Had the Yeasu FTdx 10 for 10 months now and I have to say this is a heck of a HF rig. the way it can separate to signals close to the other I have never seen or heard before . I had a Icom 7300 and it was not even close to what you get with the FTdx10. I know the ic 7300 is a old hf rig being designed before 2015 so it make sense that the Ftdx10 that's 5 years newer design would outperform it. I'm extremely happy with the FTdx10 and there in no hf rig I can see buying until icom tries to make the next hf rig to compete with the FTdx10. cheers.

I'm still enjoying my IC-756 Pro3, after all these years! I'm not made of money (then or now), so i'm still in awe at how well this rig works with my TA-32 Junior and GAP vertical! But i'm still lusting over the FTDX-10, which I hope to add to the shack one day! I get the impression that it will blow away the Pro3, especially high QRM contest situations.

Nothing wrong with the older rigs. I just ordered a DX10 but still love my Kenwood Ts-980SD.

I'm 6'2'' tall and I've got hands as big as shovels...my solution for pressing the buttons on the DX10 without touching the ring/vfo is to use a HB pencil with a rubber/ eraser on the end, I use the rubber ended pencil to button press like a stylus..far better than struggling with my sausage fingers. Work the problem to find the solution.

Does it use silent pin diode or clack click relay in QSK full breakin cw mode ? Seems great rig for cw with roof filter but how about silent sending ?

I keep a stylus handy for using rigs like IC-7300. Initially did this to prevent the touchscreen getting grubby but then I found it was also good for pushing the buttons. Sometimes wonder if front panels are just getting too small and fiddly. It's probably an age thing .

I've had my FTDX10 for a little over a year now, and absolutely love it. I'm so glad I didn't have a knee jerk reaction on the menu timing and ergonomics. At first, the my fingers would bump the big dial, but now I can push the buttons, even in the dark without worry, but it took a couple months of use to get me there.

To cycle through the band stack registers, you can just push the band button, and then press in on the function button versus touching the screen again. This is easier and less likely to make a mistake.

Thanks! I actually hadn't tried that until you suggested it. Works like a charm. I have however set my rig up it in such a way that I have SSB mode and frequencies on VFO A and CW mode and frequencies on VFO B. Has been helpful to me.

Many thanks for a great video on the FTDX10 transceiver. I have had mine for just over a year now, and can say, they certainly do need a bit of getting used to. Overall, this transceiver has more than met my expectations, it does have a great many features packed into a relatively small radio. Yes, the firmware update from Yaesu did give an extra few seconds for band selection, which was very nice. The problem I used to have was, once I had pressed the band selector switch, and moved my hand across to the screen, the band selection screen would always seem to disappear at the precise moment my finger tip touched the screen, this of course would change my frequency to some other. I do, as do many others, a touch screen stylus for all operations on the FTDX10. I still have my FT991a, it has a few nice features as standard, that much more expensive equipment doesn’t have. It has a carrying handle, and to me, a very important consideration, backlit push buttons. The only other transceiver, other than the FT991a to have this function with my own station are the good old TS 2000X. But, you can’t win ‘em all. 73 all.

TS2000 was (is) awesome, despite the potbelly stove look. Was in production for no less than 18 years, so no doubt a success for Kenwood.

Backlit keys add a lot of covenience and a nice look to tech devices that are often used in low light conditions. I wonder why it is not used more often on these kind of gear. You get backlight with the cheapest Baofeng radios, so it can´t be that much rocket science.

Im new to Ham radio & just passed my Foundation.. This is my first radio had it for only 3 weeks & so far love it to bits. after doing the firmware update you can now add any wireless mouse (unlike before) & that's been a game changer to this radio, how quickly you can scroll through the frequency range with ease is just fantastic & can do most changes without having to ever touch the screen again.. just wish Yaesu would have done right click on the mouse for the function button or even band button.. but hopefully will be in another firmwear update.. great video thanks for the info... 👍

Good summary of the ergonomics. I find myself forgetting that it’s easier to simply tap the frequency on the touch screen and typing in a frequency vs messing with the outer ring.

You'd think that they could change a couple of things in a software update to not make the band display menu disappear so quickly.(the update they came out with didn't seem to change that very much) I would also like more mouse functionality (such as mouse scroll wheel VFO tuning.) However, when it comes to quality, features, and affordability, Yaesu takes the cake! I do agree that it is a radio that grows on you the more you use it.

Thanks. I am going to order this radio today, but I was undecided about the 300 Hz roofing filter which I will now also purchase. I am a little worried about the small, close push buttons, but when I look at RF performance per dollar (USA), this radio seems to excel over all others.

Appreciate this review. I had noticed that some were being returned. I figured it was because of the buttons being too close to the tuning knob. Pretty silly when you can just lock it in place. Its an incredible radio. That receiver is out of this world. Hopefully this is a radio that is well made and will last for a number of years. You did a very nice job with this review. 73. Joe

I think it's a great radio! I've had it about 9 months now and I'm still learning some of the features. I wish Yaesu would make the duration of the menus user configurable, as they do with the splash screen when you power on the rig. As a new user menus disappear much too quickly.

I made a "tune box" which allows me to press a button and allows a predetermined CW output carrier level to be emitted, I use this to do a manual tune as required. I originally used the tune box with the FT991A and modified the unit to work with the FTDX10 happy to email the details if you wish. The ergonomics, yes it takes a little to get used to it but I usually always have a mouse connected and that can make things a lot easier to deal with, if you get an opportunity to to use an FT710 with a mouse you'll find the radio is much more usable with the latest mouse UI enhancements add to the FT710, I am kinda waiting (wishing) for those mouse UI enhancements to be added to the FTDX10

I have mine for almost 2Y. My impression is that some people are more concerned of the outlook of the radio and menus rather than the radio itself. I have my concerns about the ergonomics either, but this will not anyhow influence the decision to have this radio. When I operate, I do not change the band every second to have any trouble with the tight space around the button and as for the mode I don't change the mode at all. Before that I had FTdx-3000, it had much accessible keypad but the radio in FTdx-10 is at another level. 73 de LZ5RG

Great informative video. I heard people complaining about big fingers and the band button but did not understand why. ......and now I know. Band Stacking Registers.....I turned mine off. I got tired of cycling through each register to change modes. I now use the mouse to click on the VFO icon and then use it to change modes. Much faster and easier. I wish you could click on the MHZ numbers to change bands. For sending a carrier I use the mouse to change to the RTTY mode and then key the mic. I have the FT-710 and really like it. I am thinking of getting the 10. The 710 has a funky way of addressing the RIT / XIT. Thanks for posting the very informative video. Barry, KU3X

I've had the 10 since the Hamvention weekend last May. So far I've used it on digital modes and a little CW. I agree with you about the APF peak filter on CW. I don't use any DNR on CW. I have the APF set to narrow. This increases the ringing a little but still usable. Also have the 300 Hz roofing filter but don't always need it. I've never used my 10 on SSB, nor any other radio for several years now. I find DNR helps more on SSB. Also use Win4Yaesu to control the 10 from my PC. It eliminates the need to press the crowded buttons on the front panel. But not everyone is going to like that solution.

I never gave it a second thought about selling - I was aware of the "warts n all" element of the rig. From a receiver perspective it's in a class of it's own and that's from a none Yaesu fan! The only 2 things I don't like is the size (another mans meat is another poison) and the crowded space around the VFO specifically the 'Band' button' comparing the weight with a Kenwood TS570 it is a complete lightweight. DNR and NB are quite superb, filters on CW are just something else and I did not feel the need to buy the additional roofing filter. It's fair to do a comparison with the FT5000. Am I tempted to upgrade NO, my usage does not dictate the need for a second receiver. I have used the new FT101 and I'll stick with the FTdx10 unless I get the opportunity at a very silly price. It really has set the bar quite high. Great and useful vid thanks for the time and effort to post. 73 Mike

Good point. As a relatively new ham, one of the first things I noticed with DNR "levels" was that it's not a linear scale. Each "level" just seemed to provide a different type of reduction to an increasing degree of effect as you went up the scale.

I have equipped several Yaesu transceivers with a TUNE function. Wire up a push button switch with 3' or so of two conductor cable. Connect one wire to TX RQ IN pin and the other to GND pin of the LINEAR jack on the rear of the FTDX10. When you push the button, the transceiver will output 100 watts or whatever level you have the output power set to.
@JR-lx8nn
@JR-lx8nn 11 месяцев назад
Fair enough. The lack of a TUNE button for adjusting a transmatch or linear amplifier is a deal breaker for me, especially on a small radio that could easily go portable. Kenwood does it. TenTec had it. Enough about that. Nice video, well presented with good narration and good illustration on screen. Thank you.

Just noticed your video on here, so a bit late to the party. Part of the For-Sale issue is the lack of a TUNE button. The tune is simple lack of information. The problem is not a problem. Punch the VFO icon, select RTTY and squeeze the mic button. You get what ever power output you have set on the main menu. Best to put the amp to stand-by but whatever floats your boat I guess. There is no involved or sneaky work around, yadda, yadda as I see claimed on the net. Tap VFO, tap RTTY and tune away. 73

With my FTdx3000, I mounted a momentary pushbutton in a small box and connected it to the Tx Req In pin on the rear panel LINEAR plug. In any mode, I can press that button to get a steady carrier and releasing it returns everything to the previous mode/settings. One can select between 10/20/50/100 watts, via Menu #178. I find 10 or 20 watts is more than adequate to dial in my tuner and/or amplifier. I'm sure the very same thing is possible on the FTdx10.

I originally purchased the 991, but I ended up getting the FTDX10, then later the FTM-300 after not hearing any dstar in my area. I had an icom-7100 but after I watched a few Yeasu videos I started to replace my icoms with Yeasu as fusion is more popular than dstar, and I had zero intrest with what I was hearing on my hotspot. I still have my 7100 in a go box, and an icom 4100 as a hot spare that I'll shortly start to do Winlink and APRS igate once I get my cables. Icom is great and I do still like them but it's about what works in my area and the digital modes I want to use.

What works best for me to switch bands, and maybe the design is actually intended that way, is using my right hand, put my fingers around the inner dial, push the band button with my thumb and then turn the dial to select the band. It takes a little getting used to. DNF , or lack thereof, was always my biggest complaint with the IC-7300. On pretty much every Yaesu radio use the RF gain and pull a curtain over the noise, which makes it so nice to listen to, as long as the signal is a little louder than the noise floor.

you cannot compare a radio for expeditions or portable operation with such a monster and a piece of furniture as the 5000, and you also need to remember the price of both devices, when even today the 5000 is sold for the price of two FTDX. Unfortunately, it is true that the ergonomics of the FTDX are tragic, but the receiver is TOP :) It's as if they've forgotten that there are also nations that don't have little fingers, but this has been repeated for the umpteenth time and I doubt that it will ever change with Yaesu, the solution is to control TCVR via mouse on external monitor.

One point that many people miss is that sometimes the price of the dx10 is only 100 more than the 991A - which the dx10 has much more bells and whistles. I know, the dx10 has no V/UHF - but you get over that very quickly.

The same feelings as you, but I choose to keep it by my side. I also have the FTDX-5000MP as you mentioned FTDX-10 performance is quite similar to FTDX-5000MP, YES, it is one of two reasons why I keep it and the rest reason is I can find other brands of radio who can compete. I did plan Kenwood TS-590SG or TS-890, but they are too expensive for collection( yes, just for collection only). Yaesu really did a mistake with the placement of the button, anyway I forgive them already and I plan DIY a smaller "F" button for my bigger/fatty finger.
@hillside49
@hillside49 Год назад
Perhaps installing a smaller diameter function knob, along with gluing an extension to the band button such that it extends out past the outer ring would help those with big fingers. It's too bad that the rig needs this kind of mod in the first place. I'm a "function-before-form" type of guy, and hardly anything suits me that can't be improved with some modification. MY old FT-902DM has a good APF that works wonders with a weak signal.

A year later here. My DX10 remains working like new in spite of being bounced around in the RV for 15,000 miles over the past 3 years. I do agree that the Band button should have been reversed with the CS button as the Band is used constantly and the CS not so much. It may be that a firmware upgrade could do that. I use the DX101MP at times and I never find it to be better than the DX10. The 101 menu system is not logical. The 10 is simple and logical.

I agree as regards the waterfall/scope. I recently traded in my year old Kenwood TS-890S which I loved and went back to a FTDX-101MP but do miss the clarity of the waterfall/scope that the Kenwood had. Without averaging the Yaesu screen looks way too “busy” compared to the TS-890s, Icom IC-7300, IC-7610 etc. Fingers crossed that a firmware update maybe on the horizon if enough of us complain!! Hi. Honestly the band scope is one of the few things keeping me from jumping on a FTDX101D. The lack of averaging options is a pretty big deal to me. Another superficial point that bothers me more than it probably should is the lack of color and appearance customization. ICOM does a fantastic job, allowing you to configure the scope with the colors, style and averaging level you prefer. They come as close as anyone to what you get from the premier SDRs from Flex and Apache Labs. Lastly, I think the 3D waterfall is stupid. There, I said it.

On the fence weither to buy the FTdx10 or go back to the 710 which I tried out for a month. I liked the 710 but I know the filters are much better on the 10 along with easier to access-friendlier functions. I also learned that using a HDMI converter for DVI for external causes a fuse/circuit to blow requiring service to the unit to have it repaired... the 710 has a self resetting one. One of my biggest dislikes on the 710 was having to go into the menu to change contour, notch etc.. and have just a couple seconds before it kicked you back out only having to start over again. Adjusting the DNR ..same issue. I really want to like the 991A, but everyone has told me that it just can't stand up against the 10. I do like how the 991 is layed out. I have also been told that the 10 is to big to use portable.. but a couple inches and 3 pounds difference, is that really a big deal?

Dockers is a great brand of pants but if you don't get the right size they are useless. Fit is one of the most important features in a radio that is never talked about. Go to a brick and mortar or a hamfest and spin the dial on several models and see what fits your needs.

Another way to tune is simply push the function button and turn the keyer off. Then your straight key or paddle will simply work like a normal straight key. I generally either do that or throw the rig into am and key up. Sold my 7610 and replaced it with the ftdx 10. Much better rig

I think you will be in the minority with your personal comment, but if that is your personal view so be it. The rest if the HAM world think this is an excellent radio. Agreed there are some items that could have been better executed in the design. But on balance it’s a real upgrade from those radios of 20 years ago. Enjoy your radio which ever rig and mode of operation. Best regards Steve

As soon as I saw the front panel I knew where the issue was likely to be! My absolute pet hate is a cluster of buttons around a vfo knob. Apart from bumping the vfo during operation, I can see that issue being irritating. PLUS being right handed the band button is on the wrong side. I can understand why they're unpopular. I wonder, Are there programmable function buttons on the mic that can serve as the function button? I built a mic for my Kenwoods that has 6 programmable buttons. VERY useful. 73 de GØUSL

I never touch the screen so I use a stylus or a mouse. If I click buttons I usually use the back end of the stylus. My complain it that we can use a mouse but there is no way to open the band select or the menu using a mouse. It would be easy for them to update firmware to give you a menu with a right click with a mouse for band and menu. Or even a touch icon to click on screen.

Thanks, I ordered one of these yesterday. If you want to tune without changing your CW to straight key (I use straight key mode due to using a Bug) change your mode to RTTY and tune by hitting PTT on your mic. 73 de AI5DD

A friend locally was on the verge of sending his back the very first day he had it due to the excessively fast BAND menu, I did the firmware update for him which helped. He has lent me the radio for a few months to try, unlike him I am happy to use CAT control a lot. It is a great performing radio, but I am not yet used to the ergonomics. It has made me want an FTDX101 however! Update: Despite some issues I did subsequently buy an FTDX101MP, most of the time I navigate the menus with a USB mouse.

Yes perhaps Yaesu might in their next FW update create a link to the band screen by touching the frequency on the display just like an ic7300. It can be done because they already have it activated for the mode button on the ftdx10. Yaesu....I hope you are listening please..

The other reason people have been returning them is they are plugging in the wrong monitor for seeing a larger display and burning out a board in the radio.

Great insight. From purely a function/menu/display perspective do you have experience with the IC-7300 to compare the FT-DX10 to? I have a FT-818ND for manpack/POTA/SOTA style but im now shopping for a shack rig that could double duty in car-based/front range style POTA/mobile. Thank you in advance.

Hi LB3SA, thanks for your valuable observations ! What makes me happy is to know that the YAESU staff pays always high attention, so hopefully in the next rig that little, but annoying flaw will be resolved ! Possibly by means of an ergonomic remote command unit ??!! 73 to all Hams ...

it is a pity they didn‘t put band and mode one level up to where qmb and split(i guess?) is. for tuning: i set CS to power, so i now can press cs and use the outer dial to set power quickly to 12-15watts and then I just whistle into the mic so i don‘t need to change mode from ssb away.

😂😂😂exactly for this Reason i bought the FTDX101. I have fat Fingers... But I´m sure the FTDX10 is a exellent Radio. How to Tune you can try this, Go to CW Mode, turn "BK in " on and then push the Mox Button. At the 101 it works, so i think it would work with the 10 too, because the Radions are very similar. in the Software. 73´s DB4WD Guido

I got the DX10 after a few hrs of using I just found too meny flaws . I dont have a big hands but every time i need to used a fuction on those more than 10 buttons located around vfo I end up in a diferent frecuency . That is bad enought not to buy the DX10 but you will find other serious issues some of them shared by the of latest Dx line including the Dx 101 . pan adpater osciloscope are a joke useless . There not used and you have to ajuste it level etc.Gosh it is a waste. Selecting a mode is a race to be the screen timer but if you are asking for a function located on the right side of VFO you are going to get frustated trying to beat the short 3 seconds to change or selet a mode . Now when come to weak signal DNR on NB you are not going to like any of the 3 audio situations to adjust a fuction the race is on . The DNR just dont work right . Here is what you are going t o face 1" gloglo"audio you will have hard time to understand even under 5 level of DNR 2 -noise vs oudio , if you have a decent signal but noise is high using the DNR Leadsl to a robotic audio or not using the DNR and deal with the white noise. 3 - on weak signal the dame DNR induce a vitual QSB defeting the whole purpose to use The DNR .you are in not win situation. CW is not bad because you handking a single tone. I RETURES THE POS dx10 for something better like 7610 . I Rest my case I DONT ane a raduo full of menu to operate ans it have to come with pencil to operate . You waste more time dealing with menu after menu and flaws than enjoying a QSO Olny the 101 is nice and simple to operate , osciloscope are a joke also.

I’ve ran mine for a year now. Mainly all Cw. One of the best Cw rigs available for certain. One of the biggest draw backs of the dx10 is the scope averaging. It has a fiddly scope. You really have to play with the levels to find out how it works. I use 2d fall. Hated the 3D. No tune button sadly. I wish they would’ve put this radio inside of the 3000 so we’d have more finger room. For the money at the time it’s the best Cw rig I could find. What amp do you run with your 10? I’ve been using the als600 but looking for a bigger amp.

Q: could this radio be set up with 1.830cw in memory ch1 1.920ssb in memory ch2 1.960 rtty in memory ch3 (for your tune ) 3.560 cw in memory ch 4 .....a ... 28.060cw .......... ch 30 28.500 usb .......ch 31 And so on and so on then just tune from the desired memory ch just like a band stack rather than vfo a/b This is how I use my icom ic 7300 it is much better for easy of use ? So I am always on memory mode and just turn the multi wheel as a band/ mode running up and down to desired band and mode ,then adjust the vfo to desired frequency. I find this works great . Would this work on the ftdx10 ? I know it did not work very well on my ftdx 3000 which was very frustrating. Any thoughts /advice. Thanks MM0UDI.

I have big fingers and shaky hands. To cycle through the band stack registers of the band you are currently on, simply press the Band button twice, bip-bip, to move on to the next item in the stack. You can cycle through the stack that way, faster than you can touch the screen or rotate the function button and you do not have to lift your finger away and jostle the other controls. I frequently lock the frequency with a 'bip' on the hand mic (held in my other hand) so that my stumbling fingers don't move the VFO dial or ring while I am flipping through the band stack, then unlock it when I am done flipping stacks. Lotsa' ways to skin the cat on this rig.

The DELIBERATLY MISSING spectrum display "averaging function" is a real disappointment. Other pricier Yaesu's have it. Also the usb wireless mouse incompatibilities issue is beyond belief. I suspect this radio was never intended to "point & click" the spectrum to change frequencies - only push buttons in the setup menus.

Excellent++ video! You seem like an authentic LA but you sound almost like an American? ;-) Meant as a compliment. I am a CW guy and if those RF insides were in an IC7300 - magic. But I have long Nordic fingers too and no way I can master those buttons, besides I dislike touching screens. Maybe FTdx10 housed in an FT2K or FT3K would be optimal. Yet I fear we are in the time of the silicon sliver iPad devices. If I ever see a mechanical S-meter again on a new radio it will be a Shock! de Wb8yqj diDit
