These are my initial thoughts and observations about the VX-6R. I also run through the included accessories as well as some other items such as the Yeasu Clip-14.
Thanks excellent video and excellent information on the new radio. At some point in the future will be my new go to most likely. Very helpful video, better than most open the box type reviews. Thanks!
Thanks for posting this, I've been looking at several Yaesu's and haven't decided yet. More and more I've been leaning towards the VX-6R and finally made up my mind. Once again, excellent review.
Thanks for the great review. I really appreciate how u walk us through all the accessories and don’t dwell on the radio too much. As I’m fairly new to Ham radio... I was unaware of there being a store in Atlanta. I’m in Bham, Alabama and works out nicely. Thanks again!😁👍👍
Just thought I would pass along something I learned recently about the VX-6R HT... While watching RadioPrepper, he mentioned that he had just gotten the radio ( although I think it's the European version ) and that when he removed a jumper under the battery compartment panel, he was able to transmit on 6 meters... I recently purchased a VX-7R antenna, which has two sections, and together it will work for the 6 meter band. Since I had the radio unlocked from Gigapart when I purchased it , it will now also transmit on the 6 meter band as well as those slightly outside of the amateur bands in case of emergencies... Although it might only be transmitting at 1 watt, and I haven't determined how well the transmission might be It still seems like the small investment was worth it for the additional capabilities...
Thank you for the tip on the belt clip. I just got one for my VX-6R today, and I had no idea how to unclip it from the radio after I had clipped it on.
John Nesbitt You’re welcome! That’s mainly the reason why I started making these kinds of videos. I wish I would have read up a little more about it but I was surprised too. When putting in freshly charged AAs I noticed it read a lower voltage so I looked into it and read that info somewhere. Thanks for the comment! It’s encouraging to see this channel actually helping other hams. Thanks for watching!
Hey buddy I really like your video on the vx6r I have the same radio you're absolutely right it's rugged I have mine for about a year-and-a-half it still looks brand new I keep it in the case and I get to waterproof mic for it and all the accessories to go with it it's a great price point for with the radio does thanks for sharing this video really appreciate it goodbye from Atlanta Georgia
Great video. I love my VX6R. I have had mine almost a year now. I got the mod when I bought mine at HRO. The only thing I did different was buy a Super Elastic Signalstick Antenna. I frequent the backcountry and it works better for me. Kn6mat
hotfootedhiker Thank you! Yeah, I also ended up buying a super elastic for mine. I have used it extensively now and I’m going to do a review soon. Thanks for watching!
I went with VX-7. Hard to get now. More info on the screen, 4 bands. However 2 bands not very usable, 6m band need much bigger antenna to be effective, 220mhz is a bit rare. It can transmit on very wide range. What i dont like about vx 6 and 7 is a AA battery pack. The battery need to be fitted with a hummer, and taken out by screwdriver, provide tiny power with only 2xAA. Seruously? Both batteries are fixed by tiny plastic clip that feels very weak. All the rest are great radios.
How easy was this radio to set up and figure out? Im studying for my license, and have not purchased a radio but i have loke a top 5 and this is one of them?
I noticed you added a new antenna to your radio... just wondered if you had a chance to use and antenna analyzer to see just how much difference there is between the original and the after market...? I haven't tried an after market on my radio, but have tried several on others and found them to be less advantageous than the stock ( which is better across the freq's I use )
I talk about that in my one year review: Yaesu VX-6R: ONE YEAR REVIEW (Super-Elastic Signal Stick + Yaesu Accessories) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TWj3qhLFvYA.html
It's a nice radio. But the battery life is quite short. The ability to listen to SW is nice but it could use a secondary jack for that. Also the "pre-programming" of SW stations is a waste of memory in that the majority of the pre programmed stations aren't transmitting to North America anymore/are not broadcasting at all. The belt clip is totally useless. Yaesu could have done it a little better with this
I never even tried to manually program my VX-6R, which I've only had 3 weeks. I got programming software for it and once you take 5 minutes to figure out the software, you can literally program like dozens of channels in a few minutes. I got the Diamond triband SRH320A antenna instead of the dual band like this guy got. How ya gonna do 220 with a dual bander? The VX-6R can do 220, not just 2M and 440. This radio can be mars modded by anyone that can take a soldering gun with some de-solder wick and takes about 4 minutes to do. Don't need a professional to MARS mod this one.
@@lytcomm88 Well I would have gigaparts do it. Not sure how easy it would be to get the additional frequencies with the stock antenna, or if I would need specific antennas or gear to use them.
@@anonymous_friend not sure. I know the RU-vid channel “Radio Prepper” does that mod himself. He may go into what is needed to operate on those frequencies. Might what to check it out.
