The MU15 is a battery powered XG / GM module from 1998. I recorded this demo in three stereo tracks, one after the other, on my ZOOM R20. There's an amp sim from the R20 applied to the lead sound and a compressor on the master track, other than that, no additional external effects.

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)

Here's a thing, Yamaha's chorus effect (even in their first digital synths from the late 80s) has never been the subject of much praise (at least not that I'm aware of). But listen to it closely, it's incredible. It turns a bland saw wave into a three-dimensional experience.

No, plenty of people know about /discuss Yamaha's "Symphonic" effect algorithm. What you hear depends on where, and with whom, you "hang out"!

I love this kind of good old xg synthesizers...I use them since 1996.. 😊 I' m using logic and I've built some environments for the effective use of xg, with midi and sysex automation... If you own synths like CS1x, or the QS300, you can dive very deep in their sound structure. 😊

Thanks for watching - and many of these sound modules are really cheap! People only remember "yeah they have 128 standard sounds that are absolutely horrible by today's standards"

I got one of these last year from Japan for $125. I love the sounds and it is multitimbral! I use Digitakt to sequence and add effects. Legendary device.

Thanks for watching! The "synth stuff" here sounds superb. I often see the last XG module they ever made, the MU2000, on ebay, and they seem to be exclusive to Japan. I really want to buy one because I want to know what the peak of GM desktop modules looked / sounded like, but I'm a little bit scared of customs taxes and other import fees. ;-)

@@mr_floydst Have you considered a CBX-K1 XG? It's the mini keys 3 octave CBX-K1 MIDI controller, with a built in XG synth. I own a few of the non-XG CBX-K1 keyboards. They both go reasonably cheaply, for what they are. The keybed isn't quite as good as a Reface, but they're not bad, and the MOD wheel is assignable, not fixed on CC1... at least it is on the MIDI controller version. They come up on ebay fairly often.

The CBX-K1XG is interesting (I have one). I think its internal synth is at roughly the same level of capability as the MU15. The controller functions are really extensive, and with the audio input it's actually very convenient for use with an external MIDI module also. It's a shame an external device (realistically, a computer) is needed to control the effect settings though.
@doordedeur
@doordedeur Месяц назад
As long as you don't want to use realistic acoustic instruments, the ancient Yamaha XG-chip delivers all the needs for synth sounds.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
Agreed! (Some of the "realistic" instruments can sound great in their own way if you do not use them as what they are supposed to be used for ;-) )

The XG stuff could sound great with decent programming, this cover is pretty accurate: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5YZ6_sn8Uh8.html

They could give these old synths from 30 years ago a new case designed by Teenage Engineering and a cool logo and I'd probably buy one for $850 no questions asked…

I don't think the MU15 is a must-own, so you most likely made the right decision there. But the synth stuff on those XG boxes often sounds spectacular if you don't use it in the way it's flagged (e.g. don't use the bass patches for bass. Use them for pads or plucks instead).

Have you ever worked with a DM48 or DM48X, they are electronic harmonicas the latter being Bluetooth enabled. Being an harmonica player, I like my DM48X very much. They need a Synth to make music, I use an IPad or Android phone to play mine.

how do the sounds compare to something like the QY models? is the MU15 more or less a QY70/100 with more polyphony and no sequencing?
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
One could say so, I guess. It's like a QY70 without the sequencer. Also, the MU15 doesn't have all the "variation" effects the QY70 / 100 has. So if you already own one of those, you don't really get additional value from this box.
@user-lw4nt5uc3p

What is different about the QY series and the MU? Specifically the QY70 and QY100 and the MU15?
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
The MU lacks the sequencer and some "variation" effects, sound-wise, they're pretty same-y. If you already own one of the QYs, you won't need this box (unless you need more polyphony)
