excuse me but have any of u ever attended a seminar run by or trained with sensei tanaka? hes literally the happiest man in the world! even tho he doesnt always smile u can sense how happy he is an proud. however u can see once he puts on his gye...hes not the type of person to be disrespectful to...last summer camp tanaka sang a song to his wife at the banquet in front of like 200 black belts...im sure that tells u something about him.
Bouncing does not necessarily increase starting speed. And I seriously doubt anyone is "twice as fast" as Mikio Yahara. Also, tournament karate for points is altogether different from "keep yourself alive" karate. Scoring a point is one thing, taking out multiple attackers with basically one technique per attacker (which Yahara has done as professional provider of security against Japan's Yakuza) is something else again. Strong technique needs a strong platform.
Now I haven't been doing karate from the 60's. I wasn't even born then. I have done competition for more than 10 years however and have experimented with bouncing and without. For me there is deffinately an increase of starting speed. I also don't see it as waste of energy since karate matches don't take longer than a couple minutes. It is true that bouncing makes you weaker to a sweep, you are lighter on your feet, which is why you need to change your rhytm. Something many don't.

It's also ruining karate as a martial art, because martial arts are about fighting. We're going to wind up like post-Olympic TKD if this continues. The best solution, to keep things real but also keep it accessible to most people, is to add the SuperSafe helmets the Koshiki Karate organization uses. Then you can hit full contact with no injuries.
This movie shows exactly why competitors bounce now. These guys were the top fighters of their time. Now compare them to someone like Biamonti. He is about twice as fast as them. And that is because modern karate is a lot faster then this karate. Because of bouncing, which also makes it harder for your opponent to read your techniques.
