Yamaha CS80 - Famous Presets

This classic Synthesizer was in storage for over 3 years, and came back sounding better than ever. Those familiar with the work of Vangelis should recognize these sounds, which are all presets of the Yamaha CS80. The song fragments are played from memory, so please excuse any mistakes!

Never underestimate what a good musician can do with presets. I love creating my own synths, but a good preset is just as valid an instrument as any good violin or guitar.

A german music journalist has mentioned "The influence of the CS80-Sound on Vangelis and vice versa is so strong, that, if you're playing a CS80, it is nearly impossible not to sound like Vangelis." Thanks a lot for this impressive video demonstration. I will add a video answer, soon. At the moment, we only have a little test video. Regards!!

Eddie Jobson's "U.K". album preceded the Vangelis' CS80 recordings by four years. "Alaska" is a classic CS80 sound reproduced on many later synth presets.

I agree. I've had the ME80 a few days now and it comes very close to the original. The envelopes are not quite perfect (I think they use some workarounds to replicate some of the cool things the original does) but it is super expressive and a real inspiration to play and program. I definitely recommending trying out the demo to get a feel for it. I was looking for a CS-80 VST for a while until I stumbled on the ME80..

Random thing (not rying to advertise since it has a free version), but if you are a synthesist such as myself and want a CS80, there's a virtual synth out there called the ME80 which sounds almost exactly like the real deal, and has all the same controls and everything. Very fun instrument.

Brilliant - I enjoyed your demo immensely . I saw Vangelis at UCLA in 1986 and he did't seem to waste a lot of time on the controls - did pretty much like you did. I have the Arturia software version of the CS80 and I was wondering, do you have any idea on how to do the opening bass arpeggio of "Spiral". Thanks in advance.

Nice demo. It is such an expressive synth and will always be indelibly linked with Vangelis like a Moog and Walter Carlos. Vangelis once said in an interview circa 1984 that he thought the DX7 was a step backwards from the CS80 in terms of control. More demos please.
@MacXpert74
@MacXpert74 9 лет назад
Yeah, he was sure right about that! Compared to the awesome CS 80, the DX7 is just a thin sounding piece of sh*t (sorry FM lovers ;) With the current analog revival, Yamaha should really consider creating a new version of the CS80, just like Dave Smith has done with the Prophet 6. But it'll probably be to difficult and expensive, it's a shame!
@voltagecontrolledreality51
@voltagecontrolledreality51 9 лет назад
MacXpert74 If Yamaha did consider a reissue of the CS80 it would probably follow the current trend of a mini key'd version. At least Dave Smith still manufactures Pro keyboards for the Professional and not just pander to a generation that want to twiddle Cutoff and Res knobs. I knew a session player in the eighties who dumped his CS80 in his garden shed when he bought a TX816/KX88 combo. Wonder if it's still there?
@MacXpert74
@MacXpert74 9 лет назад
Voltage Controlled Reality I hope they won't do that! I wouldn't like a mini-key version, and don't think it would make much sense. The CS80 was a real performance keyboard and its sounds probably wouldn't appeal to "Knob twiddlers, as its filter isn't all that strong sounding (when it comes to resonance). A reissue should at least be a 48 key full-size keyboard, although I rather have a 61 key version. About that session player; I guess everybody can sometimes have a leap of insanity ;)
@voltagecontrolledreality51
@voltagecontrolledreality51 9 лет назад
MacXpert74 I can't imagine they could ever re-engineer a CS80. However, I have seen some recent prototype photos floating about of a new Yamaha FM synth. Personally, I've never been interested in FM and blew an opportunity to buy a DX1 a number of years ago. I should have bought it as it is a really lovely Pro instrument. A sad regret.
@MacXpert74
@MacXpert74 9 лет назад
Voltage Controlled Reality Yeah, It's more likely that they would introduce a new FM synth than a new analog monster ;) But i'll pass on that one. I never liked FM either. It sounds to thin and sterile to me. And programming them has always been a nightmare. The DX1 looks nice, and probably has a nice keyboard action (I've never played one, so I can't really say) But at the end of the day it still is just two DX7 in one box. No need for regret ;)

It's common on most classic analog synthesizer, not just the CS-80. After turning them on, for the first 20 minutes or so, as it warms up, the resistors/transistors will slightly change in value, which results in a slightly changing pitch from the oscillators (VCO). This changed when digital control was added to control the pitch of the oscillators. (DCO). Those always stay in tune, but lack some of the sound character of the older VCO synths.
