I love this demo . All the other demos are pianos and acoustic which I don’t really care about, a piano is a piano, and if I need better I have NI Komplete; I want to hear the pads/leads/drum kits and fx
And Yamaha is making a big deal about the MODX’s ability to import older DX patches, yet many of them won’t play the same way without aftertouch. Even the lower-end 4op DX11 had aftertouch.
Thank you. Without aftertouch, it feels like you're missing a sense organ, an important medium of emotional expression. Oh, and of course you'd require a pitch/mod.-JOYSTICK (no f*cking wheels) ;-) but that's another story.
@@rodneylee4026 After further research, I found out you can add the sounds from the DX7 and TX libraries! You can preorder it. 61 key is going for $1,299
Good first synth? Would be using mainly in a recording environment. I basically just want faithful DX7 synthesis, and this new stuff sounds even better.
Hi Dom, and thanks for all the great work! - All these sounds are also in the Montage, yes? (I have read Phil write that future sounds developed on the MODX will NOT be loadable into a Montage.) PS - the lightweight combined with the Montage subset features will make this a sure winner for Yamaha! thanks. PS - GREAT Feel at 3:12!!! wow.
Several months back one of the local Yamaha resellers mentioned that Yamaha hinted at coming out with a pared down version of the Montage in August. I was looking at maybe getting a Montage for quite some time. I just loved the sounds that it produces. But it really is way more machine than I need, because I won't really dive into the whole FM programming. So when August came and went I just figured it was vaporware. Then the other day there was mention (leaks) about Yamaha officially releasing something new today. So not that it is out I can't wait to try one out. Thanks for this first look and sounds video Doctor Mix.
Very nice synth but I was diggin that Atari shirt!! I'm so old I had a "heavy sixer" vintage 1978! LOL!! Wish I still had it but I do still have my 1982 vintage Atari 800 with a whopping 48K. ;-)
Hi Dom I just played the Montage 8 today at the music shop and it was f*** amazing in all aspects. I am definitely firm on my purchase. There was an MOXF8 near it which had plastic bulid and worse key action, prolly the MODX is gonna be similiar chassis so I won't bother.. I need something pro, the best of the best
Clavier très intéressant par rapport à son prix, l'important reste de faire de la musique,et si l'on peut le faire sans se ruiner. Une très bonne continuation musicale.
If I could afford that thing, I am pretty sure that I would have a lot of fun with it. God! I wish I had that keyboard along with the past ones that you guys have showed. I would like this one, the Yamaha reface CP, and YC.
Dom or Doctor mix, also, can you do tutorial of Montage of good options/uses of Aftertouch in a synth/keyboard? what should one be assigning? like other than Vibrato/pitch or filter is there other uses?
ron and wood if they would add these materials I imagine what would be the price of these tools yesterday looked at the store PSR S 970 wondered what to give 2000$ ? for plastic ? keys creak like a child's toy
It lacks phisical buttons in the right which I use to change sounds while playing on my yamaha mox. I guess you have to use the touch screen... Is it a good solution for live performance on stages? Other than that it's perfect
I noticed this as well; I often use the button grid on the right to change sounds without needing to look down at the display at all. This is a major loss.
Some people were talking about a little bit of lag with the touch screen. Even though it doesn't have asked to touch this no category search is really making me think hard about that
It looks logical. The same they did with the Motif XF and the MoXF it's now with the Montage (I own one) and the MODX. Same than Korg is doing with the Kronos/Kross. The market shows the path for the brands. All it's about sound generation (AWM) and the architecture itself. Same than the Montage, same OS also. In my point of view AWM engine sounds more than great and the DX engine too.
I had a DX-7 for years. I loved the keyboard and all the expressive capabilities. One of those expressive capabilities that was very powerful was aftertouch. The MODX does NOT have aftertouch. A complete fail on Yamaha’s part.
Can you create your own beats on this ? Like when your in pattern mode and sequence mode on the other yamaha boards? This will be the deal breaker for me. Because i didn't see a pattern mode on this board.
Why didn’t this exist two weeks ago when I was deciding between the Roland Fa06/Juno Ds61 and the Korg Kross?! I ended up buying the Fa06, but this looks like Yamaha’s competitor against those two, having the nice acoustic sounds, while also having synthy stuff as well. Would be fun to see a competition video or a comparison at least between the three!
I have a Juno DS 61 and will stay with Roland because for me Roland is easier to figure out and the analog sounds on it sounded better than the competition at the time.
TechGently I sold the FA about a week ago just cause I was too busy in the menus or trying to program stuff rather than making music. The sounds were fantastic but idk, I just wasn’t feeling it. I sadly play drums too and spend way too much money on them too, so I decided to overall just save the money and put it aside towards anything kinda drum related like samples or cymbals or drum heads
Like everything on the keyboard played well, it just wasn’t everything I thought it would be. And between also being a drummer and musician that’s spends to much money, I decided it would just be better to save it
I love my moxf and it will keep me happy for many more years, but I look forward to owning one of these down the road. I think Yamaha have done a grand job and focused on what players want, keeping the music enjoyable (any Yamaha MOxxxx synth delivers the smile when you play) is so important. An instrument is to be played and inspire you, save all that modular beeping bollocks that never gets used to the nerds. 😄
This is going to be a game changer. 90% of the capabilities of a Montage for 50% of the price (or less) at 33% of the weight. It makes the entire Motif series, the Roland FA and most of Korg's range obsolete overnight. It's simply a new standard in price, performance, sound and portability.
Hey, I own a Montage, Kronos and MOXF among other gear, so I'm just calling it as I see it. My Montage is the star of my studio but it was way too expensive and it remains too heavy and big to gig with. Yamaha has kept the sound, motion engine, FM and everything that I like about the Montage but made it half the price and easily giggable. It's like if Porsche started building 911's for Mazda Miata money, but these 911's also seat six easily. I own a MOXF8 (like I said) and compared to this, I think it's obsolete. The MODX has all of my MOXFs sounds but also hundreds of much better ones--including pianos and EPs that are just light years better. Sometime hyperbole is the right level of reaction.
do you work for yamaha lol.....it has no after touch, no sequencer, no sampling and limited midi fuctions. and half the polyphony of the montage in dx mode. so yea its limited ...not a game changer at all lol
Ok, it has no after touch. So what? Neither did the MOXF or most of the synths in this price range. Anyway, some people, myself included, rarely ever use it The sequencer is a more controversial item. It does have a 16-track sequencer, but you can't really edit with it--only overwrite tracks that you don't like. As with the Montage, Yamaha expects that most users will use a DAW for sequencing. They even include a copy of CuBase to use for this. Some people find this reasonable. Personally, I think editing sequences in keyboard hardware is straight out of the 1990's, and I don't use it on instruments like the Kronos that can do it. It has no sampling, but it has 1.5 Gb to store Montage or Motif samples. That's good enough for me.. Also, it's a big improvement on the MOXF (where you had to buy an expensive flash RAM board) or most competitors (which can(t import any samples at all). Not sure what you mean by "limited MIDI functions", but it also has good USB connectors available. And half of the FM polyphony with 64 notes will be plenty for most people--especially when most competing synths have no FM engine at all. I don't work for Yamaha--but I am a big fan of their gear. I have a Montage 8 and a MOXF 8, and I can see that the MODX combines the best features of both units in a very appealing way. I might even replace both of these keyboards with one MODX.
It appears that MODX, like the Montage, is professionally CRIPPLED by the inability to assign the MIDI receive channel per part. I'm still in disbelief that this core functionality (necessary for programming splits and layers for external controllers, such as a second keyboard), was senselessly stripped from MODX and Montage, despite being present in EVERY OTHER flagship synth on the market, including Motif! Despite repeated and numerous complaints, Yamaha has done absolutely NOTHING to correct this oversight. Apparently, Yamaha simply no longer cares if you intend to use MODX or Montage as a master keyboard. Performing musicians, BEWARE!!!
It's definitely multi-timbral. Each 'performance' consists of up to 16 parts, which combine to give multi-timbral sound. The problem is that part 1 is permanently hardcoded to MIDI receive channel 1, part 2 is permanently hardcoded to MIDI receive channel 2, etc. This means that your second keyboard will only be able to play a single part of a performance at a time - whatever part corresponds to the MIDI channel your second keyboard transmits. In practice, this means you can't program splits or layers for your second keyboard.
Yes, but each MIDI channel controls ONLY a single part. And this is the problem. External controllers almost universally transmit on a single MIDI channel only. This means that when using an external controller, you'll be able to play AT MOST a single part of MODX or Montage from that controller at a time. This means you cannot program splits or layers for external controllers. You CAN do this on Kronos or even Motif.
Too bad the knob functions can’t be assigned to aftertouch. I wonder if they can be assigned to a foot pedal. The need to constantly take one hand off the keys will get annoying real quick.
