I've owned both keyboards. Both are about equal when it comes to sounds, one shining here, another there. What I had trouble with was Yamaha's UI. Very difficult to work with. Ended up selling it and buying the Roland. If you are a single instrument guy and dedicate yourself completely to that one instrument then you can work past the UI in the Yamaha and eventually master it. But if you have multiple instruments go with the Roland as it has an easier learning curve.
@bluerabbit7245
@bluerabbit7245 Год назад
Totally agree. I own both also and the Roland is by far the easier to work with. I think the piano is better on the Yamaha but, like the comment above says, they both shine in different areas. I'd re-iterate the very good bit of advice from charlessharpe above, either stick with the Yamaha and learn the UI properly or if you don't spend your whole time with just one keyboard go for the Roland. Much easier to pick up.

I like the look and feel of the Yamaha. It's got a certain character. The sounds are less glossy on the Yamaha and a tad brighter on the Roland but more processed sp my preference is the Yamaha. It would look hot in anyone's studio.

Yamaha's stock pianos, and Electric Pianos have always been the best. Now I know it's about preference when it comes to Roland, and Yamaha. But I've been playing keyboards for about 13 years now and Roland's pianos has never been able to measure up to Yamahas pianos.

Synth leads of the MOXF are great, though, I normally end up building my own ones. On the other hand electric pianos of the MOXF look like the exact same samples of the first series of the Motif (of 2002 - I had one for many years). As usual like a lot Roland grand piano. They both look like very good instruments for the price range. I tried an FA08 once, they are VERY different for what concerns the functionalities, the sequencer and the onboard sampler are impressive on the FA08. Don't know about the MOXF. I found it very ergonomic. That small display has an insane resolution. It fits much more information than the one of the MOXF.

I had the original Motif, Motif ES, and now the Motif XF. Trust me, the electric pianos are miles better than the original. The effects processor in the Motif XF/MoXF alone puts these electric pianos in a class by themselves over the original Motif.

Ok... Let's get into this... :-) These reviews should do more than play patches/programmes - afterall it's not 1980.. Take us through the combination options - are the fx available per single sound or is it a handful of fx shared across 1 to ## Patches? Btw - both synths are excellent sound tools, what separates them is all the other features that one expects from a hardware synth "workstation".
@MMWechsler
@MMWechsler 9 лет назад
Hearing both in a music store, I found the sound quite different than recorded here, even though it's done extremely well. I though the pianos on the MOXF6 were passable, not great. But the FA06 really sounded weak. Both suffered in the mid range, having that synthetic sound of a synth trying hard to mimic a piano but coming up short - like those cheap Casio keyboards when they first came out. The FA06 organs is where the unit really shined, as you can hear here. Deep and rich, great leslie, Hammond B3 but the MOXF6 had a decent showing. Overall I didn't find the Roland having a lot of usable gig sounds, e.g. snap electric bass (couldn't even find a preset.) Both are certainly excellent machines and won't put you in pangs of major regret like buying synths many years ago where differences were dramatic. But I think that if piano is important, the MOXF6 is easily the better of the two. Also the MOXF6 had a more diverse amount of usable sounds and the FA06 looks and feels toyish, although I liked the keyboard much better (it's totally different than the FA08 here.) Fantastic video and great chops shows off the differences.

I liked both keyboards very much. I own and play both Yamaha & Roland. I preferred the Yamaha over the Roland even tho' I thought FA's acoustic piano was slightly better than the Yam on this machine. I use the MOXF6 at gigs. I like the light weight, easy presets and performances. Roland has a better viewing screen, Yamaha's is a bit too small. Yamaha's Hammond organ patches and elec. pianos are slightly better and brighter than the Roland's on these units. I love Yamaha's brass settings and the 80's brass stuff. String patches and elec. guitar are about equal on both. Roland has slightly better wild "synthy" sounds, especially if you're doing 80's material. Yamaha has better natural orchestral instrument sounds like trumpet, sax, violin, cello, harp, oboe, etc.... Yamaha wins the duel.....but only by a nose.

These are both great keyboards and well worth the money. The Yamaha is perfect for church and I'm sure it excels at jazz and mellow pop, but I have the Roland FA-08 and can tell you that the sounds in person are jaw-droppingly beautiful. They are mostly skewed towards classic Roland synth sounds that just sound incredibly smooth. I have no regrets and prefer the Roland but would be perfectly happy with either one.

MIsleading it's not a Roland FA06, it's an FA08. not a fair comparrison. The Yamaha has a 61 key synth keyboard and the FA08 has an 88 note weighted keyboard which means the velocity sensitivity, and the way it's played and therefore the way it sounds is going to be completely different. Compare the MOXF6 and and FA06 and it would be a fair test.
@aworshipperscry87

Its funny you say that cause I've always felt that 61 key pianos are different than the full 88 key pianos. That's the reason why I prefer 88 key keyboards. You can only compare if you controle them by the same keybed (midi controller) I have a Yamaha MOX6, a Korg Krome and an Roland Integra 7 in the attic studio. All 3 are played trough my old and trusty Roland FP8 with the real hammers inside. This comes closest to a real Grand acoustic piano so only then you can really compare the different sounds. I also have a Yamaha P-155 piano in the living room. I adore the sounds but never felt comfortable with the keybed. That same P-155 piano sounds completely different and more lively when I play it through the old FP8 because the FP-8 keybed is much more responsive to every emotion I put in the keys.

The strings on it sound extremely bad and cheesy other sounds like the Piano's sound great. Biggest feature of the Yamaha is the ability to load custom samples to replace the cheesy stock sounds that are yester year. I played with the Moxf and it's a good entry to mid level keyboard. I'm reading comments and getting a strong feeling that the pro Yamaha comments are most likely from people who already like Yamaha units to begin with. I am a longtime fan and user of yamaha from the S-80 to the current Motif while dismissing the Roland's for a decade now But...I've played the Roland and thevyamaha in this video and the Roland has a lot more depth and a certain "finish". The integra is an amazing piece of hardware and Roland is definitely playing catch up since their restructuring of management. Kronos is still the tech leader on many fronts but Roland is catching up.

I think both are monsters and are worthy in their own right! For what I got in years past at 1,800 dollars did not even compare to what's under the hood now. The capabilities are endless. And still at 1,800 bucks for the eighty eight keyboard! I like the simplicity and versatility of the roland and the bigger screen. Doesn't yamaha realize that the bigger screen is a super great selling feature for those of us who can't see that well and/or for those who even can? It's like the big screen tvs are getting bigger and better and cheaper so would someone shed some light please? Especially in poorly lit venues.Why would they cut back there? Anyway I do like most of their patches .If roland sounds as good as far as pianos and strings for instance they have my vote. I'll have to test drive them both.

im very upst with the fact that roland didnt let you sample a sound and use it for playing and also they didnt add sliding knobs and no sound stretch.. this makes the kronos X my favorite workstation

I'm seriously considering the Roland plus the pads are nice but they could have included speakers on the 2 blank spaces at each end. Plus I like the joystick over the mod wheel. The MOXF is more expensive then the Roland.

The FA-08 has fantastic keyboard feel. I just can't take that plastic enclosure and overall aesthetics. What happened to the industrial design nowadays? Keyboard instruments used to be sleek and beautiful in about between 1983-1991.

well i am 51 years old and when i was 15 i carried a Fender Rhodes....that sound great but just one sound........and 150 pounds without the amp.........hey i dont care about the plastic i use the keyboard to gig and make money....not to make an altar and look a it all day.

Juan Roca Well, when I was 17, I only wanted the latest and greatest, and that was Roland D-70 that the time. And even though I was into latest and "greatest", I was still intrigued by the D-50 and the DX-seriies from Yamaha. Also, I liked the A-series and RD-series from Roland, I'm talking the second half of the '80s. These were THE instruments, as well as the KX-series from Yamaha. If you pay me lots of money, I will play the FA-series Roland, no problem. If not, I will go with what I like.

Ok at my time i did wanted the latest,and i did.......is good to a musician to be always upgrade..to what is going on on the industry...that way keep your musician legacy......i know a couple of friends that still in the past whit Korg M1 and Roland Xp...... almost no body call them to gig.....you need tha latest like u said broo.
@dvamateur
@dvamateur 10 лет назад
Juan Roca Oh, I'd love to have Korg M1, but it's close to impossible to find a clean one. Most of them on eBay are overpriced and very beaten up. I am a hobbyist obviously, so I am looking more for the "altar" thing than utility. But I agree, that if you are a gigging musician or session player, you need to have something like Motif XF and a laptop full of soft synths maybe. Same like in the '80s one needed have an Emulator II and DX7 to be called to a gig. In a way, it's much cheaper nowadays. Emulator II was like $10,000 back then.

You can't compare these two synths. The Roland has 2000+ sounds, plus expansion for free. My new FA has 2700 sound patches. The Yamaha MOX has 1152. That's it.
@1881Gordon
@1881Gordon 2 года назад
Sorry, but I disagree. Admittedly the better comparison would have been the MOXF6 VS the FA06 but still, the Price point at the time was/is similar. The MOXF Range allows you to expand up to 2GB So number of sounds available is not an issue... That aside (IMO) the main things keyboardist will want to know are What is the keybed like? What are UI screens, controls and sequencers like? What are the Grand, Acoustic, Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Organ, Orchestral, Brass, Pad, Strings, woodwind, drums and weird sound FX like? I have both and for certain sounds I reckon the Yamaha kills the Roland with ease (and definitely vice versa). Bottom line, both have an impressive number of sounds available to them, but more doesn't necessarily equal better (IMO).
@hillock10
@hillock10 2 года назад
@@1881Gordon I also have a Yamaha keyboard arranger. The sounds are disappointing: not that nay and little expansion capability. That is why I am happy with my Roland, thousands of sound patches, everything I need. My next keyboard will be the Roland XM: 4000 patches and huge polyphony.

There are not romplers, they are full synthesizers....so what about the synthesis, how deep does it go? True synth buyers don't by for the presets, we buy for the sound design capabilities. What is the strength of one over the other?
@paulmapp8306
@paulmapp8306 6 лет назад
Id agree there - and the Roland has the SNS engine - you can build va synth patches from the basic wave form up - though its more limited than some dedicated analogue/VA synths. This is THE biggest selling point for me of the FA over the Yam. I dont need a dedicated rompler - I need a proper synth engine with some rompler sounds available as well. The Roland does that - the Yam doesnt.
