Another operating costs associate with self-check is the cost from theft. i don't think it hinders the whole operation impractical but can be quite substantial
The candidate should assume the net cash flow is stable, and apply the formula that payback period= investment/ annual cash flow. And then we should breakdown the factors.
I think that in the beginning would be great if he asked about what products are sold and where the business units are located, I consider that this things would changing totaly the case. In my opininion without these informations and another ones is very dificult to be specific and insghtfull.
Hi Elaine, While considering the benefits of implementation of the self checkout, one thing that could have been considered was the benefits in terms of shop space that you would get thanks to lesser queues in the self checkout lanes ... this can be assessed as potential revenue (more shop space meaning more product meaning more revenue)... How do the self check out machines know when items have not been scanned or not placed in a bag after scanning? It gives you a warning. Is there a laser scanner or does it detect with the weight difference from the shelve where you place the products before scanning and after scanning?

Thanks for sharing the video! A couple of things the candidate can improve. First of all, the passion, doesn’t seem that this candidate is curious enough and enthusiastic about doing consulting. Secondly, the initial structure is not very organised when I just listen to it. He can number each branch or bucket. Thirdly, the candidate should walk through the calculation with and put the initial formulation upfront to the interviewer.
I was thinking that the number employees after implementing the self check out would be 4 per shift and not 7. I was assuming the remaining 4 employees would man the machines and they wont need to hire additional staff. Is my train of thought wrong?
3 to man the 12 check out machines. 4 employees will still be cashiers. total of 16 check out lanes (12 check out machines and 4 cashier-manned machines)
Because although there's a 75% reduction in checkouts, there is not a 75% reduction in employees. If you did the above you wouldn't have found out this info
