That's how you solo. Tell a story, make it musical, build crescendos, express feel with feeling, bring it back down to subtlety and end with a good night kiss. Weckl would be proud.
I forgot how i first came across this, but i went and bought a yamaha drum kit because of this video. I obviously was trash and got rid of it after a year or so if it sittin there, but man, Larnell. You are super inspirational! I love seeing and hearing your music. Thank you for what you do
Larnell..... man, you're ridiculous dude. Easily my favorite drummer. You are part of the reason for a lot of my fast growth in drumming. I figure if i at least strive to be as good/better (which i know sounds crazy to say) than you i gain so much in the journey of trying to getting to that level. Your independence, phrasing, dynamics, and overall ear for music is out of this world. Thank you Yamaha for posting this & endorsing one of the best drummers on the planet.
4:20 to 4:40 is pure gold. Larnell is definitely one of the greats, i love everything about this video. His playing, the sound of the drums, the solo, the african rythms ... Now ... Give me this kit !
I believe he's not using any triggers. The smaller floor tom is a snare drum tuned really low. He toggles the snares on and off. When it's off, it actually sounds somewhat like a small floor tom. I may be wrong, but I've seen him use this snare drum as a floor tom/secondary deep snare in other videos he's played in.
@@jessechan9534 I have a Custom made snare that i use in the same position as this setup, it is a 16" x 5", and being made of Fiberglass with a Dunnett R4 throw makes it really easy to turn on and off...........unfortunately i am selling the kit i use it with and have no use for it anymore, so anyone interested just e-mail me, golfwizard13@hotmail.com. And this solo is incredible, not your average * See how fast i can play Solo * his feel and creativity is such a refreshing performance. ** CHEERS **
Seamless stream of consciousness. Staying this focused for the duration requires discipline and passion for the craft. Your dedication is evident for all to enjoy
Ok it took me a few times to figure out what he does at 4:30 . He first mutes it with his fingers and then drags the stick along the edges of the hi hats as he pulls his hand down. Fucking nutty Larnell
I just caught two sets of this guy's playing at a jazz festival tonight, one set with his own band and the other backing David Clayton Thomas of Blood Sweat and Tears. Larnell Lewis is a wonderful drummer, a true master. I anticipated that his playing was going to be something special when I realized he also played with Snarky Puppy, and I was not disappointed. If you get a chance to see him play live, go.
loving the sound of African drums which sets the solo off. creativity wonderful! since for sound amazing, you are truly blessed with a talent I'm inspired.
Became a huge fan of Larnell initially while seeing him play "One Note Samba" with Laila Biali at the Vancouver Int'l Jazz Fest. He has a recording on RU-vid doing it with her too. A must see!
This solo is the product of a man who genuinely loves drums. It’s a solo that seems far less about him and his ego and much more about the drums themselves and what they have to say
thoroughly enjoyed that - he could have been playing on old buckets for all it mattered, it would still have sounded amazing! MUSICAL drumming - not enough of that around...
Hey Larnell - what are the differences in sound between the Recording Custom & your Absolute Hybrid Maple kit? You make both of them sound incredible !
Honestly you don’t really need a demo of the recording custom. Just listen to 75% of all music recorded with real drums and you’re bound to stumble onto the recording custom😂
I am not positive but the ride isn't of the Special Dry variety. It seems like a K custom light ride except it is only 20 or 22" not 24. I'm sure his set up info is somewhere.
I love his playing and has definitely became one of my favorite drummers over the last couple of years. I love Yamaha drums but I didn't like the sound of them at all I n this video or the tone in which he has them tuned at but I usually love the sound of their kits. This tone just didn't do it for me.
His playing is unbelivable, but the sound off drums, nothing new, old Yamaha recording custom had it, s own story, this sound like many other drums, and i think that you can get better sound for less money
