YAMAHA REFACE CP & real things 

The best thing about this video: No gimmicks, no needless talking; just a real world sonic comparison of the Reface CP against the instruments it was designed to emulate. A suggestion to those who tune in: Listen to the audio without watching the video, it might challenge your ears. Also, take into consideration the actual instruments used in this demo probably weren't the actual instruments that were sampled for the Reface, so expect some tonal differences in that regard. Even so, this is a great demo. Thanks for posting, I really needed to hear this.

this "thing" is def not a toy...top notch sounds and effects..like really really good, the Rhodes sounds exactlylike a Rhodes, the clavi sounds like a real clavi..the hidden piano sounds like the grand piano on the $3000 or more motif

Thanks for this. Really helpful for identifying why the CP clav doesn't sound funky like your real one. It needs some EQ to make it more "nasal". A parallel compressor with a slow attack to enhance the attack would help too.

The appeal to me of the Reface CP is the "artificial" style of the sounds. It's got enough of the character of the real thing, but has an electronic vibe going, too, that's just great for FX/ambient/experimental stuff. I can't get those sounds out of an actual electric piano, etc. A perfect companion to the OP-1 for me.

I actually kind of wish they had put a detune effect on for the CP sample. Ever so slightly out of tune is the classic sound of the CP70/80 in my opinion, :)

Really useful comparison. Some sounds are closer to the originals than others. I personally think the Wurlitzer is quite similar, the Rhodes less so - although individual Rhodes instruments can greatly vary in sound as well. For Rhodes, I personally think the modeled ones in the Roland high end stage pianos are the best. (Too bad the internal overdrive is not too good.) I immensely enjoy your videos, I think I have viewed all your Hammond / Leslie / overdrive ones. It really helps to get an idea of how instruments can sounds without buying it all...

Yeah, i mean it's inferior in sound quality to the real counterparts, or even other more expensive keyboards. But in a matter of price and "transport-friendly-ness" i think it's well worth. Besides i'm positive that one could give more life to the instrument by using eq or specific modulation pedals if one would want that.

For years pianos and organs have been emulated with sampling or modelling to a more than acceptable level to where the differences are purely academic, even if you're making a recording. Not saying the feel of playing a real clav, hammond, rhodes etc. can ever be replicated but in terms of sound and gigging these comparisons just plain show the emulations are more than good enough with today's technology. Both the Reface CP and YC are as good as they can reasonably be expected to be and it's astounding they come with minikeys, the other alternatives being the grossly over-featured Clavias and Yamaha CPs series and YC61 which are cool if you want that level of control but most real players actually don't. We can have a nice full size board with simple controls lik and stomp.box like effects like on these Reface and no damn screen for 1200 dollars tops. A nice simple board where you can split the vintage sounds and just play in your band like it's a real instrument. No screens, no menus. Crumar is trying but getting it wrong with spending all their money on modelling pianos and rotary encoders. Time for vintage sound keyboards with just a few controls.

I really appreciate your video. Bought a Reface CP a few weeks ago, but not sure if I’ll keep it. Some of the sounds are pretty good (especially for the price these days, I paid $340 USD for a new one), but I dont have a full-size MIDI controller to play it, so I’m stuck with the mini keys. I’m not really a keyboard player, but I feel like I’m missing some of the detail. It is a pretty fun little instrument even with its limitations, but I definitely dont feel like I’m playing a real Rhodes.

So... you're using a Midi controller midi'ed to the Reface? Is the piano patch on Reface called "Hidden Acoustic Piano"?

Ciao Marco posso chiederti un tuo parere di comparazione con Exspander Waldorf Zarenboug che sarebbe il motore sonoro della versione a tastiera avendo una wav rim sound di 4 giga e questo Yamaha CP quale secondo te è più realistico hai strumenti vintage che ha suonato tu in questo video in particolare Il Rhodes - Wurlitzer e CP80 - clavinet ? Siccome ho intenzione di prendere un exspander da mettere in midi ad una Keylab MK II - considerando i prezzi di entrambi gli strumenti 330 euro la Yamaha Cp Reface contro 700 euro del Waldorf mi piacerebbe avere un tuo giudizio visto che hai gli strumenti originali. Grazie

At 8.20mins it's tremelo (amplitude modulation) not vibrato (pitch modulation). Good video thanks.

To my ears the biggest negative that sticks out about the Reface CP is its lack of warmth and subtlety in terms of dynamics and resonance compared to the actual CP-70 EG, A200 Wurly, D6 Clav. But like I said before, you can't have everything...at least not yet.

Yea, the Reface is certainly characterless and sterile in comparison to the real things But the built-in effects I find to be surprisingly great

The Reface sounds better then some of your real stuff, sorry to say. I know it's tough to defend so much money wasted when a 300 dollar kit can do same or better. especially that CP70B, its sound taken right out of a WHAM song, horrible sounding

Wurlitzer ftw -Often imitated, never duplicated. Imitation Clavinet is horrible, as always. Great video, though!
