Yamaha outboard HPDI idle. How to check why outboard is not idling/performing correctly with no power to plain.
Spark plug firing test and coil firing test. Cylinders not firing. dead cylinders.

Hi great vid and thanks for showing how to test the coils. In my manual for my OX66 1999 250, it also says to test the wire harness, CDI output peak voltage, charge coil peak voltage and pulser coil output peak voltage. My issue is low to no ignition spark. Is a multimeter good to test the other things. Though the manual is great, these things are a bit confusing. I don't want to order new coils and realize it could be the pulser coil as well.

With the engine running if you take one plug wire at a time and pull it off if that's cylinder is not firing there would be no change in the engine if it is firing and you pull it off the engine Will miss fire you don't have to buy special equipment to test to see if it's firing or not

Would have been nice to see the spark plug boot test for resistance also. Have been trying to figure this out and seems what I have found is you unscrew the cap from the wire, test resistance should be between 4k-6k ohms.

Boot alone will be around 3-6ohms

What he did what a complete test, coil- wire-boot will add up to around 15-17k ohms

I have a question I have a 150 hpdi I can get about 2500 rpm’s then it’s basically just bogs and stalls out and dies or if I let off it continues to run it did have a shutter in it like it had a miss I did not know 2 and 3 did not run in idle so that answered my question why it would run so well at that time 2 and 3 were wet and had carbon build up they have new spark plugs in them I’m gonna check coils next but the 2 and 3 plugs have gas on them which means it’s not burning off all the gas or is to rich. What are your thoughts?

Hello. These engines run on 4 cylinder in neutral and 6 when in gear. This operation is done by a shift switch. Check out my video on this subject. If the switch is defective this will happen as it will run on 4 cylinders and only give you 2500 rpms. This will cause the wet plugs as you mentioned because 2 cylinders are not firing. These cylinders not firing are 2 and 3. (1, 4 . 5 and 6 are firing ) It is an easy fix. Please let us know if you fixed it. We love to hear success stories!

Hi, I got the same motor like you. It ran fine before I replaced the high pressure fuel hose. Right now it cranked but don’t want to run. Do you have any idea? I did check the coil and spark. Everything works fine.

Any idea what can be blowing the 20amp ecu/fuel pump/ coil fuse on a 2001 150hpdi ? I’ve already replaced the low pressure pumps that were bad, the medium pressure electric fuel pump in the vst ( mechanic said this was the cause of the fuse blowing ) after changing the vst fuel pump now it’s still blowing the fuse but as soon as you turn on the ignition.

Yep ! Was a cable leading to the coils that was bare , quick fix after finding it.

You can check for spark with the tool between the coil and spark without removing.

Hi yes I realize that , thanks for the nice video,you are doing a great service to all the 200 HPDI owners out there . Ohms testing is what I am referring to . Testing while bolted to the engine my coils read 2.6 to 3 , however there’s no reading from the coil to inside the spark plug cap ,and I was very careful to make proper contact . Here’s the whole story, I went on a short trip both engines ran flawlessly,after anchoring for an hour only one would run the other one would run for 5 seconds and shut down. A few weeks ago I had changed all the visible fuel filters so I figured it was a spark problem. Yesterday I got them both started and they ran flawlessly. Do you have any idea of what caused the malfunction? Thanks for your time.

@@edwardburrowes4243 Wow! When I come across this issue I look for something loose or not tighten enough as my first troublshooting step. Also for a leak in a hose or faulty wire or connection. Jeep us posted if you find something.
