Yale Graduates Stage Pro-Palestinian Walkout From Commencement | Dawn News English

Scores of graduating students staged a walkout from Yale University’s commencement exercises on Monday, protesting the Israeli offensive in Gaza, Yale’s financial ties to weapons makers and its response to pro-Palestinian demonstrations on the Ivy League campus.
The walkout began as Yale President Peter Salovey started to announce the traditional college-by-college presentation of candidates for degrees on the grounds of Yale’s Old Campus, filled with thousands of graduates in their caps and gowns.
At least 150 students seated near the front of the audience stood up together, turned their backs to the stage and paraded out of the ceremony through Phelps Gate, retracing their steps during the processional into the yard.
Many of the protesters carried small banners with such slogans as “Books not bombs” and “Divest from war.” Some wore red-colored latex gloves symbolizing bloodied hands.

Those classmates are neither 'asleep' nor 'awake'. Apparent is their conscience gravely disturbed because of their involuntary complicity in the mass extermination of women, children, & other non-combatants. Truth be told, it would have been momentous for throngs of classmates to have been likewise 'woke': outraged and have tried to save/protect Jews from the Nazis & other Europeans in WW2 instead of having been either too chicken or too selfish to have been bothered. As it was, the Jews in WW2 were carried off to quarantine camps concluding that other humans didn't want their good times & celebrations ruined by concern for Jews & their kids who were being rounded up for batch exterminations. These types you now despise are not the type to look away if you urgently needed rescue; some of them would even risk themselves for you.

@@s-code-b Except most of the students did not care for it at all. Your essay doesn't change anything, just as their inane protest doesn't change anything. You can accept that this war isn't genocide, but a retaliation, or you don't. It doesn't change anything either way.

@@djroguefireify In so much as the rule-of-force is not concerned with moral imperatives, you are right; because then the only effective 'right' is the force that overcomes others. That is, 'right' is whoever wins the physical contest. The losing party might not be 'wrong' but nevertheless becomes effectively irrelevant.

@@djroguefireify As for most of the graduating students not caring about 'wars' or 'genocides' in faraway places, I really don't know the proportions of those who care or not. But those are types (with varying degrees): types who empathize & conversely types who couldn't care less. It is the type who couldn't care less who were nonchalant while Jewish kids were being rounded up for extermination by the Nazis. It is the exceptional few who were the type to empathize, at risk to themselves, and saved & protected as many Jews -though few- as they could.
