In this video Greg Owen talks about his custom built, street legal, Yamaha 650 flat tracker motorcycle. He first walks through the original features of the Yamaha flat tracker including a nickel plated Redline frame and modified motor housing. And then, as his racing days are now behind him, he walks through and shows how he modified the flat track racing bike by adding front brakes, front and rear lighting including a brake light, muffler and other modifications. Then he explains how he first had it approved by the California Highway Patrol and then a license plate was issued by the DMV to make his Yamaha 650 flat tracker street legal.

Thank you for your story. I have a 1980 650 waiting for me to bring it back to life and i'm going to build a street tracker out of it. I like the info on the nickel plating and going to research it some more.. Thanks again Greg!

This is one of the best videos I have seen on this subject. Clearly well educated on the XS650, and delivers a great narrative. I have had many xs650s. 10 years ago I did a total restoration on a 71 xs650. Had collector plates on it, was better than when it rolled off the line. I am currently building a street tracker from my newly aquired '78 XS650. Your beast looks great, and has given me some great motivation. Thanks for the great info!!!

I loved your video on the YAMAHA 650. I have a '78 SX 650 that I converted into a drag racer and raced it for many years. It is a great bike to race and has been very dependable. The pistons run together just like the Triumph, but it has the dual overhead cams that lets the RPM's rev higher than the Triumph, but still has the look. I will post a photo of this bike on Google+, so you can see. Pete

cool cat, owen, i raced tt scrambles with a cr 500. i know rite. well when i gave it up to raise my son dirttracking i street legalized it here in northern lower michigan. what a rush, but hard to mind your p's and q's on a big bore 2 stroke on the hardball. very cool bike you've got there!!!!! i've raced against alot of em and the sound is a def eargasm. cool vid peace brother-moose out

Thanks for the video presentation of your bike, and congrats on being a 1% er lawyer to. Would love to see video footage of the yamahas going past the the rest of the flat tracker field. I assume you are referring to the 750cc class?

Greg-- thank you for the video of your Redline xs650 --- Just purchased my 650 redline --from back east--frame --#092--I-- live in Reno Nv.--the bikes needs a lot of work--I'm looking for the foot peg mount brackets--especially the right side--foot peg--brake peddle location--I'll be using the Gramica /Brimbo system--some of the tabs are missing -- If you have some fotos of a bare frame(close ups)--also some one who is making the exhaust pipes with the expansion chamber's--raw metal (to be painted)---thank you for your time---sincerely-- Lane

Mine would have tore it a new asshole ,frame ,dr 400 swining arm ,flanged s/s teen spoked wheels ,hydraulic clutch ,carb converstion ,deluged frame ,front light bck light ,digital cycle bike speedo,double front disc set up ,frks of Honda xl 250 ,black silver fr eddy spencer paint ,and the best bit , tony halco 840 motor ,total engine rebuild ,oil cooled conversion ,best bike I ever owned ,unfortunatly I lost my right leg knee dwn , and kicking it over was not wrking for me ,my stump was getting the shit kicked out it ,I'd had the electric start blanked off ,even if I had kept it , they weren't RECOMENDED by the man who new xs motors like no one else ,sold it and have regretted it ever since , never mind have an awsome built by me bandit 600 trial bike version ,lol

guys i have found an xs650e 1978 for 1800euros is it worth buying it? it is in running condition i want to use it as a town commuter it looks in good condition for its age
