The best touring bike the money can buy.

Good job. FJR is and remains a great bike. :) Keep up.

Maybe we need 3 touring classes. Tourer, sports tourer(super duke gt, z1000sx etc., basically upright sports bikes with luggage). And the 3rd class should be SPORTY tourer😂. Like this, hayabusa and the like.

I don't agree on what he thinks is and isn't a sports tourer but whatever. 5/10 for the review.

Agreed!! Not a sports tourer? Come on!!

640lbs with a 4.9in clearance height and low foot pegs? Bike screams ride me in a straight line as much as possible. Straight comfort isn’t what sport touring is about... FJR took all the sport out of it

It's not a sports tourer, it's just a tourer? I'm rather perplexed about that statement and the basket you're put it in with Harleys and Goldwings. What exactly would you rate as a sports tourer, a Hayabusa a ZX14R?
@tldhthompson
@tldhthompson 8 лет назад
Exactly my point as well...if the FJR is not a sport tourer, than please show us what is!
@cobra60six
@cobra60six 8 лет назад
Quite right Tommy, to my mind the FJR could almost be regarded as the epitome of the genre.

Actually, putting it in with the gold wing is exactly where it belongs the bike focuses on comfort way too much for it to be sport touring. A sport touring bike is suppose to be a blend of the two. Not too comfortable but not too sporty .. Notable sport touring bikes are Super duke GT Vfr800/1200 R1200RS GSX-S1000f No one is hating on it... it’s a good touring bike, but it’s not a good sport touring bike

Texarmageddon "Not too comfortable" They would never sell a bike based on that phrase. You are like the narrator completely missing the mark. It is not about how close or far you are from crotch rocketery ...we are talking about touring bikes. Weight class, distance, power distribution. Comfort...though not ignored, is not pinnacle and actually seconds to ergonomics. Why? Because you cannot build a bike that will make a 5'2" rider just as happy as a 6'2" rider. It is impossible. But to say...in order to be a sport tour class...it has to be "not too comfortable"....is ridiculous. If someone feels that way...they are not looking to tour and they are shopping the wrong class of bike and should be looking at sport bikes.
@Texarmageddon
@Texarmageddon 6 лет назад
No we are talking about SPORT TOURING bikes not just touring bikes. If I wanted a bike to just tour on there are plenty of bikes in that category... Something I wouldn't mind picking up an FJR, C14, K1600, Goldwing, and a LONG list of cruisers, but when I pick up a sport touring bike.. I'm looking for a bike that is relatively comfortable ( which ironically an ergonomic bike tends to be comfortable), but sporty enough to where if I need to be aggressive I can. Hence, why I picked up VFR1200, Ninja 1000, Sprint ST1050 etc. If all you're looking for is a bunch of passing torque in a straight line and easy going into the turns all you're looking for is a cruiser... not a sport touring bike.

bought a ae model here in the uk would seem Yamaha dropped the ball and did not send enough so i got a ex demo. the lights are led and the most amazingly bright i have ever seen on a bike def get out of my way peasant jobs.the suspension is the thing FJR's need quality suspension and the ae is the biz this is my 5th fjr, i love them and this gives me so much confidence in the bendy bits. it is heavy and not R6 nimble and as we know gravity gets stronger as we get older but it is fast and when in the zone you cover ground fast love this bike.

I've been riding the FJR since Aug 2015 (13,000 miles so far) and must disagree that it is strictly a tourer and not a sport tourer. Do you say the same about the R1200RT? Concours? Multistrada? I've had touring machines and this is absolutely a sport tourer and even supersport tourer.
@newera478
@newera478 8 лет назад
As someone who has ridden mainly on FJR since I've gotten my licence for all sized bikes (5 years ago) I must agree with you. FJR truly is a sport touring bike. And one of the comfiest bikes for me so far. For FJR alone I've clocked in around 30,000km (around 18,000 miles). That including two longer trips around Europe with each of them being 10,000km.
@Texarmageddon
@Texarmageddon 7 лет назад
Tommy Thompson oh lord stop it.. I consider both the Concours and FJR touring bikes... they focus on nothing but absolute comfort. Second, the multistrada is an adventure touring bike and has always been marketed as an adventure bike. The R1200RT is another bike here you have Placed in the wrong category. You can go straight to BMWs website and they don’t even say the word sport touring bike ONCE for the 1200RT. The BMW sport touring bike is the 1200RS.. Same power , lower handle bars, higher pegs smaller gas tank, less weight, and marketed as a sport touring bike. Bikes that would take the super sport touring would be the super duke GT and the Motus MST bikes

I WIIIISH Yamaha would make a Hayabusa and ZX14r competitor. This is half that, half something else. Brilliant bike, bulletproof. But it needs a update in styling and tech. Plus a sporty hyper tourer Hayabusa competitor. Come on Yam!

How about vibration? How long until your fingers started to go numb or your feet/toes?

They don't, in my experience. I've ridden mine for long trips in France and Germany. Never had issues with vibes.

You get paid to ride someone else's bike round a racetrack, and on roads in the sun, and you're still miserable? WTF must you be like on a wet Monday in January back home??

Maybe you can help,, I’m looking at buying a 2017 fjr1300 but the problem is,, it is white,, not police white a off white,, I ran a vin check and it comes up with no accidents no salvage and no theft,,do you know if Yamaha made any white models in 2017..don’t want to buy a bike that was in an accident..strange that someone would decide to paint a bike and pick white

Why superimpose fake engine noises? Either use the real audio from the clips or use nothing.

Wow, it's got a slipper clutch and 6 gears. Hardly ground breaking technology these days.

What do you expect then? Starts at a lower price than the BMW 1200RT. What's the price of a 1600GT?
@johnjones3648
@johnjones3648 8 лет назад
Yes you do............higher maintenance costs and much higher overall price of ownership. Not everyone can afford a $26.000 motorcycle.

In what ways is it better? In my perspective it's precisely the other way around.

I own a Yamaha Venture Star, 1992, 1300cc V-4, with that awesome engine. I spoke to a 1600GT owner who had had such a Venture, and he told me the Venture is more comfortable, especially the passenger seat (best in class) and nicer on the throttle. He stated that the 1600 GT is more nervous on the throttle but sportier in the twisties.
@johnjones3648
@johnjones3648 8 лет назад
The Venture Star engine is not the same engine as the FJR. The Venture engine is based off of the Gen 1 Vmax. The FJR is an inline 4. I've owned both and I'll take the super torque of the FJR any day!!

I think the fjr is a really good bike, but it is not great. It is like a Toyota Camry and does a lot of things pretty good. I have ridden both the older and newer fjr bikes and the one thing that I and several others have noticed that the leg position even when adjusted is hard to handle for medium to long rides. Also the seat is really bad although better than previous years. It is a smooth bike and acceleration is acceptable, but nothing exciting. I am not sure what Yamaha will do to add some excitement to this bike, if the answer is nothing then I say; simply buy a touring bike and be comfortable and carry more luggage.

Steve, where's the fire? You sound so rushed, like you did the voiceover while waiting for the Saturday game to begin. Had to stop halfway, didn't hear half of what you said. Sorry to be blunt!

Have you riden the FJ1300 and if yes how does it compare to the VFR1200? I am thinking about selling my VFR and getting the FJ or the Concourse. Thank you

I am just about to change my 2008 FJR1300 for a 2012 VFR1200X Crosstourer. I love my FJR, but i find the weight is too top heavy at low speeds which restricts me to a certain type of road. In the UK, we have a lot of narrow single track roads which are fun to explore on the right motorcycle. But if you live in the US, it would be the perfect choice, if you enjoy touring at high speed

1964tonto , i will leave mij kawa gtr probably for a vfr1200x . Seatposistion / weight / size -reasons... Is the vfr1200x good for duo-riding ?
@1964tonto
@1964tonto 7 лет назад
The Crosstourer is better for duo-riding. I hardly notice any difference in performance and handling when my wife is on the back, whereas I could on my FJR, and she says the pillion seat is more comfortable than the FJR as well
