Note: For the engine oil, most Full Synthetic 10W-40 four stroke oils will do fine, but make sure it is: "API service SG type or higher, JASO standard MA" - this is from the manual.
Howdy! Here's a quick video showing the general maintenance to be conducted at the 2-year mark on the Yamaha Kodiak 450. The only things I'm not doing are replacing the brake fluid and checking the valves for clearance. In this video I cover changing the air filter, engine oil and filter, both front and rear diff fluid, coolant and spark plug. I also show where to grease suspension and drive shaft and how to do visual inspection on various items. Thank you for watching and please share if you know any maintenance tips on these machines.

Howdy ThomperBeThompin, I wrote you awhile back in regards to my 4 wheeler. A Yamaha Beartracker 250. you and your friends were at the Hatfield and McCoy trails. I wanted to say ty for the encouraging words. I took my ATV to a local service center for a go over to make sure I didn't get taken. My ATV was in great condition. I have been out at local park to ride. Met some really nice people. My Son has a Kawasaki Brute Force 750. were the ATVs you were riding one was a rental. If possible do you remember how much it was to rent. love the vids , keep them coming

Right on, man! Thanks for watching. If I recall, the price was $500 or a little bit over that for a 48 hr rental. Pretty steep prices, but ATV rentals down there are becoming more rare. I spoke to some rental companies and many are focusing more on side by sides. My guess is safety and better profits.

Seems you can run GL-5 gear oil both in the front diff and the rear diff. I spoke to the Yamaha Parts guy and he said that the Yamaha Friction Modified Shaft Drive Gear Oil is GL-5 oil, that they put in both front and back diffs. The GL-5 is required for the wet break in the rear diff, but works perfectly fine in the front diff too. Good video, thanks.

I have a 2018 Yamaha Kodiak 450. The wheel bearing zurc fittings must be loosened to apply grease, then half of it spurts out. Is there a fix for this?
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin Год назад
is it coming back out the nip? If so, might have enough in there already. Tough to say without looking at it.

I just bought a kodiak 450 eps brand new. I have 16 hours on it but I noticed there is a ticking noise at slow speeds but then once I go above 15-20 it goes away. Does your kodiak have that ticking noise at slow speeds. I cannot tell if it coming from the engine or something else.
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin 2 года назад
No, I definitely don't have any ticking noises. Consider checking your entire exhaust system for leaks from the header pipe all the way back. Does the ticking noise speed up and slow down with rpms? Or is it more consistent with miles per hour?

Great video! I'm trying to decide between 2023 Kodiak 450eps se and a King Quad 500 and in the owners manual of the 450 it has for every 6 months to replace the oil/oil filter, final gear oil, greasing the drive shaft joint and knuckle pivots. Just wondering if that is the normal maintenance schedule of an actual owner?
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin Год назад
Can't go wrong with either of those choices as they're both great machines that would serve you well. If I were choosing between those two, I'd go for the Kodiak all day for several reasons. I prefer the handlebar bend on the Yamaha's compared to Suzukis (easier to stand up and ride) and I also much prefer the footboards compared to the King Quads. Both will be reliable and capable - I recommend sitting on each to test out ergonomics. As far as maintenance, I did an oil change every year. If I rode a lot more, I'd do it every 6 months - takes 15 minutes honestly. Air filters 1-2 times a year, but I don't ride in very dusty conditions, otherwise would do that more often - takes 5 minutes. Final gear oil is once every 2 years for me, but again, if I rode more I'd do it once annually at the most. Drive shaft U-joints and knuckles could be every 1-2 years based on usage and how much water/mud/dust you ride through - also pretty simple and quick with a quality grease gun. Don't forget new coolant every 2 years, but that's every machine. Hope this helps!

@@ThomperBeThompin dude, thank you so much for the quick and thorough reply! i really appreciate it. I'm leaning towards the kodiak only problem is there's not one close. so i'd have to do some traveling to get it. we'll see though

Hey, just wanted to give an update.. after all the looking, finally decided on a 2023 kodiak 700 se. I love the tatical black look and just the quick rides have been a blast already. I assume the maintenance is probably the same or close to the 450 in your video?
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin Год назад
@@bama314 Right on, man. Congrats! I have found with my Grizzly 700 that I recently purchased that the maintenance is basically the same stuff (just different amounts of oil, etc). Yamaha maintenance is pretty basic and easy across their utility lineup.

Where do you find the correct size crush washers for the diff bolts? Did it come with a kit?
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin Год назад
If you order a kit through rocky mountain they usually come with them. Otherwise I would have to check out a schematic and see a part number.

Great video.. so I have also a 2018 kodiak 450 4x4.. does it comes with a fuel filter .? I tried buying one.. but can’t find it. Also does it has a petcock valve??
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin 2 года назад
The 2018s and newer are fuel injected so no petcock. Not sure about the fuel filter weather and in tank or an inline one. If there was one I imagine it would be in the owner's manual under a maintenance item

first thing you did was soda the air filter in a blue oil. Didn't say what that was. Does it come with the filter?
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin Год назад
It's just air filter oil. Some filters come pre-oiled but most come dry and you got the oil them. Completely saturate it then ring it out as much as you can.

@iv.st.3971

What is this disaster, Yamaha with high reputation (as they said), for simple engine oil and filter change you have to disassembled more than half of the plastic, especially to find location on oil filter. On my Kawasaki Brute Force it take me 5-10 min. to do engine oil and filter with out touching any plastic. Shame for Yamaha engineering
@ThomperBeThompin
@ThomperBeThompin 2 года назад
It's only three bolts for the side cover, I took off the other plastics to do the coolant replacement.
