Yamaha C40 Classical Guitar Review - A Great Beginners Guitar

The Yamaha C40 Classical Guitar is a fantastic Beginners Guitar, for a whole host of reasons. I admit that I was a little bit skeptical because I honestly don't have too much experience when it comes to classical guitars, but those concerns -- in hindsight -- were completely unwarranted. Now the questions is whether or not this is the right instrument for your needs. Therefore, let's do a quick Yamaha C40 review.
As I just mentioned, if you are a guitar beginner, this guitar would be my number one recommendation. And I will explain as to why in a second. However, to be very clear, the Yamaha C40 is not only a great beginners guitar, but also an excellent choice for seasoned players (like myself) who want to explore the field of classical music or who simply like to have an inexpensive acoustic guitar with nylon strings. I've been playing for 25 years already before I bought this guitar and I am more than pleased with my purchase.
Alright, one of the very first questions I get from my guitar students is: what type of guitar do I need to get started? The answer to this can strongly vary depending on whom you ask. But in my personal opinion as a guitar teacher, I always give the following advice: If you're short on money, try to borrow and instrument from a friend or family member, just to get you started. However, if that is not possible or if you already made the decision that you want your own guitar, then I strongly suggest that you get yourself a classical acoustic guitar with nylon strings. Does that mean you can only play classical music? No, of course not -- with that type of instrument you can play any kind of music you like. However, with an instrument such as the Yamaha C40 Classical Guitar, your fingers won't hurt as much as they do when you go with a guitar that has steel strings, such as a Western or Electric Guitar. To be clear, not all guitar teachers agree with me on this point, but that's just my opinion based on what I've seen in my students.
If you are a guitar beginner, I would therefore recommend that you get yourself the Yamaha C40 Classical Guitar Package. That's what I got for myself. The package comes with the instrument and a number of useful accessories, including a guitar tuner, an instructional CD, an extra set of nylon strings and a high quality gig-bag. So considering what you get for your money, this is an excellent deal. Oh, speaking of money, I guess I should also let you know the Yamaha C40 price -- well, I bought my set on amazon and I paid around $150 for the whole package. Hands down, you can't beat that. Here is a link over to my website with more details around buying options:
guitaringenuity...
Since I put the video above on youtube, I got a number questions by folks who have been playing for a while, whether or not this guitar would be a good choice for them. Again, it depends on your situation and what your ultimate goal is. If you are booked to play Carnegie Hall next month, then you are likely looking for an instrument in a different price category. However, if you are a beginner or advanced player who is looking for a decent guitar acoustic guitar with nylon strings at a super low price, well, then the Yamaha C40 is right for you.
Alright, that's it. I hope you found my Yamaha C40 Classical Guitar Review helpful. You can always contact me if you have any questions around this instrument or more general guitar topics.

I bought this guitar in the year 2000, so its been my friend for 19 years already! My mom gave me money for new shoes, but I bought a guitar instead. It has been through several rock festivals and seen the college years, girlfriends, wife and now my daughter. After 19 years and a lot of life later it still plays and keeps tune like a charm! Today was the first time I oiled the fretboard, so it doesn't seem to need a lot of maintenance either. I love my guitar.

I was playing my Taylor on my balcony , and a woman came to me and said she had a guitar for sale for 50$, she brought it i cleaned and put new strings to it, took a little time to settle the strings but no big concern. It is a Yamaha C40 And WOW I was surely impressed I played for 3 hours , great guitar ! Easy to use also Much better than more expensive guitars and fun to play .

This guitar is excellent. The sound improves with age, its cheap, its just brilliant for the price. I have had mine for 7 years and it is lovely. It does get knocks and dents easily but this does not do not any thing to the sound. I love it Note its not good for rock songs or country etc, it has a wide next and spaces between strings, This was made for finger picking in a classical sense. It is great for flamenco as well
@Mulberry-vc6rc

Mulberry 4000 picks should not be used on this guitar your strings will wear out quickly, also the default strings that came with it were terrible i got ad'darrio strings for them. sounds lovely

I agree. Contrary to common belief, even laminate guitars improve with time. Somehow the wood gets drier or lighter. It sounds better. My C40 is only 3 years old but I have a 20 year old laminate steel string guitar which sounds fantastic and the top wood vibrates like a drum.

Yes, I get your point. Not ideal that I used a plectrum, but there are some practical reasons (such as recording volume) for that.

I bought one in OZ in 2016 cause I was travelling and by 3 weeks without a guitar I needed something cheap. It had a better feel to me than the Yami model under it so I took a chance on it. Glad I did.Restring with Dadarios and Its now my daily player and favorite of higher priced guitars I have at home. I keep going in and playing at Guitar Works for something I like better under a grand and cant find it,seriously.(cue the howling "expert affiacinados"). Its travelled to 4 or 5 different Asian countries passed through luggage(never carryon, imaine how they have handled it)on Quantas,AC,Westjet,Korean,Thai,Asiana,LAXall in soft case. Its been dropped,spilled on,pounded with a pick contrary to what some say you cant do on it and sometimes it actually makes me think I can play, lol. It sounds better with age. Look no further.

Actually, it's still available on Amazon, both package and guitar only. The trick to remember is that Yamaha has came out with version 2 of the C40. It's called the C40II. The package deal applies to the C40ii.

Markus, it comes with a gig-bag that's actually pretty decent, but of course it doesn't offer the same protection like a hard-case. But I guess at that price, even if you end up with a couple of scratches and dings it's not the end of the world. The only thing that may be a deal-breaker here is the fact that's classical guitar with nylon strings. A western guitar with steel strings might be better, because it's louder, etc. and therefore more suitable to bring to the beach.

C40 is a very good guitar. I have one which I love playing. One thing I notice with this pack is the tuner. When I bought mine I got Stag tuner, which is not accurate, ie. it is about half tone too high. I hope the Yamaha tuner is a good one. Yours seems to have very bright trebles even with the original set of strings. I have mine for almost 2 years and the neck is still dead straight. I am not a beginner, but I like this guitar because it has nice consistent tones and accurate intonations. It's easy to tune. It's not loud. No you don't have to be a beginner to include this guitar in your collection. I have 4 other guitars, and 3 of them are concert instruments.

The reason the Yamaha C40 has tuning troubles is that it has no truss-rod. Once the guitar`s neck gets to where it needs to be; it will stay in tune pretty good, but it might take a couple days. I`ve had this guitar for about three years; I find it hard to play compared to other classical guitars I have played and I don`t actually like it very much. I would look for a better guitar. Good luck!
@GuitarIngenuity

Surya, there are virtually hundreds of models in that price range that may or may not be consistent with what you're looking for. First question for you: are you looking for a guitar with nylon strings or steel strings? Once we know the answer to that, we can take it from there.

@DaeOh
@DaeOh 3 года назад
I'm trying to figure out if something's wrong with mine. It looks like when you play an E chord your finger is well behind the 2nd fret on the 5th string, but I can't avoid it buzzing without being closer to the fret. My finger on the 4th string doesn't leave room to get that close.
@marketingmajor8126
@marketingmajor8126 3 года назад
Usually that means you are not pressing hard enough of the string with your finger so not enough tension in the string which will cause the string to vibrate against the fret. Some times this is caused when the finger nail on that finger is not cut short enough which will prevent you from putting correct pressure on the string.

action can be adjusted by filing the saddle down. But Yamaha instruments are normally set up not too bad. Action is not so much of a concern for classical guitar due to the lower tension of the strings
@marketingmajor8126
@marketingmajor8126 3 года назад
No the action is already well adjusted but you can adjust it even more if you like but l would not recommend changing the action because it comes very well adjusted already from the factory. What you can do is try different brands of strings and different tensions and find the ones that you like the best.

I've just played a few classical tunes on this model and was impressed and wondering. Do you think the higher end Yamaha models are comparable to other higher end Classical guitars? Like Alhambra or Ramirex..etc... Open question to all. Cheers.
@GuitarIngenuity
@GuitarIngenuity 7 лет назад
I haven't played a higher end Yamaha yet, so I unfortunately cannot make any comparisons. I have a Cordoba and as you would expect, there is a significant difference in tone and play-ability compared to the Yamaha C-40. I realize I just stated the obvious. But my point is, I think the Yamaha C40 is decent beginner's guitar and considering price/quality, it is to this day my recommendation to anyone who wants to start learning guitar or is looking for a good 'entry'--model to the world of classical guitars.
@jonrom100
@jonrom100 7 лет назад
I agree because the fretboard is considered as one of the best, though it gives in to sound. I just figured, if it's so wonderful at this lower end, I can't imagine how great the higher end Yamahas might sound and feel.
@GuitarIngenuity
@GuitarIngenuity 7 лет назад
Yes, your assumption is logically sound. Well, I hope some of the folks who read this have some insights to share around higher end Yamahas!
@jgrossma

Yamaha makes (or at least used to make) concert level classical guitars that cost many thousands of dollars. I've never tried one of those, though I have tried several of the mid-level Yamaha guitars. My general impression is that the entry level Yamahas (such as the C40) have excellent setup and QC really do beat everything in their price class. Apart from cosmetics, what these really lack is volume and tone quality. Mid level Yamahas I've tried have been better, but I don't think they stand out quite so much at their price level. I've been quite impressed with the mid level Alhambras I've tried ($500-800 range). They seem to punch above their price tag in terms of quality.

What about the truss rod. On mine I can't adjust it. Anyone know where it is located on the guitar.
@TheGhostGuitars
@TheGhostGuitars 6 лет назад
Generally classical guitars don't come with truss rods. There's no need for them since classicals don't use high tension metal strings, they generally are nylons only and usually light or low tensions.

Hi, i am learning guitar now less than 6 months and i own a steel string guitar (yamaha f310). But i found out that i really like the sound of the nylon string and i am seriously thinking on buying the c40 but i am afraid that it will hinder my practice and my muscle memory if i practice on both guitars because of the wider neck of the c40. Should i practice more on the c40? What can you advice me about this?
@banacek60chord43
@banacek60chord43 9 лет назад
+humbler711 F310 is a great guitar but for a different style of music and playing. [I use both]. Compare Jose Feliciano with James Taylor. The classic Spanish style, with nylon strings is a good base to learn the roots and basis to progress to your preferred style and less hard on the finger ends! Beginners with steel strings should try ultra light gauge, 0.010" treble E or even less, until the pads develop and the fingers strengthen.

I got a yamaha C-40 but it never came with a tuner....probably cz that was 7 years ago. My problem is, If I cant get a tuner, how can I adjust the tune manually? . whatever I try it still gives me a thick tone that is totally different from what I hear in other C-40 guitars :/ .

You should consider a scale guitar instead, such as a parlor guitar. Martin makes some wonderful parlor guitars in the same price range.

Your professor is correct. Some people do choose to disregard that though and still use a pick on a nylon string guitar. lt is better to learn proper finger technique for playing a classical guitar because they sound so much better when using finger rather than a pick. lt does take some dedication to learn proper classical finger technique but it is worth the effort.

Not very in tune as I can hear... don't know if strings out of tune, or bad intonation of the guitar....
@bobstone6755
@bobstone6755 5 лет назад
He said right in the video that the guitar is brand new and that the strings are not yet broken in. If you've never played on newly installed strings, this is something to keep in mind. Strings need to be played on for a while before they are stretched to their normal length and thus will not hold a proper tuning until they have been stretched to their normal length. This holds true with steel strings as well.

This guitar cost less than USD150. You cannot find guitars with solid wood in this price range. This guitar is for beginners. Getting a more expensive solid top guitar will not help a beginner learn faster but it could make a difference when you are an advanced player.
@banacek60chord43
@banacek60chord43 9 лет назад
Parrot Brand,according to the spec, it's a solid top. I'm trying to find out what NATO is other than a treaties organisation; it seems to refer to ply and solid timber; any info appreciated.
@banacek60chord43

Parrot Brand PS, there are lots of guitars in this price range with solid tops.
@14Fliperis
@14Fliperis 9 лет назад
In the specs, its written "Spruce" and not the "Solid Spruce" :D that's a big difference. In the marketing, if the guitar has solid top, it will always be written in its specs. In this case, it is used to avoid the word "laminate spruce". Guitars body is layered, with small layer of spruce on the top and laminate at the bottom.

Try to look for used classical guitars in local music stores. They'll be your best bet as far as budget goes.
@GuitarIngenuity

To be honest with you, I don't think you can get this guitar (new) for less. There are other, cheaper models, of course. Also, I like Kasey's comment regarding checking your local music stores for sales. Sometimes you can snatch up a decent instrument for dirt cheap.
