YAMAHA PSR SX900 TUTORIAL - Tour of the front panel controls 

Hello Woody, I shall be taking delivery of o PSR SXJ900 today. This is the first time I have purchased a keyboard instrumen since I owned an antique upright piano 30 years ago. Apart from a when I bought and lived in a deconsecrated church, which came replete with an 1880 London made three panel pipe organ with 21 stops & floor pedals. The air came from a huge old electric air pump in the crypt (which also served as a bathroom and a self contained flat had a separate street entrance (very sloping block of land), I used to play a lot of somewhat eclectic music on a fLes Paul electric, or a 12 string Horner acoustic guitar with electronic pickup & equaliser built in in. I am hoping that this PSR SX900 will allow me to continue to enjoy playing and creating music, given that being a septuagenarian, My are suffering from the effects of arthritis & I can no longer shape chords properly, let alone make snappy changes, let alone play finger style guitar.. My hands are still good enough for playing blues harp or keyboards, so I hope I have done the right thing.

The SX900 is amazingly similar to my Korg MicroArranger in features and sound. The SX900 has a microphone input and vocal processing that I don't but that is about it. Since I paid $500.00 for my Korg I am feeling very fortunate. I have MIDI cabled my 88key piano into my Korg and now have the only arranger in the world with a 88 weighted key keyboard.

Not a very good and deep touchscreen in my option. Otherwise a very nice keyboard. Have fine and cosy holidays Woody . Thanks for your always lively and interesting video’s !

Woody, thanks for delving into this in depth! As a beginner keyboard player, there are a lot of features that I need explained, and you do a great job. So, a very general question regarding playing technique, or strategy when playing an Arranger vs a Piano --- (I inherited a very old Roland E-20 LOL) I have a "Memory" key, which enables holding the last chord played, until you play the next one. That seems like it might be useful, if you need to hit the buttons above to change variation, etc. and not stop the chord from playing. Or, would you think it's better to just leave that feature off, and try to get faster at hitting those other buttons? I've noticed on a lot of RU-vid videos, it looks like a lot of players do use that feature, but what would be your suggestion? Can you demo some tips and tricks that show how to play the Arranger's keyboard and buttons fluently? Thanks!

I have a recording studio with Cubase Pro 10 and Ableton live suite, Omnisphere etc. I like the keyboard but I am not sure if I really need it. Thank you for your video is very well explained.

Being a senior, I'm more partial to traditional styles and voices and in particular smooth and sweet harmonies or even folk and country style. It would seem that the latest PSR has catered more to those who identify with the contemporary scene. I enjoy Southern Gospel music and I noticed where there was a "southern gospel" style on the sx900. However, it turned out to be more tuned to Black Gospel. The Gaithers are much more representative of true southern gospel music. Much of my public performance is associated with Nursing Homes and Special Care facilities. You know the kind of music they prefer. (Me too! A wide cross section but not contemporary!)

I am having a hard time transferring my midifiles to the PSR-SX700. Can you demonstrate that?

Hi, when I select a style, the psr x900 selects 4 voices to use with otr. Sometimes I don’t like these voices. How can I change them and edit in my own voices sounds? Or is it not possible?

Thank you Woody for the informative tutorial. Is there a shortcut to disabling the piano touch setting because maneuvering via menu 2 and keyboard/joystick is rather time consuming especially when one has to switch between Registration memories. The older models I am acquainted with had a touch response button (on/off) just above the extreme right piano keys.

The Amazing Grace thing that is stuck is just the same on my 700. It wont go away for some reason.

I bought a PSR-S900 in 2008. The purchase for me was significant as I bought it outright having just paid off a four figure debt. Best thing I ever bought. I notice that you posted a video on the PSR-S975. I dislike intensely the rubber buttons used on the panel stretching the entire length of the keyboard. Are the buttons for ACCMPT, SYNC START, FILL IN and ENDING on the new PSR-SX 900 Keyboard rubber, or are they plastic? Is the middle piece surrounding the display also plastic, or is it aluminium? Very informative, especially to me who is out of date with modern keyboards. My only suggestion would be to demonstrate the buttons much earlier in the video, as there seemed to be a lot of talking before we actually heard any sounds.

About the problem with the touchscreen: Is there an option to calibrate the touchscreen? I own a MODX and it has a calibration function deeply buried in the utility menu. Have you calibrated yours?

Thanks for the video. I'm most interested in the chord looper and the multipads. I have the PSR-S970. Yamaha made some good new features into the SX. But most of them should have been there for years. Yamaha is very lame in this respect.

I saw your first video first, but as I can see you have become much "softer" than the last time you reviewed the psr-s970. You didn't mention the feeling of the new improved keybed at all, or what you didn't like. Is there any noticeable difference with this keybed? Does it feels like you hit your fingers on wood as the s970, when you bottom down the keys? How about the buttons, are they plastic or rubber ones? Do they feel better? How about the overal build quality, is it better than s970?

The User Interface has a nice, clear and well organized layout. But that touchscreen seems a bit laggy. Looks like one of those resistive screens.

would like to receive some very important advice from you. I have a Yamana psr S970. Here is already 3 years and a new SX 900 has been released, I would very much like to buy it. A big difference between the two synthesizers and is it worth it. Maybe a new one will be released soon and it's worth the wait? you know a lot about synthesizers, I would like some advise. PLS

Great vid as usual. I struggle a little to see the general use for this. If you have a daw and some synths, controllers and VSTs would you need something like this? It seems like if you *only* have the 900 then it's probably a great item but that reminds me of those sad solo 'pianomen' in the clubs lounge / bar doing the thing while almost no one listens. It would certainly make solo gigging easier and I suppose if the gig pays OK then who cares.

Hi Woody, you want something different? I'd like to see multiple external midi units chained up with this. Say a drum machine, bass synth and something else... external synths playing the accompaniment parts (or the accompaniment playing the external synths, I know it has assignable midi). That, I would like to see... Wow me.

13:30 I always complained about the PSR series (which I played at Church) for that. At least in this SX series, they sync up when a style is playing in the background. The 950 didn't even do that. You have to be spot on to start the pads on the beat. Korg has always done that better, but Yamaha has better sequence pads.

90s DANCE sounds, euro, and a tiny bit of trap, ........ everyone does the jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, pop and chachacharrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, shuffle sole stuff, moden it up a bit it is almost 2020 not the1970/80s other than that you are the main man, just love your freestyle stuff (im 67 years old and moved on) my pic is when i was a younger 65 year old.

The SX 900 voices are not much better than my 20 year old PSR 8000. The piano, sax, etc etc haven't changed for years in the PSR range. I suppose its to make their top Workstations sound good enough to demand huge retail prices.

I wish arrangers had more synth pop Italia disco synthwave styles they lean way to much on eastern music I have Roland EA7 korg pa 900 korg pa 1000 and yamaha psrs775 they all have a crap load of styles that you doint need.

You know, Woody, I almost hate to say this, but I had ALL of this back in 2006 when I bought my Korg PA800, which I still have today. The PA-1000 is less expensive than the SX900, has better sounds and a better product all around. I like Yamaha, I used to sell them for years, but even the Genos is way overpriced and the Korg PA4X V3.0 is a less expensive, all around better keyboard. Yamaha is bloated and 'sot in their ways.'

Get a Tripod. Like your videos, but "I don't know what this group of buttons here does ..." does not belong in a "Tour of the Front Panel" video, IMHO.

I have had this keyboard and you pay for it very expensive, but when you want to sell it, you lose a lot of money, like all yamaha keyboards, I have seen it very badly, because in the midi track arrangement function, you cannot save the changes, it is impossible, you waste time leaving a track to your liking, you follow the steps to save that says factory and when you get to the site to do your show, surprise, the midi is the same or as bad as at the beginning, bad but bad this keyboard !!! I bought the Kog PA 4X amazing keyboard
