This video shows collecting of a large yamadori Fagus sylvatica called Ent with a help of my fiend. The property is being cleaned on the landlord's request so all the little trees, and stumps have to go. All in all, great potential for future bonsai.

As this tree was growing from the roots of a big tree, there were some seriously big cuts done to it. It was left with a small amount of feeder roots. Not a typical situation to collect, and very hard situation to recover, especially for fagus which is very sensitive species. There is an update video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O-qMQyJz864.html where you can see it grew some leaves but it had no roots to support them. Unfortunately this is the reason why it didn't survive, sorry.

@@andersnrregren9087 I hope he posts a follow video up to show the progress. I'd give it two thumbs up for survival. Many species of trees will, actually, regrow from something as simple as a piece of root or twig cuttings that were just stuck into a conatiner of potting soil. When you have some spare time, 'Google' yamadori bonsai and be prepared to be amazed at the before and after bonsai. Cheers...

Hi! Congratulations for the wonderful Fagus specimen. My experience with Yamadori practices, with rather old beech trees, has unfortunately so far only resulted in failure. Is it, perhaps, due to the fact that I've kept the original clod of earth, in an attempt to save and preserve both the roots and the soil? I wanted to ask you which month of the year you extracted the plant from the soil ina and whether or not it ended up surviving. Do you have any other advice to give? Thanks a lot in advance. Cheers! Rossano

Hello, we have collected numerous yamadori trees last spring, this fagus was the only one which didn't survive, we extracted it in the early spring. I think the reason it failed is that it was actually growing from the root of a bigger tree, so we had to make large root cuts and there were only few fiber roots. I think you didn't make the mistake if you didn't remove the original soil. My advice would definitely be to put the yamadori inside the plastic bag with high humidity level until it fully recovers. Tony Tickle made a video where he explains the plastic bag trick for yamadori. I believe that fagus can be collected if that method is used. Good luck with digging, and thanks for watching Rossano :)

Is this a way? To wash all the soil off straight after collecting? You made it hard for a tree to survive I think. Good luck.
@lovelygreenbonsai
@lovelygreenbonsai 4 года назад
That's how it's done, you remove all the muddy soil and put free draining mix, it makes the best possible environment for the tree in a pot. Thank you, :)

@@lovelygreenbonsai I collected the most beautiful powerful beech a while back after around 4 years of practicing bonsai. Sadly it followed the same path this one has. Since then I've learnt the best way to collect beech is via air layering. I know a number of guys here in England with incredible beech from the process. Yes the base looks odd for some time but once the canopy develops the nebari is mature enough to match.

Does anyone have any advice for cleaning found material? I found this cool rooted deadwood monstrosity . It is covered with crevasses with spider webs and what not. I have potted it and sprayed it with insecticide soap. If it roots I will eventually try doing the lime sulfur thing (first time). To restate: how do I debugg some intricate deadwood ? Thanks to anyone with advice.
@devinm.2398
@devinm.2398 4 года назад
Adam Bomb well the deadwood is probably fragile, so don’t be hard on it. You could maybe try a wire brush on it and see what happens. If there are crevasses on the deadwood, please specify them.

When is the ideal season to collect ?
@lovelygreenbonsai
@lovelygreenbonsai 4 года назад
The best time to do it is in spring before the tree starts to grow. But it can also be done anytime in dormant period when the leaves are off (from autumn to spring).
@delatroy
@delatroy 4 года назад
Lovely Green Bonsai thank you. I guess it’s easier to see the trees too when they have lost their leaves. If you take one, do you take it right away or cut the leader and come back one year later? I heard if you cut the leader, the tree will put energy into root growth so chances of survival when you recover it are higher ?
@lovelygreenbonsai
@lovelygreenbonsai 4 года назад
I take the tree right away, unless I specificaly want to grow the leader in the ground which is much faster than in a pot. I'm not sure if cutting the leader helps with root growing and increasing the chances of survival, I think the best thing to after collection is to put a tree in a humid environment (greenhouse or in a plastic bag) without direct sunlight, Harry Haringhton made a video about it. Hope this helps and good luck 😁
@delatroy

@@lovelygreenbonsai interesting. I read a bonsai book yesterday and it too mentioned two things: 1. you should collect in spring just before budding and 2. that you should excavate around the tree, cut back some roots and then come back 1-2 years later when the tree has redeveloped fresh roots giving it a stronger chance to survive.
@lovelygreenbonsai
@lovelygreenbonsai 4 года назад
I have heard of this tehnique but I have never tried it, it could be useful in some cases if you are making drastic cuts on the big surface roots, but in most cases it's not nessesary in my opinion.
