Just a quick noodling on the classic Yamaha DX7 (1983) and RX5 (1986)
Recording notes: The preamps and EQ are from a Soundcraft Series 1600 console; there's a very small amount of EQ on the drum machine, and no eq on the DX7 at all; there's also some very light compression from SoundForge at 2:1 with 500ms attack. There are no other effects as I recorded this in ten mins.

Great video! First drum machine I ever bought in 1994 from a pawn shop. I still have it. My uncle had a Yamaha RY10 my father gave to me after he passed. I love ❤️ this keyboard 🎹😃so much nostalgia like traveling back in time. I’m looking to get one real soon!

That DX7 sound, it's always a great feeling playing and listening to this classic synth. Thanks also for the opportunity you gave me to listen and learn how the RX5 sounds; I've read about it, but listened for first time just now.

I'm now googling for the RX5. Seems like that rhythm machine was made for the DX7. I've owned the Dx7 twice now. The first time was the base model in the late 80's, the one I have now is the DX7 II FD that I plan on "FatMaxing". I love all synths, but my favorite era in music was the 80's dance dance, so I melt for anything DX/FM.. Give me great 80-90's Jazz, or some happy 80's pop and I'll be happy... oh and my cup of joe :p Great Jam session, thank you :)

I love that funk. I just found one of these RX5 machines. Now I just have to learn how to use it. :) I really love your how to videos. They've helped out a lot. Reading the owner's manuals can give me a headache sometimes. I enjoy learning visually. Please keep up the great videos. I appreciate it. :) Sam.

I think James Newton Howard is playing a Yamaha DX7 and RX5 of the film score of the late 80's and early & mid 90's. Such as, "The Package", "Pretty Woman", "Flatliners", "Falling Down", "The Fugitive", "Intersection", "Outbreak", and "Eye for an Eye".

Lol, I like the drum rolls around 2:40 , I know the rx5 was their flagship model, but I bought the rx7 because it has all the different sounds included & was more affordable, I think the difference is the 5 has all individual outs, I really just sampled them into mpc & daw. The dx7 is the 80's synth imho, but don't ask me to program it, it's no juno, lol. Nice vid.

@tinylilmatt I think there's a few more slight differences, if anything I think the RX7 sounds slightly better, same samples but different sound chip apparently. I haven't made a side by side comparison though. The individual sliders are pretty handy.

@tinylilmatt From: acreil.wordpress.com/2019/05/18/yamaha-rx5-waveform-data-cartridge-rom-dumps/ 🍋 The RX5 sample playback engine is based on the YM3907 ADG and YM3908 WDP ICs. These ICs were only used in the RX5 and PTX8. Together with the YM2415 OPAW IC used in the HX-1 and HX-3 organs and CLP50 digital piano, this was the first incarnation of Yamaha’s AWM sample playback engine. AWM has a very interesting design and an remarkably dirty sound, but no aliasing. The later RX7 uses the YM2409 GEW1 IC. The sample playback engine and sound are basically the same as the RX5 and PTX8, but its capabilities are different (16 note polyphony without fixed assignment of sounds to monophonic channels, larger waveform ROM, panning, LFOs, pseudo-delay effects, simpler envelopes, no mixer, only stereo outputs). The most flexible AWM model is the TX16w, which uses the GEW1 IC with two YM2412 ADF digital filter ICs. 🍋

Paolo, I didn't actually watch any of your content for quite some time now - years probably. Dunno why, always loved your content... I guess it got out of sight in the plethora of youtube content. Will activate the bell right away. That being said and adjusted, THIS is just what I needed. I am sitting at work, gazing out of the window into a autumn, foggy German late october morning, haha. Since I recently watched some Yamaha RX'ish / DX7 / D-50 and M1 content, youtube decided to present me this video. I'll just add some friggin looooong reverb now during playback, haha. Will start with a Lexicon 300, let's see - or HEAR. Anyway, great to see you're still very active. Love these harder techno jams! 🙂

Maybe the RX5 hasn't aged quite as well as some of the other vintage drum machines, but I do still love that bright crash in the fills.

@cgereu
@cgereu 8 лет назад
+monsterjazzlicks Sure!!, There is really not much difference, all single sounds could be exchanged, since DX7II was designed to be compatible with original DX7 sounds. A good way to organize your sounds and banks is to use DEXED VST/AU. I use it to preview sounds, copy them between banks and create custom banks. Than on MAC I just send them to DX7IIFD or TX802 with SNOIZE SysEx Librarian. Everything works great that way.

Sounds really great! I just have one question: does your audio go through some processing before recording? Yours just sounds much better than my DX7 II and RX7 do. Compression? Preamps?
@GeorgiosZaimis

There’s a disused RX5 sitting in our flat, disused because it lacks a power supply. I was wondering if I could get one from someplace such as Reverb.com - until late 2018. I had bought another Yamaha product, a DTX Multi 12 and stumbled upon its collection of RX samples. Realizing they had to be the original samples, I realized I had “just what I needed”, which was the raw sounds just to trigger with my fingers. Neat! Was that supposed to be a theme-and-variation on “Killer Joe” at approximately 4:40?

@SynthManiaDotCom
@SynthManiaDotCom 8 лет назад
+Diego Huijbregts What do you mean by "add together"? There's no MIDI in this video, I'm just playing the DX7 live on top of live running RX5 patterns. If you want to control the RX5 from the DX7, run DX7 MIDI Out to RX5 MIDI In, and viceversa if you want to control the DX7 from the RX5

Sorry for being dumber than dumb. Of course I just needed to link them both to a mixer, and hook it up to my speakers. Using an 80's Boss mixer, 16 channel, with these baby's. (I have some more laying around here, effect processors and piano modules.)
