Thanks! I just repaired mine without installing a spare part! It is possible to open the encoder (pull away the 4 metallic lips and open it). Then clean it inside with contact spray, ear sticks and treat the contacts with fine sandpaper. Works like new and is much easier than soldering..

Hi mopotbo! Eeek that video I did years ago, and it is a bit cringe ;) lol! Anyway, I'm glad you managed to get yours fixed by using contact fluid - great job! Here's to making more AN200 tracks!!

Worked for me. Thank you!

Although you did a good job replacing the encoder, I believe you should have tried to clean it before. The contacts being metallic would probably react positively to a drop of Deoxit D100L. Also, the desoldering pump would help you avoid working on both sides of the board simultaneously and damaging the board's soldering points. I know you did it carefully, but it is always good to show the right way of doing things in tutorials like this. Nice to see the AN200 working again.

Hi Gaita. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment on my video! I did this video nearly 2 years ago :) - wow time flies! So, the encoder had physical damage to the rotor disc - it was correct to replace it (I can't remember or not if I showed it in the video). I actually tried some DeOxit on it some time before I made the video - it made no difference. In regards to my electronics ability - I'm no expert - I also made comment about me being a beginner/newbie :) However, I'll take your advice onboard :)

Thank you for the info on the rotor damage. I bought an AN200 yesterday and this is why I am watching all the videos available on it. Subbed.

Thanks for this dude. Just bought the encoders thanks to this vid and your data sheet link. Really appreciate your help.

Please share where you got the encoder from. Thank you.

Interesting! I just became aware the AN200 exists so I never noticed you did a video on this topic. Found one on eBay, so fingers crossed it's all working. :-)

I sprayed the encoder with contact cleaner, and it worked better for a while.. I am going to have to do this one day, among another problem.. i kicked a box fan, in a rage 16 years ago, and it landed on the AN-200.. i have not been able to use buttons 12-16 for editing since then.. I already filled it up with my own music, so at least i can use it as a synth.. needless to say, it taught me a good lesson, about controlling my emotions... LOL...

Hey Hydraulic Telepath! I have a can of De-Oxit and sprayed the encoder, but it didn't work on mine. I thought I mentioned that in the video, but can't remember now - it was a few years ago :) I once punched a computer and it damaged my hand, and the computer was fine - that'll teach us ;)

Thanks for these videos. I just took my AN200 apart to see if giving the data encoder a Caig De-oxit bath would make it right, but it looks like I may have to replace the part as you did. One thing you really should point out - reinstalling the board with the part is a little tricky since the set of buttons around the encoder all have little tabs that have to get lined-up with their respective holes before you can screw it back to the chassis. Using a small flashlight help me line them up.

Hey Paul :) Thanks, I was hoping it would help someone! I didn't have the problem with the holes lining up - but now you mention it, I guess it could happen! Let me know how the encoder goes!

Replacing a switch is Easy too? In My dx 200 the distortion switch is Not working… any Chance to fix this without soldering?

Did you buy your AN-200 on sale at guitar center... For some reason they were selling them new, for dirt cheap... It was like less than a 1/3rd of original retail price.. thats was the reason i bought it.. I made my first beats on it, so i'm attached to it.. Still find uses for it.. cool machine... I'm curious why the DX200's sell for more these days.. I owned one of those as well, but i did not get the hang of it at the time.. I was new to synthesis.. wish i would have kept it... would of-should of-could of... thanks for the vid !!!

I got mine used from Hooked on Austin. It came with the faulty data encoder - and I got it cheap(ish). Thanks so much for watching!

Good job, but desoldering-pump could avoid to work both sides of the motherboard which is dengerous for other components and not comfortable to You :) I need to do the same for my AN200 and DX200 for sure!

Thank you for the great video! I've had my AN200 basically in storage for years because of this same issue. If anyone has a link to purchase the Data Encoder and Battery, that would be extremely helpful. Thank you again!

Hey Adam, as per the link in the video description - here's where you can find out the part numbers for the various bits you need: ranzee.com/yamaha-an200/ I ordered mine from Yamaha in the USA. There's a datasheet for that encoder on my link - so it probably doesn't have to be a Yamaha part - you could search for alternatives. Regarding the battery - just use any CR2032 3V that fits the specs of VN103500 - i.e. Energizer or Duracel works fine. Good luck!

ranzee yes thanks for the reply. I found the part on Syntaur.com for anyone else who is looking as you were correct that Yamaha no longer seems to have them.
