The gears problem you’ve highlighted is caused by not putting enough pressure on your upshifts. All bikes will do this, try quick shifting a bike without a quick shifter. You just need to be firmer and make sure you take your foot away from the lever also to let it go fully back. The quick shifter being so good on these makes us get a little sloppy with our changes. I’ve had a few bikes with quick shifters and my mt09 is by far the best, far better than my Ninja 1000 sx that I also have at the mo. Great video reviews you do, enjoy them immensely.

Spot on comment... you have to put quite a bit of upward pressure and you HAVE to release the pressure 100% as well... I had this problem in my racing days, we called it lazy foot syndrome.

I was just about to write the same thing, this was also happening with my gen2 MT-09 quickshifter, you just have to be a bit more firm with it and never rest your foot there (especially when 1st-2nd gears are involved). Yamaha also does not recommend using the QSS for 1st gear (neither downshifting nor upshifting from it, only for gears 2-6, since the gap is bigger between 1st and second and it will not be as succesful and as smooth, might even damage the gearbox if done too often).

I heard you have to kind of grab and release it purposely. Also just learned you shouldn’t use it between gear one and two at all.
@exothermal.sprocket

Wonder if people would be better suited to raise the lever position somewhat so you're more likely to release the lever fully from your boot, also to be a little more conscious of the fact you have to bump your foot upward to shift... If it is possible to flip the shift shaft link and go GP-shift (one-up, the rest down) and use a toe press to advance gears instead of shin muscles.

Great vid as always Eddie 👌 Picked up my mt09sp last month, just had its first service and loving it. Noticed the indicator had come out after a few days too, thought I had just nudged it, bit fiddly to get back in but all sorted. Funny to hear its a thing though and I'm not the only one!

Hi Eddie like you I had a few issues with the quick shifter. I adjusted my gear lever slightly so that it returned to a more natural position for my foot and that seemed to cure it. The only other problem I had was wearing out the gear lever rubber! But that's due to the hard plastic pad on my boots, only a fiver for a new one! 4500 miles on my sp now, absolutely love it, I have switched to Metzler m9rr tyres as the s22 tyres wore out really quickly. The Metzler's are really good. Mine is in this week for a Dyno tune as Woolwich racing have cracked the ECU! Happy daze more power I find it runs very lean when it's hot! Common problem with euro 5 bikes and it has stalled occasionally. Great channel. I will update with my power figures all on a standard exhaust because I like it. Cheers Tony

I have had it drop into neutral but it hasn't happed for a the last 3 weeks now. I love the comfort seat I can ride 3+hours and I'm all good. But I LOVE MY SP also it in my first big bike and I have done 3000 miles now. Good review mate.

Hey Eddie, Thanks for the content. It helped me to make the decision to buy my new "23" MT-09-SP which I have been quite enjoying as I near my 600 mile service interval here in California. You mentioned a quick shifter / shifting issue in your 600 mile Vlog. I almost got into serious trouble yesterday because I was making a pass which would otherwise have been an easy one but the bike stuck in third gear and would not shift up to forth. I tired 2 times before going for the clutch and then it still would not budge. Being almost at 600 miles and had just made the decision to push it up to 7K RPMs for the first time but I was forced to take it up to 9,500 RPMS to make it around the slower traffic in time to beat the oncoming traffic because it would not go into 4th. 6 attempts to shift at or above 7K RPM , with and without the clutch were all unsuccessful. I finally have to slow down to the point that I could downshift first before going back up again. For some reason it doesn't like up-shifting from 3rd or 4th or 4th to 5th at mid to high RPMs. You don't mention the issues here in this 1500 mile Vlog. Have you figured out what was going on and how to remedy the issue?? This is dangerous as hell and now that I'm about to do my first service and go beyond the low RMP break-in period, I need to figure this issue out. HELP??

I ride the exact same bike. To start with, I had similar problem with the gear popping to neutral. BUT, I am riding very hard and within 6000 km I changed the tires S22 3 times. 2K km each set. At about 5 K km the problem with missing gear stopped. What I do though when up shifting from 1st to 2nd I always engage the clutch. I did a lot of mods on my bike and weights 180 kilos fully fuelled, 169 empty of fuel. I may do a video of the mods. Cosmetic and more serious like Woolich Racing full kit, Akrapovic racing full exhaust DNA filter... The bike is ultra fast and easily mix with bigger bikes in the twisty. In my case most of the time I am ahead but may be my friends are slow 🤣🤣🤣 My bigger proble so far is to keep the front wheel on the ground. It is very powerful after all those mods. The biggest plus is that the bike is small and agile and very stable. I trust the front 100%

Ive swapped my indicators out before having a single mile on the bike (my area uses lots of salt on the roads during winter) but it was my understanding that they are designed to pop out of the sockets when they are hit to avoid breaking in the event of a drop or maybe bumping it with your leg while getting on. For the QS i know you need to be deliberate with your shifts and above 2200 rpm if im not mistaken. Also cant be used to go into neutral up or down so maybe the bike thinks your either trying to go to neutral or just not enough pressure.

Hi ,must agree with you on the few problems you have had with your gear shifting and the gearbox in general, I too have experience similar problems with my new mto9, mentioned it to my dealer on its first service and they said it's working fine and all is good with the clutch, gearbox and quick shifter so I'll have to see what happens with it in the future, hopefully it will bed itself in when I have more miles on it ,otherwise I'm delighted with my choice and really enjoying the bike 🏍, great video mate 😀

You are not shifting correctly if you are having problems with it. You are either using it at revs when you aren’t supposed to be shifting, you have your shifter in a suboptimal position for your foot and need to adjust it, or you aren’t shifting hard or quick enough with your foot

Not sure if i could be one of the oldest to have one of these at 66, i've had bikes for 50 years and this is one of the best i've owned, i have had both front indicators pop out, googled it and someone explained how to put them back which worked fine, no problems with the gearbox, this was my first with a quick shifter, how did i manage before? one reason i chose this bike was the riding position and high bars, nothing but pain on a sports bike so i thought that was it for me, then i tested this bike, i quickly signed up for one, but you don't have to be an old git to enjoy this bike, cruise control and 60+ to the gallon comes in handy.

@admireinspire

Someone mentioned the shifter has to see the engine under throttle to shift up and a lot of people experience the miss shifts while at redline. The hypothesis is that the engine at redline is cycling on and off throttle so if you happen to try to shift while it's on that split second off throttle part of the cycle it won't shift. I haven't heard anything about downshifts however. Tuners are upping the redline a little not for more power but for more room before redline for easier shifts they also are making changes to fueling that many people say have helped their shifts feel better as well. I'm using vcyclenut might be worth a shot to get it dynod or at least flashed.

I lost hours with my 2021 09SP to fine tuning the gear position. But I found out than when you put more than 1 gear, with strong acceleration, my leg wants to grab the bike and it’s easy to not drop the feet as much as needed to completely go the neutral shift position, then shifting again you are still in previous gear , the quick shift senses that you asked for another gear but mechanically the gearbox is not prepared for next gear. This never happens on my 2019 S1000RR, I compared both bikes shift extension and the MT is quite longer unfortunately. I don’t have problems with down shifting and 1st. I only think the auto-blip to 1st could sometimes be a bit more gentle.
@love4boost
@love4boost 2 года назад
One issue is the rpm. I believe above 10.3k there’s a failsafe that locks out the quick shifter. Other is just not enough pressure. I try to just slightly roll off and hit it again and it’ll go into gear. Sometimes it just straight up says no. I plan on getting the Puig screen when they release it. It looks like a screen that could’ve come stock. I think I’m either getting used to how the wheel comes up and subconsciously rolling on the throttle in a way to prevent it or I’m leaning too far forward in preparation for it. I keep everything at 1 and it doesn’t come up as much as it did in the first 1k miles. The most I’ve spent on a tank of gas is $12 USD with the gas light on. That was at a gas station way more expensive than anywhere I’d normally go. I went there to not get stuck. I really have no complaints about the bike aside from waiting for parts to come available which isn’t the bikes fault.

Well, it's my first bike with a quick shifter. If I'm daydreaming & riding on auto pilot I sometimes screw up my shifting.. as in I'm not engaging hard enough. But I blame it on my daydreaming not the quickshifter. I have a problem with my neck, that radiates down to my forearms. The quickshifter is a blessing for me because of this. I've gone a bit Mod Crazy on my bike 🤭 I removed my indicators because of their floppy-ness. I put some TST Flush mounts & since removed those. 🤦‍♀️ I am giving my flush mounts away if anyone wants them. 🍻 if I fill up after putting 150 miles on the tank it cost me around $12. Premium fuel is around $4.80‐$5.05 in Southern California.

I've read all the comments about the indicators but nobody has actually said this is something that Yamaha should address. It's poor design. If you look around a bike meet, half of modern Yamaha's have them hanging out! Dealerships are the same. As regards the quickshifter, mine improved drastically after about 3k miles, and a more deliberate action helps. Really good review.

Hi Eddie, I’ve done 1200 miles on my SP but haven’t had any of the problems you’ve had, however I don’t try and use the quickshift to drop into first from speed and, to be honest, I don’t know of any bikes that reliably shift between 1st and 2nd w/o using the clutch and I rarely corner in first gear. I think that I’ve only ever missed one gear change on my bike since I’ve had it and I put that down to fat feet and / or user error 😉. If you’re looking for a good screen for the MT-09 SP I can recommend the new MRA model, I think it’s good looking and it does a good job for me. I haven’t lost my indicators yet either, but I did have them swapped for the accessory model led indicators, shorter and fatter, at purchase. Ride safe!

I don't underdand why you would risk taking the bends you demonstrated in first gear. There's always the risk of going into neutral, which is scary as hell due to no control for a sec or 2. You can power out in second with far less stress on the engine and rider. I only use first when starting off, never going into tight corners. With my quickshifter, I have enough trouble with false neutrals without playing Russian roulette hoping to engage first from second gear.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket Год назад
Wonder if the jump from 1st to 2nd across neutral is harder on the transmission than using conventional clutching and then auto-shifting from 2nd-onward. Perhaps Yamaha programmed a longer delay to complete that jump than it does between the other gears.

So, the main reason why you are able to knock out those turn signals so easily by just accidently hitting them is actually a safety feature for them. If they were hinged in their spot and you would accidently hit them, you would instead break them, which would end up being costly. Them popping out actually saves you a lot of money in many cases, better to have to put it back than to have to change it. This functionality has saved my turn signals twice in two different slides, so it helped a lot keeping down the costs of low-siding while riding a bit too hard, heh.

@@EddieSetGo I certainly will; 72hp compare to 117hp is a bit of a jump, especially on how it's delivered. I remember the first time I pinned the throttle on a Honda CB650R, good job I was holding on! I like the way Yamaha sorted the handling out with the new frame, a new swing arm, and by dropping the steering head by 50mm. I'm just wondering what the new MY2022 SP version will be like; a bigger TFT would be nice. The Tenere 700 is a great bike; I like the riding position, its road presence, and it's very practicable, but it's tall, a bit top-heavy, and has a high centre of gravity. The suspension is also a bit soft, due to anti-squat, and the high counter shaft. My favourite bike is still a light-weight naked; so an MT-09 SP, with a screen and a rear rack, will suit my needs just fine. I noticed the indicator inserts are the same as the ones on the Tenere 700, they seem to be out of the Yamaha parts box, and used on many models. They don't jump out on the Tenere, but I changed mine for some LED scrolling ones. I had to order some indicator inserts, and then I fettled some tear shaped aluminium back brackets to get them fit them securely. They look great, they go through a fancy start-up routine, then act as very bright daylight running lights, and extra stop lights on the rear. They'll be going on my SP when I finally get hold of one. I bought my bike new, it doesn't have a quick-shifter, but it jumped out of 2nd gear once or twice at slow speed, but it seems to have settled down now and has been excellent. Can't wait to get back on a naked with 17" wheels!

I’ve had my 21 09SP for 3 months and done nearly 5000 miles on it and I too occasionally had the same problem with up shifts. It’s the third bike I’ve owned with a quick shifter and blipper so I am used to using them and it’s not user error. I found mine got a lot better after about 3000 miles. I don’t have the problem you have with downshifts but I don’t go into or from 1st with the quick shifter. I never get neck ache on mine either even on day long trips - maybe that’s due to your helmet or maybe for me being short helps? I’ve had lots of bikes and really rate the 21 09 it’s a great bike.

I actually turned the quick shifter off and rode around without it for a while. It was then that I realised that it was actually just the gearbox itself that was the problem and later I learned that the problem is the lever not returning to the original position on it's own after the shift.

Hi there Eddie, love your vids and am a new MT 09 owner ( Storm Fluo ) . The bike is awesome and is my first bike with a quick shifter. The thing I noticed with the quick shifter was I was down shifting without slowing the bike down with the brakes first, as the shifter works so well , but this is not good. The engine braking should be done by rolling off the throttle and not by down shifting. I have quickly become used to it now and it works brilliantly. My daily riding includes many tight hairpins all of which I take in 3rd , sometimes 2nd but never 1st and I think quick shifting down to first at speed in order to slow the bike down might not be great for the gearbox, quick shifter or safety. 1st on this bike seems to be for moving off or very slow town work. Anyway, great content, keep ‘em coming and what jacket are you wearing in this vid ? Cheers

Not sure about if your throttle position was appropriate to accommodate that particular 3rd to 4th shift as mines been butter smooth shifting up from 2nd while on throttle.I have however found N when attempting to shift from 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration. Im willing to bet money its 100% a lack of authority on my part while shifting. 21 09sp btw.

in my monster i have seen differences which i could only link to chain tension as well. in addition always check your clutch tension adjustment which is the number one check i would do. Lastly have a good look on how your input is when you change gears cause that might just be up to you not switching gears decisively enough (others also noted) or maybe something that will just improve in time. No matter what i would start with the mentioned checks anyway. Good luck

Pull indicator through gap, as you do remove the rubber boot. With indicator out and dangling, pull rubber boot out as well and fit it back to indicator. Now fit indicator back in to housing, wedging each of the bits through. It’s a 60 second job

Just for anyone who doesn’t know, only because I recently discovered it, you shouldn’t use the quick shifter between first and second gear up or down or it can lead to long-term damage. Not made for that apparently. In the manual. Great video man

edit: Actually page 4-6 of the manual says no such thing. Nor does section 7-3. Old: That's pretty dumb for yamaha to do though. The ECU knows what gear you're in. It can easily not respond to the quick shifter when you're in first shifting up or 2nd shifting down. If Yamaha don't want you doing it they can control it in firmware with no effort at all.

Help? I'm about to do my first track day in my 2023 MT-09-SP and I'm trying to figure out if I can scroll back through all of the lap times that I might log in a 10 lap session , before shutting down the bike , or if I have to take note of those times while I'm riding and before I log the next one. The owners manual does not go into detail and I can't seem to figure out how to scroll back through times but rather can only see the prior lap while on the current lap. This will be distracting while riding if I want to know what my actual times are. Surely there must be a temporary memory of all of the the laps in a session? Help?

Hi I have had the same problem with the indicators falling out also when you change up with the quick shift make sure you go into the settings and set the quick shifter to the highest rpm or it won’t let you change gear once you pass that rpm the other thing I have never hear of anyone changing down to first in a bend you must be going to slow also there is a good chance of smashing that gear box going into first

@Geo_Okami
@Geo_Okami 2 года назад
By design quickshifter is meant for spirited shifting, no slow and lazy movements on gear pedal..Yamaha does not recommend using quickshifter from 1-2 or downbliper from 2-1 coz it's common sense that between gears it's longer travel in gearbox coz of the neutral. Downshifts needs to be fast and firm on gear lever, and you need to make sure to take off your boot from the lever every time you downshift.. Upshifting is is same but in reverse, open throttle quick and firm press up, boot off and all works like charm

you actually only put 9,74 Litres into the bike and not 12...that was the price. At roughly 120 miles (116) ridden and and about 10 litres filled into the bike, the fuel consumption is almost exactly 5L per 100km. which is excellent for a bike with 120hp.

The quick shifter is meant to be used from 2nd gear upwards. Between gear 1 and 2 the clutch should be used. The reason for this is that there is Neutral (N) between them and there is chance of a false Neutral (N) when upshifting. Also the shifting should be firm otherwise the gear may not select. The indicators are designed to pop out when knocked rather than breaking off, saves you money in the long term.

2021 MT-09 SP here - I've had similar issues with the down-blipper and I tried riding with it switched off for a month. Unfortunately the issue persisted even with the downshifter off. I found out that I just have to make more decisive - longer travel - moves on the shifter lever. It's my first bike with a quckshifter and I have a question - do you HAVE to roll off the throttle to downshift? It seem like the shifter lever is locked if I don't fully roll off.
