Good job Jeff…you’re correct with the oil dipstick check procedure. If the dipstick screws in, lay it on top to measure. If it pushes in, push it all the way in to measure. Every motorcyclist with a screw in dipstick on their bike will remember this rule.

What I think is awesome is that everyone has their own style. I use antifreeze, but you’re correct Jeff regarding no mention of it in Yamaha manual. It’s simply just added protection at a cost of $15 for me, cheap peace of mind for any potential water pockets that may not drain entirely. I don’t restart after fogging as I want the protective qualities of the fogging oil to remain on the internals. I even put a few squirts into each cylinder. Like I said, everyone has their own style, great video.

What about getting antifreeze through the thermostat?? Isn’t it important to get the motor up to running temp and then draw the -50 into the thermostat?

Nice video. Thanks for making. My tip: I put a dog potty training pad under the engine area when changing oil filter. Super absorbent and there is no mess to oily wipe up from the bilge area. 👍👍

Yes, we have used the pet training pads to do oil changes on our watercraft for years - makes it super easy to clean up.

Because I'm OCD on preventative maintenance, and I purchased 4-5 quarts to begin with, I will change the oil twice. Suck the oil out, refill the crankcase, run the engine for a few more minutes. Rinse repeat. Same way I service transmissions if I have access to the cooler lines. Need to get the oil out of the torque converter. Love the videos Jeff...

Remember, it's your boat. If you want to use antifreeze go for it but don't let anybody tell you that you have too.

Hello Jeff. 1st boat. Started learning to winterize. I have a 2015 sx192 that is leaking oil from the pan bolt (9mm?) or a Hex an inch away. Very difficult access. Have to shorten hex tool to get at hex.

Do you have any suggestions concerning tools or methods to stop this leak. Added oil all summer but leak is getting bad. Yamaha is brutal with repair to simple problems.

Hi Jeff, your videos are great patience and details, I feel not nervous now taken car of my boat. The part where you spray fog stuff into those 4 carb. is there a cleaner that I can use to clean or degrease etc. I notice the air filter had some oil either splash up etc. I don't want just to use anything to, any help greatly appricated? thanks keep it up, please
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis Год назад
First, those are not Carbs they are throttle bodies. 2nd, the reason you have oil on your air filter is your engine oil reservoir is too full of oil and is puking it out the crank vent. These engine have a Dry Sump oil system (Like a Corvette) not a wet sump (like 99% of cars/truck/motorcycles on the planet) It is common to see people over fill their oil tank because they have no clue what or how a dry sump works. 3rd, I would just wipe up the excess oil, change your spark plugs and you are good. Remember, you engine runs on gasoline(aka OIL) and I would not spray any degreasers down the throat of the intake. I hope this makes sense.
@demolaj1
@demolaj1 3 года назад
Jeff , just check for oil level beofre you do the change if it is spot on , just add back exactly what you removed .. the extractor resovior should have lines on it to mark each quart, and by the way when boat is sitting long periods you want the oil level right at the high mark so the crank shaft / bearings are completely covered and protected ..also i never even attempt to start boat with oil sitting over 6 months as well as the filter . as the media inside could start to decay , especially non synthetic oil .. the first thing the boat gets done in spring is new oil and filter before even attempting to start it ...
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis 3 года назад
These boats are a dry sump not a wet sump like other boats(GM, Ford, Volvo). Stern drive way of life does not apply to these engines. These engines do not have a oil pan like what you are thinking, the oil is injected from the reservoir to various areas of the rotating assembly and heads. So when you fill to the full line of the oil dipstick you are only filling the reservoir higher and nothing else in the engine.

@@JeffDoesThis i see .. i have the 1.8L motors dont think they are dry sump ...

Hi Jeff. Love your video do you put anything in the gas tank for winterize ? Also is the gas tank has to be full?
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis Год назад
I add Stabilizer to the gas. Sometimes I fill it up and sometimes it will sit with only 1/4 tank.

Hey Jeff, Great Video! I have a 2001 Yamaha LS2000 2-stoke with Carbs. will fogging be enough or do I need to get gas out of carbs? My boat is in a warm garage will sit for 6 months! Thank you!
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis Год назад
I would pour a bottle of stabilizer in the fuel, run it for 10 minutes, and you will be just fine. Plus, fogging it.

Hey Jeff, I am also located in Illinois and looking to try winterizing my 2007 sx230 on my own this year. With work being what it has been, I've only been able to take the boat out 2 times this year (around 18 hours total on the water and maybe 6 hours of actual drive time.) The question I have is whether or not I would need to replace the oil and filter with such little use? I appreciate your feedback and will definitely be referencing your videos during this process.
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis 2 года назад
Yes, you will still want to. Your engine will accumulate moisture over time and I would do it at the end of the season. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Jeff really enjoy your videos. I do have a question. I have a Yamaha SX230 twin jet drive, have you ever changed out the rubber coupling in the drive shaft? Any info would be much appreciated.
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis 2 года назад
The coupling should last a long, long time, like over a 1000 hours. Unless you spray the rubber with some kind of chemical that will cause it to deteriorate that would be the only reason to replace.
@marcpowers4659
@marcpowers4659 2 года назад
Well the last time I was out it seems that either the spines are gone on the port engine, or the coupling is gone. The impeller will turn, but under it won’t under load. I’m pretty sure it’s a coupling that gone.

Jeff, just changed the oil on my 2005 yamaha sx230 . I started the engine the red light stay on . What does that indicate is that mean I have to add more oil?
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis Год назад
If the Oil Light stays on then you have low oil pressure. If you just changed your oil I would guess you are low on oil in the reservoir. Check your oil level.

new boat owner question, I guess it's safe to assume that changing the oil before winterizing is better than letting the old oil sit in the engine all winter?
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis Год назад
Correct. The new oil will coat your engine's internal components better and not dry out as fast. If you live somewhere south and your boat only sits for 2 or 3 months then it doesn't matter.

yes run the pink stuff in .. each motor .. wait a few days then start again to get any residual large amounts out ... then start fogging procedure you can run engine cold for 30 seconds without water and its plenty of time to fog it ...

Jeff what about the antifreeze in your bilge pump?
@JeffDoesThis
@JeffDoesThis 3 года назад
Nope. There is no check valve in a bilge pump so any water in the line just runs back down to the lowest point and drains out of the pump. Test it, take your garden hose and spray water in to the outlet and see if you hose fills up with water.
@JeffDoesThis

Or blow into it and see if it pressurizes.

@@JeffDoesThis thanks for the reply. I’m actually trying to buy a private sellers 2014 AR 192 . I’m going to have to winterize it’s since I’m up in New England and I’m trying to get as much info on the jet boats as possible. I didn’t realize that they do not trap water in the cooling system. I’m the guy who feels better putting in the pink -50 lol 😂. 🤷🏻‍♂️
