 (yes I know its not a 100watts) for mobile/sota/mobile use. I noticed the vid is now 4 years old, are you still using the 891 and whats your long term thoughts on this radio? Thanks and keep up the good work! (New subscriber M0KTY)
Hello, I've long since sold this radio. I wasn't a big fan of it to be honest, due to the countless menu items to do simple things. I sold it on in 2020. I wouldn't mind a G90 myself but can't bring myself to part with the X6100 to make way for one yet :) all the best and 73'
I'm coming from an Alinco DX-70 which I thought was too menu driven but the 891 is far worse. The features are so useful it's hard to not like it anyway.
Thank you!! But wow how silly - if you want to listen to utility stations on general coverage you have to select USB this way as SSb defaults to lsb. But then all the bands default to the manual setting and navigating those menus is not fun. Thanks tho for your helpful video
Thanks for this Mike. Q: Can you setup a quick way to adjust power output? Although the radio is a few years old now this seems be a real go-to for mobile and field work. 73
That's a great question and as far as I know, unable to try it as I've now sold on the 891 - I'm not entirely sure if you can setup a quick access power adjustment. It's a very popular radio for portable ops now for sure. 73' stay safe.
Very useful, thanks. I see: not to be able to bring back up the oscilloscope screen on the Ft891. A video on this would be great. Am sure it’s simple but not for this non- tecki type !🙂😫
Thanks for helpful Tip - - I was trying to get USB on 20 meter but it was stuck on LSB ??? ( Had My BFO on LSB and not AUTO) But with your tip got it back on AUTO :)
I've forgotten way too much over the years so please excuse my ignorance, but I assumed that you would always operate in USB and didn't realize it was dependent on the band. Is there a quick explanation for when either LSB or USB is appropriate? If it's not quick (I really don't want to inconvenience you too much) and you're aware of a website that explains this as well, I would sure appreciate the explanation or link! I've had my General for a few years now but haven't done anything with it, and am just now getting motivated to buy an FT-891 and play around with HF. Now I'm wondering if I should since I have this question for you 🙄🙂
anything below 10MHz is LSB and anything above is USB ie' 14.275.50MHz USB.. 4MHz above 10Mhz = USB. easy way above is upper and below is lower. It's relative but that's the way it supposed to be. Generally speaking it is but not chiseled in stone. Just a general rule of thumb to keep it moving instead of grumbling among "I was here first" type hams. ✌Be sure to consult your ARRL(Available for download everywhere) current band plan and as always your mileage may vary. May the DX be with you
@@fubarsnafu4994 I sure appreciate you getting back to me, and I can remember that easy enough! I still don't know how everyone but me knows how to convert Meters to MHz so easily, but I guess that comes with time. I have the band plan printed up and on the wall staring at me, (I think I've heard it laughing at me in fact) and for some reason it's not sinking in....but I'll get there I'm sure! Thanks again!!
@@twobikesandadrone MHz to Meters.. google How to make a 20m diapole antenna. The formula you use to calculate length will explain that. Better if you see it for your self. Keep reading and stay active. Listen to the old heads and avoid opions. Don't fall into the money pit. Listen if your not gonna key down. But remember that mic only works if you use it. Most of all enjoy.
@@fubarsnafu4994 I have unofficially chosen you as my RU-vid Radio Mentor, not only because of your wise advice, but also because of that telling username!! 🤔😄 I'll especially try to stick to the money pit advice, by using wire vs verticals, but I'm going to splurge with a new FT-891, because I just can't help myself.....and because it's fairly small and rugged for doing POTA/SOTA stuff with the motorcycles. It would be helpful however, if you would make some videos on your channel, but if not, please check my channel in a few months since I may do a playlist of ham radio stuff documenting a new guy getting into the hobby. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities for you to continue to mentor me 😄
This might sound silly ? But if in auto does this rig switch to usb on 5mhz (60) metres? As it should be , or would you have to select usb manually? Dose it even work on 5 mhz or does it need a mod to get full access to 60metre? I am quite interested in this rig for mobile/ p . Tks any info is appreciated.
Most radios in the UK have 60m locked out as it’s only really for full license holders. The 891 I believe has to be modified to even show 5mhz. Can’t really say much else as I’ve since long gotten rid of the radio, didn’t get on with it at all. Cheers and 73’
@@OntheMicwithMike Ok thanks for that . My ftdx3000 is also locked out , which i sort of knew, so thats ok . I'll ast questions at the store ,see what they say ? I am thinking more along the lines of the 818 now anyway. Thanks for your time and effort 73 , mm0udi.
@@robduncan599 I am sorry I couldn't be any help really. But the 818 is a great little radio, I have the 817ND and I'd never part with it. 73' stay safe.
Hello , does this radio save receiver width settings when you save a frequency to memory ? For example, select any ssb frequency with the receiver width set to 3khz wide. Save it to a memory channel. Go to another band , turn the radio off then back on, then recall that memory channel. Did it save the width at 3khz ? Or did it default back to the factory 2.4 for that channel you just saved ? Thanks
All Yaesu had to do was put a dedicated Mode button on the radio ... But No , They had to made it user Unfriendly , Making it much more difficult to operate ... What idiot at Yaesu thought this was a good idea .
Is there an easy way to switch to general coverage mode? because the band changer only shows the Amateur bands. Iam assuming that once you select a Ham band you cannot tune outside that band?
Sure. Just tune to the frequency that you want. Also, you can set memory channels to any frequency. Also, there is a way to change frequency by 500 khz per click. Tunes very fast, I think you hold down the select knob.
I am new to hf and am wondering why you would want to use lsb on a frequency that is agreed upon that usb is to be used? Probably a silly question but there must be an advantageous reason for doing so. Could it be that you may copy the other station more clearly by utilizing the opposite mode?
Great question. No real reason for it’s use, but however on experience funnily enough, when having a qso amongst friends believe it or not on some occasions it’s been less noisy on LSB compared to USB. But yes, no real reason to switch only I did have some questions regarding this switch over from freebanders etc. 73’ :)
If you use SSB digital modes like FT8, it will need to be on USB, even when on 40 & 80m. I know Data Upper or Data Lower solves that. However, I find a difference in the stations I hear when on SSB vs Data mode.
Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm using WSJT-X, and each time I TX, it goes into D-U mode instead of SSB. Then I manually switch back (the BAND key) to SSB and it receives fine until I TX again then it is back into D-U. Please help!!!
Yes, thanks for the video. My comment is that labeling the option as "BFO" is misleading. Although if you think about it, that is what happens. My request is this : I would like to save the setting when I save the frequency in Memory. I am able to save it (perhaps) when the frequency is on the Ham bands. What about saving the BFO mode (upper sideband) for a frequency not in the ham bands, say 2182 USB. ?
I’ll be perfectly honest, I’ve no idea. Reason being is I’ve long since sold this radio on, as I didn’t get on with it at all. But hopefully someone in the comments can assist. 73’.
@@answerguy Hi Answerguy, initially you will need a AC to 12v DC transformer. The HF antenna is dependent on budget, space and ambition. I can recommend the MAT30 automatic tuner. That's a basic start to your enquiry.
That is what I was looking for a short cut. Via description of video I kinda thought that's what he was getting at but I know the menu functions.. How did you program the button and can I sacrifice one of the program buttons on the front to do just that? why don't the big three figure these functions out in the factory? Something so simple missed beta? I would love one button BFO.
Thanks mate for very useful video .....I was VERY upset to Yaesu looking for the trick !! I love my FT891 but this is a great issue !! 73' cheers from Giorgio IV3EPO
Same as mine, they all do. The radio is set to the default values for the bands, for example usually bands from 20m upwards use USB and below that it’s LSB that’s used. But it is a bit of a faff changing bands, would make more sense allowing a key press change in the menu rather than diving into pages of menus.
Or they can just add it in to the mode menu 🙄🤦🤷 I have email them about this to just add it to the mode menu. I swear it's like 5 people develop the firmware for this radio and none of them communicated with each other.
Yeah I just got my FT-891 and I couldn't believe this was the default design. What idiots. Do they think we're living in the 1970s when BFOs were the rage?
@@OntheMicwithMike ah, do you notice less sound quality at all? I have a 7300 as well and while much better user interface it seems less “easy listening” than the 891. The audio is just a bit more abrasive.
That's the big turn off to software defined radio...........You have to go through too many menu steps to get what you need, and there are way too many menu items.
I agree about massive amount of menus, but you can't deny the ft891 once adjusted to how you want it is one awesome rig. Just got mine after months of hesitations seeing same negative comments. No regrets here! Love it!! 73.
You'd think it would be that easy, the manual even states that if you long press the mode button you can switch between USB and LSB. Which it doesn't - also the mode button isn't in the location the manual suggests. I wonder who does their manuals for them haha.
