If you love 80's hits, you want to watch this Yamaha DX7 demo, faithfully re-creating those 80's hits from a-ha Take On Me, Mr Mister Broken Winds, Europe, Berlin, Madonna and more.
This is a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer demo unlike any others.
I re-created the 80's hits and ground breaking songs, showcasing the true capability and versatility of the famous Yamaha DX7 synthesizer, going beyond those DX7 factory patches.

Featured Songs
Some of the songs are updated and re-mastered versions. The others are brand new songs that you will hear for the first time.
This is a list of the songs (but not in an order).
Updated/ re-mastered songs
Berlin Take My Breath Away - This is a re-creation of the famous song by Berlin. The video is re-mastered to show featured patches played by me.
Europe The Final Countdown - The new version includes the intro and an improved synth brass patch. Note that there is no layering, so you are hearing a single DX7 synth brass patch with a powerful presence.
Rush The Big Money - This is an emulation of the intro synth brass sound. The video is re-mastered with me playing the DX7. This is the only DX7 demo with layering (done during mixing).
Brand New Songs - Great songs to great hits
There are many brand new songs to re-create those great 80’s music.
a-ha Take On Me - Released in 1984, and thanks to MTV, this song with its creative music video became an iconic 80’s song of all time. It also really popularised the Yamaha DX7 as it features a DX7 slap bass. I re-created this song’s intro with the DX7 slap bass, pads and bell sounds.
Is it real? Howard Jones Pearl In The Shell - Can’t be the DX7, but real acoustic instrument!
This is one of the great songs from a great artist from the 80’s. He showcased how great music can be created by using sequencers, drum machines and synthesizers. He extensively used the Yamaha DX7 and Roland Jupitar-8 for creating some amazing basslines. This song also features a real brass section as well as a sampler for brass sounds. I re-created this song by using only the DX7 MKI, from a breathtaking brass section, as well as a Roland Jupitar-8 inspired beautiful analog pad sound. Excluding drums, all sounds including the bass, koto, FX, a brass section and pad are created by the DX7 MKI only.
Is it real? Pink Floyd Terminal Frost - Can’t be the DX7, but real acoustic instrument!
A legendary rock band released a ground breaking album in 1987. One of the featured songs has such a great composition with many acoustic instruments. I re-created this song using the DX7 MKI only, from a breathtaking grand piano, strings, alto sax as well as beautiful pads. Note that I replaced a guitar track with a beautiful strings sound. This demo showcases the true capability of the DX7.
Madonna Open Your Heart - The famous female singer form the 80’s, released this rock/dance song in 1986. With great tune and provocative lyrics, it was No.1 song in many countries. It features an amazing fast paced baseline and an iconic 80’s synth brass sounds that blends both synthetic, realistic and powerful characteristics. I re-created this song by using the DX7 powerful synth brass that faithfully emulate the iconic 80’s synth brass sound. Excluding drums, all sounds including the bass, bell soft pad, synth brass are from the DX7 MKI only. Note that I used a very different pad sound that combines a bell and a soft pad, to fill both the original pad sound and a vocal track.
Mr Mister Broken Wings - Released in 1985, a beautifully played, this song showcases some great songs from the 80’s. Slow and simple, yet very powerful and emotive song by the famous rock band of the mid 80’s. Except drums, all sounds from bass, strings pad, a female choir and a bell sounds are created by the DX7.
Mr Mister Kyrie - With amazing sequencing at the beginning, and a unique stab bass sequence, this song was another hit from the same famous rock band of the mid 80’s. I re-created this great song with the DX7, including a resonant flute, stab bass, pad, synth brass, bass, strings and the famous Tub Bells (beefed up version).
Peter Gabriel The Family And The Fishing Net - In 1981, this artist used the ground breaking synthesizer/ smapler, Fairlight CMI to create his album. This song featured many of the CMI sounds, including sampled brass and wind instrument, male choir etc. I re-created this song using my DX7 CMI inspired patches that rival a 12bit sampler including a male choir, flutes and sax. Its bass sound is an emulation of MiniMoog fat bass.

Really??? The Fender Stratocaster 1954 to present day covering every genre of 'non classical' music: rock n roll, ska, funk indie, punk, classic rock, metal, glam, folk rock, jazz, prog rock, disco, reggae, etc etc etc. Copied by every guitar manufacturer, the very stylistic definition of what an electric guitar looks like. The Yamaha DX7 1983 - 1989 covering electro pop, dance and hair metal until it became as unfashionable as slap bass and gated snare drums. Fun to program though.

People that call dx7 "trash" are stupid af! We all know the presets was overused in a way that makes some sounds "dated" but the synth itself is a master piece, unfortunately it was just to hard to program to create new timbers back then, but who dominate this beast, has unlimited power. I don't have a dx7 but I play with a volca fm (that is based on the dx7) and it's a glimpse of what fm synthesis is capable off.

The YMDX7 it's self is an amazing beast, but the synthesizer they made for it was kinda bleh, FM synthesis was already difficult with all the math n stuff behind it and the way they made the synthesizer didn't help with that. The YMDX21 or YMTX81Z was where it was at personally. Still tho, DX7 is a timeless synth that will always be great

No. It is a part of the 80:s for parts of some categories of music. The 80:s was also very much about true analog Synths combined with the classic Linn Drum machine sounds with a gated reverb on the snare. Also later on very much sampling. To me the analog Synths and the snare with gated reverb on it is really much about the 80:s. The Juno sound. Or the Jupiter 8. Yes, the DX7 was good for what it was when it was released. But totally overused sounds in middle of the road 80:s pop and, especially, Ballads (That Rhodes sounds). It can do so much more, like Brian Enos Ambient recordings. Or some basses in the "lately bass" (Solid Bass on the DX7) territory that were really good. The DX7 can be good if used sparsely on some Synth pop if you "sprinkle it here and there". Yes you can do stringpads and stuff like that in the "warmer category" of sounds if combined with the right effects. It is just that there are other Synths, mainly analog at the time, that do it better. The more atmospheric digital pads that evolve somehow, or are kind of "choir-like" in some styles are more effective!

It is indeed. Thanks for responding back. I was very young when it came out, only 3 years old but I was an extremely musically sensitive child with my earliest memories and feelings in life representative in these songs. I remember hearing this song in particular while driving through old semi-abandoned industrial areas of town near our house at the time. The eerie glow of the mercury street lamps around those areas at night seemed to represent the vibe and atmosphere I hear and feel in this song perfectly. That Pad synth sound. I suppose it's the way my young impressionable mind put everything together. Almost feels like a lost memory of something more powerful that I can't quite put my finger on. Great job on this video! Most knob twiddlers hate the DX7 because they can't just turn on the arpeggiator and wiggle the cutoff knob. If you can actually play keyboards and have a chorus pedal sitting around somewhere, you can get some incredible sounds from it. The sounds were so much more expressive than anything else from that era, too. Per-operator velocity, aftertouch, tremolo, and vibrato response was unheard of in the 80s, and every time I hear a good keyboardist playing one I'm still blown away.

@powerdx7383
@powerdx7383 6 лет назад
That's so true. I think when the DX7 was released in the 80's, people wanted something different from analog synths so they made sounds plasticky and shiny as opposed to what analog synths produced (fat and thick sounds). FM synthesis is great for creating a wide variety of harmonics/ inharmonious, so people wanted more metallic tones than what analog synths could produce (except for the famous DX7 BASS 1 which is just as fat as analog bass). That's probably one of the reasons why people have this fixed view of the DX7 which is only good for e.piano, bells and plastics and shiny sounds. That's unfortunate.

I am, was a lead guitar player for various travelling bands until the early 2000's. I also used to read many articles in several magazines about electronic keyboards and there was a time when so many comments about the Yamaha DX7 that was criticizing it for being maybe overused in many recordings. I thought, maybe, a few more keyboard users have gotten tired of the DX7 sounds or they might have moved on to some other newer models, at the time the Korg M-1 was gaining popularity. Anyway, I never lost my love for the sound of this very fascinating instrument. Even though i was a guitarist, first and foremost.

The Yamaha DX7 was my first synthesizer. I truly loved this instrument because of its brilliant sound quality. I played most of the songs in this video with my band. It sounded mind blowing. Thank you sir for hoping me relive that moment. I hope the DX7 sound patches are available in all instruments.

All of it is first class! So even the saxophone is DX7? Must have used a wind breath controller?
@powerdx7383
@powerdx7383 7 лет назад
Yes, I just couldn't stand those DX7 factory sax patches (designed for a breath controller, but they don't sound nothing like a sax), so I made my own DX7 sax patches ( must be over 30 of them, many of them are failures). I love that DX7 alto sax with amazing realism, yet uniquely DX7!!! No, I don't have a breath controller (I should have bought it back in the 80's), so it took a while to set key velocity sensitivity and envelopes right!!
@EgoShredder
@EgoShredder 7 лет назад
A friend gave me one of those Yamaha BC2 or 3 controllers in the 1990s, but I found it hard to use and required a strong input of breath. Having said that, I have tried to play real wind instruments with not much success!

Sorry, this is long... Being a synth player from back in the analog days to FM to current "soft synths, recording commercially licensed music.. it's awesome hearing you play all of those songs. I had a DX100 back in the day.. I should of never sold that. When I "Take my Breath Away" by Berlin... that DX7 Bass line wow.... I INSTANTLY get transported back in my mind to "those days", I remember "Top Gun" when it was first out in the "Drive in" movie theater. I also remember my first love... they say a man never quite loves a woman that same way again... but a song like that "one" from that group Berlin, and those memories back then as bittersweet as it is... those memories are a 100% burned in my brain forever. Thanks again for posting this video.

@fender1000100
@fender1000100 Год назад
It was important. But your statement is wrong. It was used on alot of hits. But not ALL. There was no DX7 1980 to summer 1983. And from 1987 other Keyboards took center stage like the Roland D50 and Korg M1. So the DX7 was prominent from 1984 to 1987. 4 years.
@undertheradar001
@undertheradar001 Год назад
@@fender1000100 There was the fairlight also, but hardly anybody could afford to access them outside a recording studio. The EMU emulator ii was another one of the defining keyboards also. I have the D50 (under roland cloud), dexed (free dx7 with heaps of other soundbanks (apart from dexed)) and the M1, all in vst. The roland cloud also gives access to heaps of other instruments including juno and jupiter. WIth VST instruments, it is a far better deal than buying a keyboard that cannot be repaired (due to little or no parts available). The worst thing about the original DX7 mk 1 was the fragile membrane keys which have a very finite life and only a mono sound output.
@fender1000100
@fender1000100 Год назад
@@undertheradar001 That's right. Once of the iconic Emulator moments. Is its use in Ferris Buellers day off movie. When he calls in sick to his school. And don't forget the mighty Synclavier too. I was in a recording studio in Poland Street in 1986. To watch a friend making an advert. And most of the sounds were done on a New England Synclavier. And they were EXPENSIVE. Back in the day. You could buy a house in some parts of the UK for what one of them brand new would set you back. Over £25K

Yamaha DX7... For me this was a long time a very boring synth 'cause everyone was just using the factory patches. Much too complex to program due to the poor user interface and the complexity of the FM synthesis. But once you dive into this synth and take your time to understand how things are working, you can give it kind of a second life as your videos are showing. Wow, I'm deeply impressed about your custom made patches! Looking forward to hear even more great demos from you. You should really think of offering your patches for a small fee! Thanks again for your vids!
@powerdx7383

Can't blame you. On RU-vid everyone is doing DX7 videos on those overused factory patches. I'm trying to educate people in the world that the DX7 is far more capable than those overused and uninspiring factory patches.

Thanks for your positive comments. I uploaded the epic 80;s digital synth demos, with Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50 and Korg M1. You can definitely see how capable the DX7 is even without sampled waveforms. ru-vid.com/group/PLS1dRgO-URANx7za-G2Rr2nNXgg1P6S6B

So true!! The DX7 capability was misrepresented to the world back in 1983. Once samplers became cheaper and hybrid synths became available, like the D-50 and M1, the DX7 is kind of lost its edge.....
@kungbombo20
@kungbombo20 6 лет назад
By that logic, then every synth in the entire World is boring just because many people uses factory patches. It isn't a synths fault if people uses a overused factory patches rather than making own. Blaming a synth by Calling it boring because many people uses factory patches is a kind of idiotic reasoning. Thats like saying photoshopping or game programming is boring just because there is some people who copy others contents rather than making a own content. Wouldn't be surprised if you Thinks DX7 is boring because of the fact that you can't program for shit and rather uses today dumbed down synths that any uncreative moron can use.
