The corrosion issues on our Yamaha F225 did all kinds of damage. In our breakdown of the bottom end of the powerhead, we saw how water had infiltrated oil passages, leading to oil leaking from the exhaust.
In this video, we’re going to rebuild the exhaust on our F225. There is an exhaust gasket kit for the F225 that has all of the parts you need to seal the upper casing on the outboard, and John will show you how to disassemble the upper casing, install the exhaust gasket kit, and then reassemble the upper casing.
The kit comes with different gaskets for the top of the upper casing. John will show you how to determine which gasket is right for your unit.

Just rebuilt mine. Between these videos and the manual it was a piece of cake. Had to buy all the parts individually since you cant find the full kit anymore. Id suggest new 2 upper and 2 lower large mounting bolts with nuts. Had to cut my lowers because nuts and end of bolt were so far gone. Otherwise the parts list from the "kit" was spot on. My 2003's corroded through after 20 years and 1100 hours. Easily ready to go another 20 now!

Great video and a great fix. Wish all outboard mechanics were as thorough and careful as you are! Last guy to work on this mid-section was a good example of how things can get done incorrectly at some repair shops.

I just want to say Thank You Very Much for your informative videos on the 2004 Yamaha exhaust rebuild. I performed all the work myself but I did buy all the parts from my local shop, the advantages were he told me some of the little parts to replace while I had the motor torn down. Like the collar on the crank for the oil pump and new oil pump. The rebuild was a success and the motor runs like new. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you 👍👍👍

Thank you for your videos. They are very informative. In this one, though, I believe the proper way to torque the bolts is to at least criss-cross them if the manual does not show a torque sequence. This allows the part / faces to be pulled down evenly. This is especially critical on aluminum parts.

Hello Boat Parts, Great and professional videos you make. I have a Yamaha F115 2002 model which is a 4-stroke. It needs a timingbelt replacement and I cannot seem to find any video of that on your channel. I sure would expect to find that before a lot of these other videos. Especially since it's a more regular type of maintenance (every 1000 hours or 5 years) and it is EXTREMELY important to do it correctly with the timing and all, or else you will completely destroy the engine! Really hope you could make one of those in your style of teaching😊

I see that you list the part number for the gasket kit for this repair, but isn't there a full kit with ALL of the replacement parts, not just the gaskets? If there is would anyone know the part number?

Love all of your videos John. How can I determine if my engine has an exhaust corrosion problem without a teardown? the Engine is a 2004 F225txrc with 350 hours total. I have a snake viewer camera that I might be able to use. What has concerned me is when the boat is lowered into the water, I see a small oil stain at the back of the engine. I would guess it is less than a few drops. The engine was serviced a few years ago but I don't know if anything was done at the carrier bearing. The boat has never sat in the water for more than a few days, it is on a trailer or a boat lift. I use the installed flush mech even if it ran for an hour. I do not use the mouse ears, too difficult to get to. I am the original owner.

hi, your videos are amazing, thank you so much! I have the 2004 LF225TXRC, which has had the same exhaust problem. I’ve been trying to confirm that I get all the right parts. I know you say 69J-W0001-21-00 (around $200), but I’m also hearing that I need MAR-EXHKT-04-00 (around $700). Does MAR-EXHKT-04-00 include the parts from 69J-W0001-21-00? How do I know if I need to get both? Thanks!

Hi John, I did the same job on my 2003 engine. After the assembly I have problems with overheating at idle speed, and water leaking from the exhaust rubber on the foot could you give me a suggestion of what to check could this be? SEAL 69J-45127-00-00 badly mounted or other THANKS

Hey guys I am putting a new to me powerhead on my ox66 200hp! On the top mid section mounting bolts there are gaskets. Mine are split where can I find them? Can not find a part number or description!! They are the 2 long bolts at the top with the cap on them! Any help would be awesome

Hello John, I have a 2003 225 Yamaha with 570 hours and I’m trying to determine if my engine has the corrosion issue. Is there a test to do that shows if you have the issue without taking the power head off? I see people taking out the lower unit and putting a water hose at the pick up tube, and if water comes out the dry exhaust port then they consider the engine failed the test and needs the corrosion kit.....is the water up the pick up tube an accurate test? Thank you

if you had removed the exhaust, and pretty much got it all apart, why not do a service/lube of the steering components to?, you are there, so why not?, esp. if the rest has been in such a state, why not just do all seals/mounts in the whole outboard motor, including the mounting brackets.

Thank you for this video. Have been looking for something like this for a year. I have a 2003 Yamaha 200 HP with around 500 hours on it. I am getting water in the engine oil after 16 hours on a new oil change. Took it to two shops. One did a compression test and all cylinders tested 190 to 200. They would not do anymore on it. Talked to a local dealer who would not work on it because he suspected there would be too much involved. Since no one will work on it, I have started. One thing I noticed when pulling the intake cowling was a water /oil mixture where the cowling connects. The motor runs fantastic and you would not know there was an issue if not checking the oil level regularly. Could this still be a head gasket issue? The dealer felt it was an oil chiller issue but would not elaborate. Neither shop felt it was the corrosion issue. Any ideas?

I noticed the same thing on my otherwise great running 2005 f225 only in the lowest starboard intake. I'm taking it because of visible exhaust corrosion, the motor was running great. is this normal or a sign of another problem i wonder?

@@tiiimay I am not sure if I have solved my problem yet. During the winter I removed the power head, lower unit and middle casing. (basically everything motor related off the boat) Installed new gaskets and seals for everything removed, including new water pump, just because I had it apart. After running motor for about 8 hours only at trolling speed there has been no difference in oil level. If this doesn't solve the water issue, I will check head gaskets port, starboard exhaust cover gaskets. Shooting in the dark as just looking for places that could leak.

@@michaelsimpson2449 Did you replace thermostats ? If they are stuck open the motors can run cold and make condensation in the oil

@@HydesRVBoatsRexford After removing the power head and completely tearing the middle and lower casings. I replaced all the seals and gaskets, put in back together and it has been fine. Did not see any obvious bad seals or gaskets tho.
