Yaesu FT-891: TX Audio Settings with MD-100, M-70, or Hand Mic

This video shows the TX audio settings I use for my Yaesu FT-891. I use the same settings for both the hand mic and the MD-100 desk mic.
Don’t forget to set the switch on the hand mic to position 2, which emphasizes high voice frequencies, improving intelligibility during noisy band conditions. But, couple with the EQ settings I use, I still get plenty of low frequency response in my transmit audio, with position 2 selected on the microphone. Note that the MD-100 desk mic also has switches on the bottom of the mic base that allow you to emphasize high or low frequencies, or no emphasis at all, which means that your TX audio is determined solely by the EQ settings in the radio.

Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you found it helpful. Set the switch on the back of the hand mic to position 1 for rag chew or position 2 for punch. I actually leave mine set to position 2. The settings in my video are intended to get you close, but you still might need to tweak a bit, according to your own voice. I used the AF-FFT scope in the FTdx10 to illustrate the portions of the audio spectrum that are important for good SSB audio. You can see that in the video at this link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HLxvgfUs-TM.html 73, Doug

I’m glad you like my approach to TX audio. Some don’t. They think boosting is wrong. But I boost three frequency ranges and run the mic gain lower. That’s actually cutting too. But this method also allows me to add the speech processor into the mix at a lower intensity, not sounding so much like it’s there, but boosting the overall output of the transmitter just the same. It’s not the same method that I use in the music world, but in the music world I’m not working with only 3,000 Hertz of audio spectrum. Thanks for joining the Patreon team to help continue this mission. 73, Doug

The information in this video is so underrated! I neglected to set up my radio when I first got on the air because all I wanted to do was make contacts. Since watching Doug's series on the 891 I learned more about the radio than any other channel or operating blindly on my own for over a year. I have been running the settings mentioned in this video for over a month and on several QSOs I've been questioned on my Mic and Radio, or what kind of mixer am I running. People are in disbelief when I tell them that its all stock with some internal EQ adjustments. I have a modest set up just using Packtenna Dipole that I put up and take down when I operate and running normally at about 80 watts. I've noticed that I have made more consistent DX contacts, breaking pile ups and more intelligibility when giving my callsign, which was being heard incorrectly. So USE THESE SETTINGS and give it a try. Thanks!

Hi Bill! I’m so glad my settings worked for you. Everyone’s voice is slightly different, but the settings for my voice should get anyone close enough to tweak for their own voice. Many have told me that my exact settings worked for them. Those settings also work for the M-100 or M-70. Then use the high-cut switch on the bottom of the desk mic for rag chew but don’t use high-cut when working DX. Thanks for letting me know. 73, Doug

That’s great, Doug! I trust that you saw my video about operating the FT-891 using the Memory Tune approach. People say the menu is difficult. I rarely ever touch anything but the Multiknob and the VFO, by programming 2 or 3 favorite frequencies and modes for each band, then I just recall a memory channel and tune away if I wish to work a different frequency. You will see the memory number change to MT (Memory Tune). When you finish, press the Multiknob until you see MT change back to the memory number. Rotate the Multiknob to recall a different memory. I look forward to hearing about how much fun you have with that FT-891. 73, de N4HNH 73, de N4HNH

Watched this last night at work, used your suggested setting today. Worked a few stations tonight on 40m and was told that my audio was outstanding. Is it really, I asked? The guy (DL1DGS) recorded me and replayed it back. It sounded excellent. Made 3 further contacts and all reporting great audio. One in particular saying he thought I was using a high end transceiver. Didn’t know if I should take that as a compliment or not lol. Thanks again.

Hi John! Hand mics do fine. A desk mic has a slightly different sound. To some extent it’s because you aren’t holding the desk mic it in your hand when you speak into it. You don’t get any noise from your fingers twitching and such. You will most likely not speak too close, thus breathing sounds are minimized. It has a lock, so you don’t have to touch it to talk. Just key it, let go, and speak. Then press again when finished. This eliminates handling noise. And it just feels more like a base station. I think there is a psychological aspect too. I think we tend to speak with more confidence when using a desk mic. It’s like we switch to our base station voice when speaking into a desk microphone. Great question! 73, de N4HNH

Doug there is a menu you didn't mention in your movie this is 11-09 SSB TX BPF. According to the Yaesu manual it allows to choose among 4 bandwidths. Default is 300-2700. If i want to extend the bandwidth for local QSO in SSB will it be a good choice to increase the bandwidth from 300-2700 to 200-2800 or more ? Will i have something to change in the EQ menu ? For the moment modulation is very good but i would like to have more bass and more clarity. I think a too large bandwidth is not effcient for DX but in a local QSO it may be very pleasant. What is your opinion about it ? Thanks a lot for your answer 73 F4CGK

I leave at at 300-2700. Watch the video about Power Spectral Density. More bass doesn’t necessarily equal more clarity. It works against clarity. If your voice requires more bass and you do go wider, you might need to boost 1300 and 2400 more to balance it. 73, de N4HNH

Hi Doug from France . Do you have a better modulation with the MD-100 desk microphone or with the stock microphone ? Do you think that a HEIL PR 781 microphone would be a good choice too for your YAESU FT 891 ? 73 F4CGK
@n4hnhradio

Great question! The audio reports were virtually identical between the MD-100 and the hand microphone. I have never tried the PR-781 with the FT-891. It would take a cable adapter. But I think it would probably work fine. I would probably use the TX audio settings I use for my FTdx5000MP, since the PR-781 naturally boosts low frequencies and needs help with the high frequencies. It’s great to hear from you. Thanks for your question! 73, de N4HNH

I'm very grateful for this video, so many thanks. I've entered the settings you've shown here, but I need some advice on setting the ALC correctly. Can you please advise on how to do this?

@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
Have a friend listen to your audio and ask them if you sound distorted or if your audio is too weak. I have my mic gain set at 30 with the processor set at 20. I have a strong voice projection so 30 is enough. For others 35 or 40 might be needed for mic gain. I can’t imagine needing to set the mic gain higher than 50 though. 73, de N4HNH

@@n4hnhradio Thank you for the reply. When the meter is set to ALC, though, do you know how far it should be peaking to when talking, please?
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
The ALC meter should go to approximately half scale as you speak. There is a mark halfway and the bar thickness changes to a thin line. When you speak into your mic, the meter should deflect to the halfway mark, but not too much beyond halfway. Note that you cannot completely rely on the ALC meter. The meters are never dead on. Neither are compression meters. The meters might get you close, but it is best to verify on air with a friend who knows your voice. 73, de N4HNH

@@n4hnhradio Thank you so much for your replies - I now think I've got everything set up as good as possible. Did you find the frequency response of the stock Yaesu mh-31 mic' a bit poor? IE - EQ settings not making a great deal of difference wherever they were set? I now need a different mic', but I'm not sure what to get? I'd prefer an hand mic', but a desk mic' would be OK.

My MH-31 works just fine. I get consistent compliments about my TX audio. When I used my FT-891 as a base station, I used my MD-100 desk mic. It works with the same EQ settings as the hand mic. The Yaesu mics are optimized for two-way voice communications. 73, de N4HNH

Everyone’s voice is different but these settings get most people close. Be sure to enable the high-emphasis switch on the mic. And speak 3 finger widths from the mic. If you close-talk a mic, you get more bass response. That’s why a bass singer eats the mic. Don’t do that with ham radio.

I never use setting 1. My settings assume setting 2. 2-way communications needs the intelligibility that happens at around 2,000 to 2,500 Hertz. But ultimately match your voice type.

You could perform a factory reset or consult the operating manual, which shows the default for each menu item. You could also disable the mic EQ and you will sound the way you did with a new FT-891.

@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
It depends upon your voice, style of operating, and microphone choice. For the stock mic, 300-2700 if you need to break a pileup or if you have a deep/bassy voice. 200-2800 for general use. Try 100-2900 if your voice isn’t bassy. More importantly, the settings I use are for my voice. They might get you close but not necessarily exact. Use them as a starting point and ask a friend to listen to you over the air to finalize the settings. 73, de N4HNH

Thanks David! It’s great to know your name now. Are you using a peak-reading watt meter? For SSB, you need a peak-reading watt meter. The built-in meter on the FT-891 will not likely give an accurate reading while you are talking. Whistle into the mic and it should provide a better reading. Be aware also that SWR affects power output. If the SWR is high, the radio automatically “folds back” the power output, to protect the RF output transistors. 73, Doug

Maybe Heil can send you a Pro7 Headset (which I have) and I would love to compare my settings with what you come up with... Everyone says I sound great but several said I am too bassy.. I am going to experiment with the 15-07 EQ3 Freq setting to see if I can add more tenor to my sound. Great video, easy to follow, and I have learned/ reminded of several things. Hopefully tweaking the 15-07 setting will upgrade my SSB effectiveness. You are right, when I use the Yaesu hand mic, people say I sound great. I have the Pro7 because I am having trouble with my hearing. God bless. Great instructional video. K5BXM

No I haven’t, but one of my VIP Patreon supporters used the settings I provide for the FTdx10 hand mic with his M-70, and he sounds great. The TX audio equalizers in most newer Yaesu radios are virtually identical. The settings in my FTdx10 are based upon the settings in my FT-891. Everyone’s voice is different but my settings should get you close. You can then tailor to precisely fit your voice. Remarkably, many of my viewers have reported that my settings worked for them without any additional tweaks. 73, de N4HNH

@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
I generally use IPO. It lowers the noise floor while improving the cross-modulation characteristic of the receiver. I try to work the noise floor down to S0 or S1. IPO first. With a transceiver that has 6, 12, and 18 dB attenuation options, I try 6dB of attenuation if IPO wasn’t enough to drop the noise floor to S0 or S1. With the FT-891 there is only one attenuation level and it can be too much, unless I’m mobile, fighting power line noise, engine noise, etc. Using the FT-891 as a base station, I will use IPO and RF Gain. I also set DNR to algorithm 9. Reducing the noise in the front end of the receiver helps the DSP do a better job. In the video at this link, I talk about using IPO before attenuation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uh332X0YEDs.html 73, de N4HNH
