There are some incorrect and misleading information in this video and I'd like to correct it. I'll also add some more information about the synthesizer's functions. Warning! This is going to be a long one! :-) I just hope that you and some of your viewers find this helpful. 6:17 - The mod slider adds multiple saw waves together with the one saw wave and detunes them depending on how much you raise the slider. If the slider is moved all the way to the top, then it works as a typical "supersaw" sound. If you raise it just a bit it sounds like two oscillators, which are slightly tuned differently. If you keep the slider somewhere in the middle it can also sound quite similar to a "unison" option found in various synths. The texture slider just adds a sub oscillator and the mod slider does nothing to it. 6:37 - The mod slider changes the pulse width of the square wave. (It doesn't detune anything like you thought in the video.) The texture slider adds a second oscillator and changes its pitch one semitone at a time. 6:50 - Some others have also pointed out that it's an oscillator sync option and not a ring modulator. It's a saw wave but the texture slider changes the amount of the oscillator sync. The mod changes the level of how effectively the ADSR envelope changes the amount of osc sync. A typical method of using the oscillator sync is to use the envelope to change the osc sync level. If you use it like that then you can usually keep the texture slider at zero or at a very low amount. 7:01 - That's the ring modulator. You need two oscillators to have a ring modulation. Both of the sliders control the pitch of one of these oscillators. 7:10 - That's correct. It is a sine wave. You can get FM sounds here. Usually FM synthesis, like in the Yamaha DX7, uses only sine waves modulating each other in a complex way but if you can modify the pitch of an oscillator with another (audible rate) oscillator then it's already Frequency Modulation even on an old vintage analog synth. A Minimoog can do that for example. The texture slider changes the FM depth. The mod changes the FM source's pitch. When you move the mod slider towards the top, then it also adds noise. If you want to have just the noise and nothing else, set the octave as low as possible and play with the lowest notes (and just keep the texture slider at zero). In this video you thought that the sliders might add distortion. They don't but a good idea to try is to use the effect section's distortion while adding some FM to the sine wave. You can get a nice distorted lead guitar sound for example. One thing to remember when creating any sounds is to always adjust the ADSR controls to let the sound be more alive. Just experiment with it a little bit. :-) 8:41 - The pitch option of the LFO already modulates "the oscillators themselves" like you said in the video about the Osc option. The Osc option of the LFO does many different things depending on the selected osc type: Osc = Saw wave - The LFO modulates only the pitch of the main osc, not the sub (from the texture slider) Osc = Square wave - The LFO modulates the pulse width, giving you pulse width modulation (PWM) Osc = Osc sync - The LFO modulates the osc sync level Osc = Ring mod - The LFO modulates the pitch of only one of the oscillators in the ring mod osc type Osc = Sine wave/FM/Noise - The LFO modulates the FM amount. 8:57 - The text added at this point to the video incorrectly says "LFO" when it should say "ADSR" instead. (The slider has nothing to do with the LFO.) If the slider is at zero, then the ADSR controls of the EG (envelope generator) does nothing to the filter's Cutoff point. Then the ADSR sliders are only controlling the amplification (sound volume) over time. However, when the slider is moved upwards then the ADSR is more and more controlling the filter's Cutoff. (Separate ADSR sliders for controlling the filter's cutoff or the oscillator's pitch is always preferable.) 10:15 - I really like the effects... The chorus has also a very usable flanger effect included. If you want to use the flanger you only need to raise the depth of the chorus very high. You can hear when the effect changes to a flanger from the chorus. There are many other things I could say but I'll just mention that the delay is very vintage sounding. It's always fun to adjust the delay rate while playing. You can even feedback it with the sliders and create some FX using only the delay. The same could be done with a vintage Roland Space Echo for example. This is a nice option to have. 10:30 - That's NOT all you can do with this synthesizer. :-) Thanks for the effort though. You were still right about many things... There seems to be lots of confusion with some of the sound changing options in synthesizers in many RU-vid videos. You're not the only one.

I don't know why RU-vid only suggested this video just now. After several years the CS is still my favourite _keyboard_ synth (the Roland AE-30 wind synth has now stolen "favourite synth" from the CS). I actually like the interface because they designed the reduced control set so well; very fast to dial in great sounds. I backup patches to my old laptop but only for recall purposes in case I need to redo a part. Generally I create new sounds every time.

It's a great synth (all the Refaces are). For me, playing expressively is an important feature, and having the PEAK in my setup made the CS a bit redundant ;)

I'm a musician and I've been designing sounds with synthesizers for quite some time. I own the Reface CS together with some more vintage synthesizers. When I bought the Reface CS I was really surprised. It's a very useful and fun little synth! The filter is very versatile and it has many sweet spots. If you're wondering if you should buy this synth then it's always best to test it yourself. Don't just rely on one or two RU-vid demos.

Yes, that's right. Also, there are a lot of other videos showing the CS' capabilites (the latest one by BoBeats: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a5awWatRiS0.html - check it out, it's very good). Also, this one - but you propably have already seen it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zesgeFEfMuY.html For me, the CS just didn't "click", mainly because I'm used to playing on a piano, so having no velocity sensivity is quite irritating. That, of course, is my very personal opinion, as I said in the end of the vid. ;-)

@@mr_floydst Thanks for the links! The Sea creatures was a great demo! It's refreshing to hear such a good composition and all the 3 parts were very good. Some of the sounds later in the demo were also excellent. I've already seen the demonstration by BoBeats and it's great as well. I guess the only thing that he could have explained better was the function of the mod slider in Osc Sync mode. The problem with the sound demos are the fact that everyone has different pair of ears and different tastes. I don't like some of the sounds BoBeats makes for example but some of them are good too. There are always people who are new to the Reface CS, or synths in general, and will think that those are the only kind of sounds that the Reface CS makes. If some player doesn't know how to play very well it also hinders their ability to play something that sounds good. It always depends on how good the player is and how well he knows the instrument. Then he or she might have the best ability to make some good sounds that also fit well in her or his playing. Well, I'm writing too much again. :-) This is nothing new to most people. It just makes me sad when there are people who misjudge an instrument without it even getting a fair chance and if they also get some wrong information about it.

@@mr_floydst This is the first great demo of the Reface CS I found. It was made back in 2016 and demonstrates quite well the versatility of sounds you can make with the synth. It might be useful to you and your viewers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--03Hd0MBgQY.html He plays quite well and the playing fits the sounds nicely. That's a fine demonstration but once again, some of the sounds are boring and some very interesting depending on your tastes. :-) The demo was one of the reasons why I bought the synth. Some of the more interesting sounds for me can be heard after the 2:20 mark. There are some other fine demos out there but sometimes they are just too hard to find...

from my research the reface cs is actually velocity sensitive. it is setup such that it automatically effects the volume. obviously it's not the best implementation and it would be nice to have options to control the filter and such, but it's better than no velocity sensitivity i'd say. also, i have a question: would setting a really fast delay emulate a reverb sound on it? i'm super close to buying one of these
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 6 лет назад
Hi! Yes, I read that, too, but in "real life" I wasn't able to hear it. Your idea (reverb) could work, but the delay is mono, so the "reverb" would be, too.

I hate the velocity sensitivity in the reface. I've owned mine since February and use it almost daily for fun hobbyist purposes. The velocity sensitivity only works within a DAW via midi and it is SHIT. I always turn it off if I can, but I found some daws to not have an option anywhere to disable it. Luckily FL studio makes it really easy to disable. I don't reccomend the velocity sensitivity at all. The keys are far too small to use it so using it is more like playing a harpsichord. Too loud or too quiet.

I had one and I miss it a little. It sounded Fantastic much better than the ultra/mini nova, micro korg, or the volcas (except the keys which sounds pretty good but is very limited). For me the lack of patch storage, reverb, and second oscillator were the major drawbacks. I’m hoping the modal skulpt sounds as good. ( edit I rebought one. I’ll never sell it this time around. )

I use strymon flint for reverb - OK - the flint is double as much than I paid for the CS ;-) The more I use it now, the more I like it. Functional stuff that is missing I try to get around by musical ideas, multitracking or additional FX in the DAW. One side note: do a little EQ and it will push the sound incredible, especially in the sub / low frequency area. Sold my mininova within a few days. Love the simplicity of the CS as well as the beautiful design & build. The CS is a sweetspot machine.

T.I.N Mateus I revisited a microkorg again and I have to agree. The reface sounds great and has great keys but the ms2000 is do deep and rewarding. I would say that the reface is better for simple pads but for evolving textures the microkorg is fantastic.

could you explain the multi-itiberal vs polyphonic aspect? thats a bit confusing... thanks!!!
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 5 лет назад
Hi, thanks for watching. An Instrument is "polyphonic" when it can output more than one note at a time (so you can play chords). "Multitimbral" means it can play more than one sound at a time (e.g. a piano sound and a string sound). The CS is polyphonic, but not multitimbral.

Are the speakers any good ? Do you feel any bass coming out of them ? What is the battery life ? I ask because this is the reason these things were made in the first place, and nobody is talking about it. And that may be the only reason to buy them.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 5 лет назад
Hi, thanks for watching. The speaker quality is not great, they sound flat and tend to distort. They're loud enough so you can hear yourself playing e.g. in a classroom. Don't buy this for the internal speakers. Battery life is very good, on the other Hand. I have no actual numbers, but I think a set of batteries lasts a full day of playing or more. (I didn't change the batteries in my CP for a year and they still work).

Thanks for watching. I can't really say, never owned a Mininova. Compared to the Circuit (which has "a Nova Synth Engine", whatever that means), the CS sounds much, much better. Sound is more "powerful" (which means, more bass, I think).

@@mr_floydst thank you. I'm new so I'm a bit lost... By ear, I tend to like the CS sounds more, but people on forums are all for the Mininova (yes, Nova engine is the synth engine powering both models). From what I read it seems that Mininova has a more complex synth engine capable of more versatility compared to the CS. Also people are complaining for lack of preset memory in CS... The JD-XI is some kind of middle ground between those two ;-) Is has a real analog (but monophonic) synth built-in. All of them sound great in their own way. I'd say the JD-XI is the best option if you're not certain what's more important to you. I kind of agree with you, but you get a quite capable midi controller (the sliders do send CC data) here, and the mini keys are very playable. The price at release ($500 if I remember correctly) was too high, but $250-$275 is justified. Out of the four, the DX is the most capable synth, and the CP is the most fun. The CS is too limited in my opinion, and I never tried the YC.

@@mr_floydst Agreed. I wanted the Reface CS to be a true modern miniature CS80, or at least a CS50. It just sounds like a really nice analog synth, whereas the real CS sounded quite unlike any other
