It took 20 years for me to upgrade to a new HF base station. Why? I enjoyed my Yaesu FT-920 so much, especially after I installed the INRAD SSB, AM, and CW IF filters. It gave the FT-920 a new lease on life. This video shows the FT-920 knocking out adjacent signals when I press the NAR (Narrow) button, which routes the signal through the 250 Hertz INRAD filter.

Contesting, especially in 40m and 80m, with an FT-920 featuring an INRAD 250Hz CW filter (I use on its INRAD board, cascaded with an original Yaesu 500Hz) is a joyful experience!!!

I had so much fun with my FT-920 that it was difficult to find a transceiver I liked better. The ergonomics of the FT-920 is among the best ever. With the INRAD filters it became a boss on CW. I used the INRAD board to toggle between their 2.1kHz SSB filter and the original SSB filter. Finally, after 20 years, I replaced it with the FTdx5000MP, which it now my favorite radio of all time. 73, de N4HNH

What is the narrowest physical filter you could fit for SSB Doug? Are there any sub-3K options?

John, INRAD makes a 1.8 KHz SSB filter. I bought the 2.1 KHz. I also bought and installed the board that allows me to switch between the original filter and the INRAD. It comes with a switch that mounts to an existing screw on the bottom of the radio. No holes were drilled to install it. 73, de N4HNH

And compared to 5000 and borrowed FTDx10?

No, it doesn’t beat the 5000 or the FTdx10. But it isn’t far behind, at least on CW, when using the 250 Hz INRAD filter. The DSP in the 5000 and the 10 is more advanced for SSB. The DSP in the FT-920 does a great job with CW though. I didn’t even enable the DSP width in the video. I could have narrowed down to around 125Hz with the DSP. I want to install an INRAD 250 Hz filter in the FTdx5000 someday, instead of the stock 300 Hz filter. 73, de N4HNH

Yes. The INRAD filters are a cut above. Back when the FT-920 was made, Yaesu used Collins filters. Maybe that is still the case. I haven’t asked Yaesu lately. I can say that the 300 Hertz CW filter for the FTdx10 is excellent. I’m not sure if it is a Collins. Collins is good, but INRAD is at another level. 73, de N4HNH
