A huge thank you to Yamaha Music Singapore for loaning me the amazing new MONTAGE M8X Music Synthesizer, and for sponsoring this video. In the past week that I have had the unit in my studio, I have been slowly exploring the depths of this wonderfully complex machine, with particular focus on the AN-X virtual analogue synthesizer engine that now comes included with the three new MONTAGE M models. I've been rather blown away by just how expressive the instrument is, particularly with the polyphonic aftertouch that is available on the 88-key model I am using.
This video features two patches. The first one is a Vangelis inspired patch I made from scratch (which is incredibly easy to do now thanks to the new screen above the control knobs). The second is a modified preset from the factory bank. In this video I explore the nooks and crannies of both of these patches, which feature the AN-X engine at their respective cores.

You can’t judge this machine on a video. Some of the best and most knowledgeable synth people have stated that this could be the first synth that could satisfy virtually all their synth needs in one package. This machine is a beast.

This or t he yamaha es with and analog card Vl virtual acoustic card and Dx7 FM card And I think 128 voices Or the yamaha eat with even more sounf engines but a weak processor or not much polyphony slow sample storage and reading and sequencer that cannot keep upnwith bad timing. Because of the weak processor Maybe upgrading the cpu inside can help. But that ex5 thing sounds amazing! No poly aftertouch but breath control 2 expression pedals sustain ribbon pitch mod and 3rd assignable mod wheel and ads in able buttons.

I wonder why those same people would think that the Kronos couldn't do that (except for polyphonic AT)

@@JuliusDeBerryJr kronos can ofcourse but in a different way. This seems to be the perfect combination of features look workflow playability fast sound loading compatible huge polyphony live workflow audio interface upcoming plugin etc. like Leo now with a huge library..dx7 motif motif xf montage modx an1x. But still no vl virtual acoustic engine or formant fear engine

PAT is only on the M8X, not the others. So, there's that to consider as well.@@JuliusDeBerryJr

This is so far the best exploration of the AN-X synth engine I've come across. I've been thinking about selling off most of my gear to consolidate to just a Montage, but hesitate because the sounds I've heard have either been generic or a little thin. This truly does sound massive. Nicely done!

Great sound and playing. Just the right mood for that excellent AN-X Performance. You definitely got a handle on this beast. I’m slowly getting up to speed with my M8x. Every time I sit down to play I’m floored by its depth of sonic capabilities. Thanks for sharing.

I've had my m8x for over a month now, and I still tremble a bit inside when I approach it. The potential of this instrument is unparalleled in my experience. The learning curve is steep -- however, the more I learn, the more impressed I am with how thoughtfully (and kinda miraculously) this keyboard is designed. My only "complaint" is that the onboard pianos sound a bit "thin" and "digital" to me (especially in the octave above middle C). However, for $25-$30, you can add The ITB SteinD and/or Italian Grand Pianos, both of which are pre-formatted for the Montage, and both of which, surprisingly (and IMO), beat the pants off the stock pianos on the Montage (deeper midrange, greater dynamics AND way better "string resonance" emulation...).

AWM+AN-X all that is left is FDSP and VL and we've got ourselves a modern EX-5 with modern hardware, maybe in 2024/2025 ;-)

@@theaudioeng The EX5 does an amazing job as a midi controller. 3 Wheels. Ribbon strip. 5 knobs. The keyboard is very easy to play on. Aftertouch is a little too sensitive.

Great sound. I just can’t wait to try this keyboard. How is the action? Is it comparable to anything else? Sound like a keyboard where you close your eyes and just explore and enjoy.

Hi there! This is the first graded hammer action keyboard with poly-aftertouch that I've ever tried, so I can't really compare it to anything else. That said, I find it a very pleasant keybed to play on. The keys offer a good but not-too-excessive degree of resistance, and it does feel very natural to lean into the sounds, especially brassy pad-like patches like the one I made for this video. That said, it may be a bit challenging to play faster synth lines that might usually fare better with a semi-weighted keyboard, as the resistance does take getting used to.

If compared to OG montage 8, are the keys heavier on play or more light?

The pads are too digital and clean, not organic. The basses have no body. The acoustic pianos are impressive. The drums are mediocre as well as the imitation of analog sounds, they lack the real analog dirt, this Yamaha doesn't have it, I think the last Yamaha that had that real analog 'feel' was the EX5.

maybe its me, but i never liked my AN1x. The "analog feel" sounded boxy and muddy for me. Good for basses, but keep a hardaware synth only for bass is waste of money and space. Ableton stock synths worked better for me. Sold it.
@Venatt1
@Venatt1 9 месяцев назад
@@user-mm7do3jt5v keep in mind that when ANX1 came out the analog emulations were not that great, however if you're looing for analog buy a Moog or a Sequential, there's tons of options. For me Yamaha Montage M simply blows away any Korg and any Roland that's out there in the same segment, in this case I'm talking about Nautilous and Phantom as well the the Kurzweil K2700.
