In this video I am playing on the beautiful Yamaha Live Custom 4-piece shell sack. This all-oak drum kit has a punchy sound with great tone that is ideal for any live setting, and since these drums project forward so well, while giving the drummer really nice feel and nuance, they will make great studio drums as well.
The oak plies on this Yamaha Live Custom are 10% thicker then their Oak Custom drums and that helps to deliver that big tone. With this shell pack you get 7" x 10" and 8" x 12" rack toms, a 15" x 16" floor tom, and a 18" x 22" kick drum. The kick drum is eight-ply and 9.6mm thick while the toms are six plies and 7.2mm thick. All of the drums have perfect 45-degree bearing edges. The hardware for this kit is really nice and has a dark silver finish to it which adds to the elegant look. A few of the highlights are the Y.E.S.S Mount System for the rack toms that has minimal contact with the shell and lets the toms resonate freely, 2.3mm Dyna Hoops, and Yamaha's exclusive Absolute Lugs.
The finish on the drum kit is gorgeous. Yamaha calls it Emerald Shadow Sunburst. You can see the beautiful oak woodgrain underneath the rich green color in the middle of the drum and then it fades to black.
This is one nice drum kit that is an awful lot of fun to play on. It is nice when a drum kit inspires you to jam just from its sound and feel. This Yamaha Live Custom definitely brings those things and more. It has a great look, big sound, and will be able to deliver in live or studio situations of any kind. If it is time for your next drum kit then take a look at this Yamaha Live Custom 4-piece shell pack. It delivers the goods!

I would throw Evans G2 coated on this kit for a warmer sound.

Good to see the rack toms attached to the bass drum and not the cymbal stands or on seperate stands.

easier to do with a 20 inch kick. I chose to use a stand with my larger kick because I'm not a taller person. I think we all set our kits up for comfort. some people i suppose for looks but they're not in it for the right reason I'm guessing lol

These are great drums. The room is a auditorium and its bouncy. We are hearing a lot of room reverb through the Mics.

I think the heads weren't the right ones for this kit
@tuulofdstrxn
@tuulofdstrxn 7 лет назад
I don't think it's the heads. Live Customs, just as the Oak Customs that preceded them, project almost only their attack sound and next to none of their amazing tone. If you'd want to get a better idea of their true sound, the shells would need separate close up mics.

It’s because they used to not, so at one point it was a selling point, & overall it still is to a degree, head manufactures and drum manufactures still try to improve upon it, but to be more realistic it’s mostly just there to sound like you’re getting more than you are like with most product descriptions
@boromir_8428
@boromir_8428 4 года назад
Would sound mush better with Evans G2 clear IMO. They have better rebound feel and warmer. Those Remo`s are to punchy and dry for oak shells.

All Yamaha drums sound just fine. In the old days, they had the YD-7000 and top of the line YD- 9000. Simpler times. The competition between drum companies is staggering these days. In the late 60's My Rogers R-360 kit was made by Yamaha. They really were well made!

The drums didn't sound great to my ears especially compared to the Tama Imperialstar review for example. Perhaps it is an issue with the heads or mics lie some have said. Maybe it's all subjective also.

I got a set in this finish. Still waiting for replacement for damaged bass drum. Jim Haler from Yamaha called me and has no replacement. Have to wait for shipment to arrive through Customs. Hopefully I do not wind up six month's down the road still waiting.

Yamaha would be my favorite if they didn't have the Yess mounts. I have a 1990 maple/Mahogany custom 9 piece and they are so dead because of the mounts and I hate it.

Really? My absolute maple noveau 90s kit has great body on the toms and I’m considering running it back as my main rig over my sonor prolites. The prolites sound good but they don’t have the body of projection in the rack toms that my good old absolute noveau has. I don’t know it’s a tough choice, sometimes I wish I didn’t buy my sonor Prolites because my ocd drives me crazy on which I should use now.

@prizefighter7607 8 лет назад
+Rico Horton Why is that a bad thing?
@ricohorton
@ricohorton 8 лет назад
+PrizeFighter pressed metal airvents have been known to become loose and rattle in the vent. a vent that has a screw back is best.

Rico Horton Hmm, I've played the same Yamaha kit for 15+ years, and have never had a problem with any of the hardware coming loose.

@golferal 8 лет назад
+Rico Horton I'll agree with PrizeFighter in that I've owned two different Yamaha kits, one Stage Custom (entry level) and my current Maple Customs (high end) and have never heard of the air vents coming loose. I have a friend with a 20 year old Recording Custom kit that has been gigged literally THOUSANDS of times with no issues.
@ricohorton

Live customs are my favorite Yamaha kit but still wouldn’t purchase one. I’m a tama guy and tama Starclassic BB’s are better and more value and cheaper. And the hardware and mounting system is much better on the Starclassics. But I think tama has the best hardware in the business and the best drums at the best prices on every single level from intermediate beginner imperialstar, mid level superstar and silverstar, pro level starclassic bb, maple or Bubinga, and then flag ship star models. But I think Yamaha is the second best company and still make some great drums.
