Yamaha DM3 | Why I got one (for Cubase, and more)

I got a Yamaha DM3 setup as a digital mixer AND as a DAW controller for Cubase. It's been tailored especially for that, and by setting it up as a Mackie HUI inside Cubase I now have control over transport functionality, from the mixer itself. It has dedicated buttons for that. All track names are also coming up on the channel strip on the mixer.
This way I can use it in the studio on my Macbook Air when I work in Cubase 11 as well as for my live sets where I also input a lot of hardware gear in addition to the digital channels coming from the DAW, over USB.
By using the Mackie HUI protocol on Midi channel #2 you can use the DM3 in other DAWs as well and I've successfully used Reaper with transport controls. I didn't get the full set of track names or time code over though. Cubase/Nuendo is by far the best option for this mixer being used as a DAW controller.
I paid top dollar for my unit. This is not a sponsored video.
The song used in the video is "Those Days" from my 2017 album of the same name.

I'm still in love with the old 8-bus series from Mackie, but this is SOMETHING.

Thank you for down to the point walkthrough. No words wasted, very helpful, so well done I almost memorize everything first time watching. This mixer is a reason why went on journey learning Cubase from Logic. Very well done!

Finally someone in a studio situation who bought one of these. Thanks for the review Espen!! I would like to see latency times at 48K and at 96K. USB can be hit or miss sometimes with latency even on a Mac using the core audio driver. For the past 7 to 8 years I have been using a rack with Thunderbolt interfaces and Apple's Mainstage as a digital mixer when I first started I needed an iMac Pro to run a 96K mix with 24 to 32 channels live but now I do all of that from an M1 Max Macbook Pro. But I still take a digital mixer as a backup (even though I have never had to use it thankfully no crashes...fingers crossed) But the DM3 looks to be the perfect size for a small gig and stuff having all the functions needed for smaller shows! Cheers!!

Ya USB can be a hit or miss, but that is usually because of poorly optimized Drivers latency wise. If you buy a quality Interface .. like Esben says .. "if Price is irrelevant .. 😁" USB2 5mbit have theretically bandwith enough for at least 24 concurrent 48k 32 bit streams + some overhead. Most sound interfaces, even with USB-C connection is technically USB2 interfaces. I have a Behringer ADA8200 connected via ADAT so the USB2 interface should be enough as I can unly run it 2way in 48k anyway and 96K is really overkill as long as you don't super expensive hardware all the way in your system anyway. so I If you want 96K and 32 channels you will need a real USB 3 gen1 or 2 interface or multiple interfaces. I tried connecting my Yamaha Genos 2 via the USB connection, and that is just 2 ch 44khz 16bit connection and Cubase showed much worse latency than my Presonus 1824c interface. Even my Soundblaster card in the PC have more than half the latency than the Yamaha driver, which is kinda letdown for an expensive keyboard.

96K is of no interest to me, but I get 3ms of latency @48K just running it as a DAW controller. Buffers at the lowest. My only wish is that it would run @44.1K, as this is what I prefer by far.
@mrdali67

@@EspenKraft Thats not bad. Sounds like the usb sound in/out latency in the keyboards is just lower quality in some cases. Or the driver is actually optimized to the different devices it detects. It's the exact same driver version for both the DM3 and the different keyboards that have usb sound interface. I could set the buffersize for the keyboard, but its fixed at 44.1khz 16bit. Would have liked if it at least supported 24bit if you should create a slight overdriven digital out.

@@EspenKraft I completely understand we use 96K simply for the lowest latency possible since we use wireless in ear monitors as well which will add some latency as well around 4 to 4.5 milliseconds depending on the distance to the receiver. If the latency gets too high with IEMs phase becomes an issue with singing. You'll begin to sing and the only thing you'll feel is the vibration of your skull's bone conduction and the vocal coming back into the IEM will be polarity inverted from the vibration in your skull making it super faint. So that is why we use the higher sampling rates to be honest to keep latency as low as possible. But currently we get about 2.6 milliseconds with a 256 buffer at 96K using Apple's Mainstage and MOTU thunderbolt interfaces since those are modular. But I thinkI'll check out the DM3 if its 3 milliseconds then at 96K that should nearly halve to about 2 or so with a small safety buffer. Cheers!!!

I get you. For such use the higher bandwidth is of course better and necessary. It's also why I refuse to wear any sort of wireless in-ear on stage. Cable only or good old wedgies. ;-)

A PA mixer def best suited for alternative applications, particularly at this price range. An SSL UF1 or UF8 would be much better, at 1/4 to 1/2 the price, IMO.

Been using it a lot more since I did this video and definitely something worth checking out. Very powerful as a mixer and with the integrated DAW control and small footprint it's very capable.

How it handles more than 8 tracks - do you just “paginate” thru them, or have to re-map inputs?
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 2 месяца назад
As a controller you just page through them in banks of 8. As a mixer you have 16 analog inputs at the back and 2 banks of faders. Two different types of usage, but you can also mix and match virtual inputs from DAW (USB) and physical analog inputs,

For some reason I confused this with your DMP7. It's an interesting piece of gear, and something that I could have done with 25 years ago. The difference between the DM3 and the DM3S ('Standard') appears to be that the latter lacks Dante, and is almost €500, or around 25%, less expensive.

Presonus Studio Live integrates very deeply with the Studio One DAW software just in case you did not know. But yes Yamaha integrates very well with Cubase. These software hardware integration relationships are very good for us.

I know you pay for the brand reputation and better integration with Cubase, but honestly the DM3 is way too expensive considdered how much more you get in a behringer X32 or Presonus series 3 Mixers. it can be expanded via Dante but then you will want the DM7 instead anyway if you seriously need that ammount of channels. It must be possible to design a new controller that works seemles together with cubase instead of the one that got discontinued if all people need is a physical channel strip controller instead of having to pay that much for a very stripped down Digital mixer. The quality of the product really have to mean something when you get twice as many channels and more versatillity in a Presonus/Midas or Behringer mixer if the mixer ability is also counted in. Thats just my opinion. Yamaha is not even trying to be competitive here and the DM7 system ... those prices is only for real pro's that knows what they want and where money don't matter 😅 As for the Mackie HUI control .. yes its possible to set up, but a more modern API is is really needed and I have seen pro's that is not happy to rely on even expensive controllers that rely on the old Mackie API. I know it's hard to be poor and want to work like the pro's. But really hope Yamaha / Steinberg could come up with just a "reasonable" quality controller where the fader works seemlessly together with cubase to take over the old one they had .. I forget what the model name was. The cheapest multi controller propably is a presonus fader port but same problem it will work with the Mackie HUI but not seemless integration with which tracks and what controls is active. If the DM3 was betwen 1/2 and 2/3 of the current price it might be of interest

The DM3 will not suit everyone, but it suits me. Small size, enough physical inputs and a perfect fit for both my laptop- and live needs. Price is irrelevant.

@@EspenKraft I wish I could say that too lol🥰 If I could get this with 16 channels and a firmware upgrade for full 32 channel multi channel record like the studio Live 32C for just a bit more than the Presonus I would jump right at it. You know Yamaha don't make junk. The first 01V was quite amazing for its time. Only thing about the Presonus I don't like or could be better, is .. it lacks Midi and using the AVB as direct connection to a DAW requires a Mac to work as interface as Windows and PC nics don't support AVB. This is natively supported on a Mac. I love the large size of the touch screen on the Yamaha
