My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
This is the ninth video in a series of videos I will be producing to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. This video features the Yaesu FTdx10 transceiver’s Notch and Contour filters.

I'm liking the contour filter a lot. It really seems to help kill the noise. Good stuff.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
It’s another great tool in the toolbox. It is basically a parametric EQ acting as a wider form of a notch filter. You do have the option to set the Contour filter to boost instead, but I find it works best using the default parameters, cutting the noise around 1800 to 2200 Hertz. 73, de N4HNH

N4HNH. I enjoy your videos. Does the FTDX10 have a feature that turns down the receive volume automatically? The application would be, listening to a weak station calling CQ with DNR on, and the volume almost up to the maximum, and suddenly a strong station comes in while I'm using headphones and makes my ears ring.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 2 года назад
No, it doesn’t. I can’t think of any transceiver that has that feature. The closest thing to that is the AGC (Automatic Gain Control). There are 3 attack speeds and you can go into the menu and adjust each speed to your preference. 73, de N4HNH

Thank you. Good information. Can you find a method to illuminate the controls around the dial? It is very difficult to see which buttons & knobs you are pushing or turning.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio Год назад
I usually say what buttons I’m pressing or which knobs I’m turning. This video was long ago so I don’t remember. The buttons aren’t backlit. Oh, it looks like I was adjusting Notch and Contour. Your manual will show where they are. They share the same shaft at the lower right. If I turn on too much light the display gets washed out. Sorry. Can’t do all. My videos don’t replace reading the manual. My videos are intended to take you beyond what the manual teaches.

That’s a good way to learn. But yes, my videos teach technique. They assume familiarity with the radio already. In fact, the vast majority of the techniques I teach can be applied to just about any radio. It’s just that some don’t execute as well as others and some don’t have such features as Contour or APF. 73, de N4HNH

I have been successful in quieting static (lightning) crashes using both the notch and contour, placing them almost on top of one another (generally into the right hand 1/3 of the filter width), upping the attenuation and setting agc to slow. When the static crash occurs it is greatly muted and does not effect the audio quality that much. Don't know if I'm doing it right or not. Too little experience.
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 3 года назад
That’s a reasonable approach, John! For static crashes, I also enable some attenuation and IPO, if the station I’m listening to is strong. 73, de N4HNH

Any thoughts on the Contour "Cut vs. Boost" debate? I normally default to Cut, however I've seen some rare instances where Boost really helps. For instance with the CQ contest going on now. There is a weak SSB station from Finland buried in noise and sandwiched between combatants on either side. I know this because of the DX Cluster. So, the only way I could dig him out was to narrow my width to 1500Hz to minimize the QRM on either side of him, then I had to shift him 40Hz. I added the Notch (narrow) at 1800Hz, and then finally, I added a Contour Boost at 2200Hz (I set the boost to +15), and it pulled him out. I had already set my ATT to 6dB with IPO on, and my RF Gain about 3/8 turn. (if you're possibly seeing this right now, he's on 14.329.80, OH0V). Just curious if you ever use Contour that way (I know you favor reducing all the noise).
@n4hnhradio
@n4hnhradio 3 года назад
Cut. Boost brings in more noise. I don’t like noise. The default settings by Yaesu are good. Just sweep Contour until you can pull the weak station out of the noise. 73, de N4HNH

I also often run contour boost, usually in the 1800 to 2200 hz range. I use ATT, IPO, DNR, and shift/width to address the noise issues.

@@KK4DF when i had my FT-891, it seemed like 1900Hz contour boost was the magic spot. with the FTDX10, I can't say I use boost ALL the time, but when I've tried everything else, that's something I try. 73 de KD2TJU

Doug this is a great idea for another video. Seeing a SOTA spot or DX cluster spot, going to the freq and not being able to hear them at all, then showing how they can be pulled out. You do it a lot with ghost signals, just thought showing that folks might see a spot, tune to it and assume they don't have propagation and move on. Not so fast, you may be able to pull them out. Not only that, the SITA guys are mostly QRP, so there's a great chance of working them and them hearing you just fine. With sunspot cycle 25 getting better and rare dx spots hitting the boards. Folks can sharpen their skills for bagging these. That brings up split and quick split if you wanted to fit that in a video. Thanks Doug!

My FTDX10 arrived today and the notch and contour knobs don't even work, if I press the notch and contour button you can see the notch and contour graphic, but you cant move the filters with the knobs, looks like it may be going back....

Are you using the bottom right controller, Ring for Contour and the Knob for Notch.... also are the Indicator lights lit orange You know you can just turn the respective Ring or Knob and they will activate and Light up the indicator indicating they are active... if so you might have a duff set.

@@n4hnhradio Hi, just a follow up, I spoke with the retailers workshop and they confirmed that the radio was faulty, I had to wait the full two weeks before they would refund me, mmmmmm. anyway I now have my refund, and just to go over what I said in my other post on your other video, I know the FTDX10 is rated on the Sherwood reports, but I really didn't see a significant difference compared to the 991, the 10 is nicer looking and the band scope is nice, but me personally I didn't rate it, If anyone out there is trading a FT991 for a FTDX10, have both before you let the 991 go.
