Over the last few years, I have owned [now own] 5 or 6 of these. I just bought another in 2/2022. I like receivers that have pre-amp OUT RCA jacks to feed external amps. The new receivers in 2022 are eliminating pre-amp out jacks to save money.
I have the RX-A2080 and I have a 7:1 speaker system. All of my speakers are wall and ceiling mounted. I have wall mounted two fronts and a center speaker and the other four are in the ceiling. I used surround, surround back, center and front connections for the theater. I also have four ceiling mount speaker outside the theater that I'm trying to set up as zone 2 but I can't get it to work. I don't think I've physically connected my speakers correctly as I've used multicast to create zone 2 and believe I've connected it correctly
Man that is a great looking receiver. Love the aesthetics of that face plate. Looks like it has a great build quality. Great rear panel layout, with an awesome selection of inputs. Really like those pre-outs. Like the removable power cord, so you can upgrade if wanted. It also has plenty of power right out of the box, and it is very versatile. Bonus! Thanks for the video man!
Thanks for the informative channel, I really enjoy the practical way you talk about products/technologies! :) I am quite new at this home theater world, and just recently upgraded from a 5 years old Onkyo HT-R390 to a Yamaha RX-A880. It is a huge update however I feel both music and movie playback is a little more "colder", has little less richness. I heard that Denon has a little better more "warm/rich" movie performance in general. I could have bought also for the same price a Denon X-3600H, maybe I rushed things a little? Also heard Denon can have more problems by overheating in comparison with the Yamaha Avantage series, which could affect longevity, in the end, that is why I choose Yamaha. What is your opinion about that matter? Which brand do You think perform best for an average living room 4 x 4 m and 2.5 m height. I have Klipsch RC-52 center, RF-62 fronts, R-10SW, and for surround had to use the 4 small old Onkyo mini speakers because I ran out of budget. :) Still I managed to set up 5.1.2. :) Thanks for the answers, a fan of your channel from Sandefjord, Norway. :)
I was planning to get a more budget-friendly Yamaha model, but then I decided to go all-in with the new CX-A5200 processor. It's the top model Yamaha has and the price was fairly steep, but I'm happy with it. The surround options are simple, but versatile enough for most home theater hobbyists.
You've got a highly informative channel. I just got a 2 sony SScs3 floor standing speakers, 1 SS cs8 center speaker, 2 ss cs5 bookshelf speakers, 2 ss cse ceiling speakers and a SA cs9 sub. Do think this Yamaha RX A2080 is a perfect receiver to drive this set up and bring the best audio quality of these Sony speaker? Hope to hear your professional advice soon. Thanks a million.
Techno Dad I have RX A-2080 receiver and I am having trouble with the speaker set up. I have a complete Klipsch system (2- R8000F towers, 1- RP 504C center, 2 PRO 180 RPC in ceiling Back channel and 2- 180 RPC LCR front height celing speakers. I also have 2 SPL-100 Subs. I get no sub response and little surround sound experience. You're video help me understand the receiver set up a little better but the sub set up is still a little confusing. Thank you for any and all help that you can provide. PS! I plan on getting the EMOTIVA XPA-7 in the future as I have already found the power levels of the A-2080 lacking for my needs.
I have the 1060. Turning the 1 to a 2 would get me 2 extra channels. Not sure what turning the 6 to an 8 would get me. Btw you definitely need to double-check the YPAO results. I moved my sub to make space for the Christmas tree, ran YPAO and forgot about it. But somethig sounded weird. Turns out YPAO decided my front right speaker was 15m away!
Yamaha is killing it, I'm so ready to upgrade to 5.2.4 but im on the fence... dont know if i stay with onkyo since it's so awesome or move onto yamaha. I have a a youtube video coming up showing off my 5.1.2 setup. And why it's time to upgrade. Awesome video @technodad
I have a feeling all the manufacturers have reached parity at this point. Just compare price vs features. One reason I have stuck with Yamaha is because I read that the amps sound less harsh for music. I have not really compared other amps for music in detail but on my setup I don't get the overly harsh/bright sound I've heard on others' setups, and I see no reason to change.
Hey great channel . Just heard a 780 and was impressed by the new surround processing, especially the center dialog. A 2080 would be nice to play around with. You mentioned this wasn't loud enough without cranking it up. The modern receivers just don't have big enough transformers to distribute to all channels like the old ones. That receiver is only putting out maybe 60 watts per ch with all driven. The rated wattage is only attainable to 2 or at best 3 channels. If you run only 3 channels preferably front L,R and, center for keeping the original sound of Yamaha intact and you get full or close to full 140 w per channel and use external amps for the rest. (some may prefer external amps for FCR if they are really good ) Realize not everyone can do this but just my 2 cents for what it's worth.
Do you guys recommend a specific power amp for running a 5.0.2 set up? (Klipsch 8060FA mains, 450C center and a pair of 502s bipoles for surround). Currently have a Yamaha 850 and have to crank up for older movies.
With this receiver I would probably use a 2 channel for front LR connected to those pre outs with at least 100 watts per ch. I'm not too familiar with the newer stuff but did have a Emotia basX300 which would have been a good fit. Also a Yamaha AS series amp would be good. Even though it's integrated it has a through mode for home theater. You should get close to rated power on this receiver with only 3 channels running on the rest of the channels connected to the receiver since it has about a 400 watt transformer. That doesn't directly correlate to output power but is a good estimate on these type scenerios. If you are going older equipment there are plenty of 2 channel amps for this purpose. Preferably Yamaha since same brand equipment tends to match up better. Others to consider would be Nakamichi, Carver, NAD, Adcom.
Audio Gear thanks for suggestions, man. I’m brand new and learning on the go with HT audio. Techno Dad, forums and responses like yours really help me out! The one thing I’m curious about is if my center should also go to the separate amp so that my whole front stage sounds the same. Thus would require multichannel amp.
Me too, I was ripping my hair out with that damn parametric EQ but once I researched it and figured it out the Yamaha 3080 blows my other 2 receivers out of the water.
Hi TecnoDad. Thanks for another great review, especially with the graphics indicating the buttons, connection etc., Two questions. 1) out of curiosity may I know which software did you use. 2) Any plans to review Macintosh multi channel amplifiers? ( sorry if you already reviewed and I missed). Thanks
Hi! Thanks! That stuff takes a lot of time...I use Final Cut Pro X and some third party graphics bundles I've purchased for that kinda of stuff. I'd love to get some McIntosh items but I don't think they want to send me any to review. They already have a huge presence.
PERFECT!!! It worked!! I pushed the info button on the front of the Yamaha receiver and it showed Atmos/DTHD! Now my question is does that mean it’s playing in Atmos or Dolby true HD? Thank you Sir!!
Best reviews around, thanks. I'm thorn between the rx2080 and the rx880 with the emotiva 5175. I want to keep my budget around $1500. I love music so the dual sabre dacs are a big selling point. That's also why I want to go separates and add the emotiva. What's your thoughts?
Techno Dad I understand why you can't do that. but you should understand why consumer reports does that: to remain as unbiased as possible. you should understand why people are criticizing you, and you can't be unbiased when companies give you free stuff. just own up to that, be completely transparent, tell people to take what you say with a grain of salt, and there won't be as big of an issue.
Yeah, I still don’t get free stuff from companies. If I do, then I say it’s a sponsored video. That’s the definition of a sponsored video. People need to stop spreading lies about me, such as: “he takes money from his subscribers pockets”. Not true. “All his videos are sponsored trash”. Not true. “He doesn’t buy the equipment he reviews”. Not true. I’ve spent over $20k on equipment this year. I’ve made less than half that from RU-vid and amazon. To say I HAVE to buy everything I Review is ridiculous. I have always said to look at a tv with your own eyes before buying and if your buying speakers go listen to them before you buy. Just because someone has a soap box and says the same thing over and over doesn’t mean it’s true. Someone’s out there not knowing the whole truth spreading slanderous and defamatory statements about my character and you don’t take him with a grain of salt? That’s messed up. I am completely transparent and have followed all guidelines set forth by the FCC. Can’t be more transparent than that. You can believe whomever you want, that’s your business. But don’t come here and tell me I can’t be honest because someone sends me a review unit that I have to give back. It’s actually very easy to be honest. I have been very blessed in life and have nothing to lie about. So like you said everything on the internet needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Not just what you hear from me, but everyone else that says “trust me guys...”
areallytallguy your comment says a lot more about YOU than Technodad. It tells me that YOU are easily bought off and swayed, therefore you think everyone else must be as well. Clearly you are following someone who has their OWN credibility problems who is bldg their "rep" by lying and attacking everyone else, and you are listening and parroting them like some unthinking sheep. TD clearly states when he receives review product, As a matter of fact, these days companies REQUIRE people to say they received the review product. if that's not good enough then that's a YOU problem.
Channa , I have the option of changing my Denon 4400h for the Yamaha 3080. I know you are reviewing the 2080, but would you recommend it over the Denon?
Use to run Yamaha but I didn’t care for the sound. It just sounds to processed if that makes sense. And not being able to run all 4 Atmos ceiling speakers. Denon sounds better and you can run whatever setup you may have. But that’s just my opinion.
Hey Channa, are you able to run the rear presence speakers with an additional 2 channel amp? All while running the rear surround speakers at the same time. The manual doesn't really explain if this is possible. I'm guessing it would be assigned to Zone 2. If that's the case, will Zone 2 play rear presence sound effects? Thanks
Nice receiver. Iam interested on what you have to say regarding the Yamaha. I have a current Denon AVR. I may move on up to the line to the Denon AVR-4500x but the Yamaha is built and a real beauty as beautiful as a black box gets).. Iam particularly interested in the current DSP on the Yamaha as I don’t think they support Auro 3D (....yet). I seem to recall they have a like version. What are you using for a receiver? Denon I thought. 4400?
Hi, your comment at the end about the volume is wierd, if you run the auto calibration, your speakers are set to reference @ 0db, -10db with this receiver should be the same as a Denon or Marantz @ -10db. You should check the speakers levels, Yamaha Avantage line have really good amplifier, good power supply, really good construction. For the record, right now I have a Denon, but I had the chance of owning a Yamaha before and was really good. Keep the good work, try to compare YPAO vs Audyssey!
Hi Joel! I always felt the same way about the Denon. That's why I had an external amp connected to the Denon. I will probably use the same amp with the Yamaha. I am not really getting any volume until -30db.
great video. i own a aventage rxA-2030 which has been awesome. We just painted the house and i went to plug everything back in and now the receiver won't recognize the subwoofer. I reset 2030 to factory settings. Sub powers up but no matter what i do i cannot get sound out of the sub. The front speaker is set to small and the sub is on in speaker settings.
How many powered zones can I run with this receiver? I am planning on running a 5.1 surround along with 2 kitchen speakers and two outdoor speakers. Would I need an additional amp to run this set up? Thanks!
Oh i been a victim of this yamaha rx 2080, tried it in many ways. Yamaha sounds is like having nasal congestion, even with external amp. Ive tried it with my klipsch Rp series, bose acoustimas, q acoustic Towers, Micca rb42, def tech. The only one that made it shines a bit is with klipsch. My Sony 1070 or my 1080, 790 entry receiver sound way better to my ears.
Thanks for your videos I have a question if can please answer it My Yamaha RX-A2050 is constantly defaults to PCM on my Apple TV 4K and my HTPC The only time it shows the correct source audio format is when I what’s my Xfinity cable Box. Dolby atmos on Apple TV or Netflix TV app (LG 65E9) decode as PCM What am I doing wrong?
Dude I need ur help! I don’t know much about systems so I’m hoping u can help. I was given old home (but beautiful) stereo system. It consist of a 10 disc JVC receiver and a stereo JVC receiver. It’s hooked up to two BIG Cherry wood subs (each speaker has a big tweeter and two 15in subs on it). When I play music the subs don’t even move! Do I need a new receiver or an amplifier to get the full effect of the subs? If so, what do U recommend?
Has the full review dropped yet? I'd like to know your thoughts on surround ai and if that feature is worth waiting for the 90 series to drop so I can pick up a refurbished 1080 from A4L. Right now I'm looking at the 780 or 1070
Happy New year. Question if I have 5.1.2 Atmos setup. And I'm watching a show in Dolby digital or a movie in Dolby digital Plus. Do the height speakers still produce sound? If it's not in Atmos format .
Hi Techno Dad. I've just up graded from a RX-V863 to a RXV1085, I have B&W bi amped front speakers. I've wired the bottom 2 wires into the Front sockets, the upper 2 I've wired into the Extra SP1 sockets, is this right? Also, how do I change from 5.1 to 2.1? Cheers.
@@TechnoDad I have an RX-A3000, but the addition of the Sabre DAC Pro in the 3080 may cause me to upgrade or simply await the new RX-A8 if they could get the HDMI 2.1 compatible to the 8K codecs).
HELP! Have the 2080 - want 7.1.2 setup but with the height speakers as rear height. No front height presence. Have height speakers plugged into the SP2 speaker jacks. However, in Power Amp settings, I can't select Rear Presence - it's grayed out, unless I first select front presence. Even if I select both front and rear presence and then do YPAO it won't find the rear height presence speakers. I could have sworn I had this set up this way with only rear height speakers before I brought it in for repair and it was reset to factory defaults.
i have the rx-a660 yamaha receiver what i need to know is how to make the adjustments on this receiver to the best setting so that when i play a movie it will show if its dolbe atmos or dtx ? witch button should i turn and should it be straight or direct ? should the speakers be set to -225 or +225 i do have the definitives 9080's so i dont need a sub should i set the sub on the speakers to normal or reverse ? should i set the fronts to bi-amping or overhead ?? see what im dealing with lol i really could use your help i use the automatic speaker set up but there still some manuals that have to be set im in no hurry cause i know your busy so take your time i think i saw a small video explaining it but it was not what i was looking for thanks dad lol
Hi there, i have two BP9060 speaker, one MartinLogan - Dynamo 700W SUB and a Marantz - SR 7.2-Ch Model:SR5013 Receiver. I will NOT use this system for Home Theater, only for music, what is the best setup you recommend thanks.
One thing that annoys me about my 1060 is that if I'm using Dolby Surround or DTS up-mixing to the ceiling channels, it won't automatically switch to pure Atmos if an Atmos signal is present. Mainly a problem on my satellite TV receiver which will output 5.1 or Atmos depending on content but won't tell me when Atmos is present. It means I have to fiddle about with buttons, or if I'm out my family miss out on Atmos.
That's lame. I think there's just different sound formats that don't click over sometimes. Wish there was a way to fix it. Do they really care about Atmos or do you want to just make sure it's on when it's supposed to be?
@@TechnoDad I probably care more than them, in truth. The lack of auto switch seems to be a consequence of UI design: you either have "direct" on (needed for Atmos) *or* you have sound processing on (e.g for up-mixing to extra channels).
Is it better to go with a 7.1.2 or a 5.1.4 with this receiver. My theater room is about 400 sq feet with the seating up against the wall. I really wanted to do a 7.1.4 setup but the 2080 cant support it. Is it worth spending quite a bit more to get the a3080 to gain the ability to run 7.1.4 given my room size. Thank You very much.
What about a 7.1.2 set up? I only have one rear sub woofer...Would I still go to basic to complete set up or do I need to assign the front presence speakers Height/Dolby Atmos speakers?
Hey Channa... thanks for the channel, you always educate. QUESTION: If "140m WpCH @ 8 Ohms into 2 Channels".... then ??? WpCH @ 8Ohms go into 9 channels PLS? Why do manufacturer weasels not just give the bottom line? IF we start at 140 W...and a lot of towers says that you'll need a min. 30 W to power your speaker... the does that mean that a 9 channel AVR needs a min. 270 W to put out MIN. opertaing sound? ie. 30W X 9CH = 270 WATT minimum requirement. God Bless, power on brother... Geo
Hi! Yeah, it's really lame that they won't tell us the numbers with all channels driven. That's why I always recommend an external amp for your 5 main speakers. At least that way, you can guarantee that your five ear level speakers will be getting 120 watts RMS all the time. Then you let the AVR power the height channels and you're good to go. Most of the time those height channels aren't being used, especially when you're watching TV.
@@TechnoDad Thanks for confirming my thought, was my math off though? Am I only going to be getting 1/2 the wattage that towers need. Ie 15 watts pSPEAKER at 9 speakers? 9 x 15 = 135_ish watts TOT. Or do amps work differently than that ? I am not an electrician or science guy. Thx Geo
I have planned to purchase a Bose acoustimas 10V series. I want to ask you if the above receiver is suitable for Bose home theater. I want to use it for listening music and movies. Please give your valuable feedback. Thank you
I just pick up the unit and notice that the unit don’t display dts when playing a disc with dts ? Why is this. What am I missing in the setup. It either only show. Surround AI or auto decode
Chana, If I want to connect an external amp to this Yamaha receiver, do I have to change any settings in the receiver itself or do the pre-outs just automatically work? Getting an emotiva in a couple of weeks and I’m running a 5.2.4. With this receiver. Thanks!
Hello I like your videos and watch them regularly I need help with my Yamaha RX V1085 does it support 5.1.2 setup for height speakers instead of a 7.1 setup where do I plug my speaker wire in 2
My honest opinion on my Denon AVC-X8500H is I wouldn't hesitate or purse to throw it into the CAT LITTER BOX a pile of dolby Atmos dtsx auro3d junk. The first one died within 2hrs of opening the box and took 48hrs to get a new replacement with dead one sent back. It has glitches in its software like all these rubbish AVR today now due to them all being a bit like computers now.
Hey bro, when I had my old denon avr 3805 7.1 loud voices would be outputted from all speakers, now that I bought a Yamaha TSR 7850 loud voice is only outputted from center speaker and rest only low background noises. Any suggestions?thanks in advance.
Hi @Techno Dad, recently i got Yamaha RX-V2085 for 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos setup, my room is 3800 cubic ft, what's your review on RX-V2085? & is two PB1000 SVS Subwoofers are good for this size room?
Hii techno, please how do you compare Yamaha receivers and marantz recievers.incase if i want to upgrade in the future.i like listening to music and movies.my current receiver is Yamaha RX2080
This model seems priced to compete with the denon avr-x4500h in terms of pricing but offers 15 watts per channel more of power. I'm curious to know how that increase translates to real world performance. Also I'd like to know what are your thoughts on how the Yamaha compares to the denon with both music and movies.
@@TechnoDad I don't mean in terms of volume output but in terms of how it translates into both playing at regular volume levels and how they compare in terms of headroom or if there's noticeable compression comparing the two hitting reference levels.
Got a question Chana. I have a Sony DA 3700 ES. Just bought a LG C8 65”. I can’t, for the life of me, get the home screen of my receiver to come up on the C8. I’ve tried everything I can think of. Any ideas?
Hi! Not sure what the problem is. Looks like there's only one HDMI out on the AVR. Did you try swapping HDMI cables out? May or may not fix the situation. I'm sure you may have tried that already though. Honestly, I'm not sure what would cause this.
So How about LEFT and Right and Center Speakers FROM Klipsch and Maybe Letf and RIGHT SURROUND and 4 SVS Height Elevation Speakers and SVS Sub??? Would that Be a Good Ideal Set??? I Remember When U Told Me that With Just SVS Alone, I Would Need a External Amplifier Added for More Kick, I Imagine????
Hi! That would be a good system. Yeah, with Klipsch you're at 98db sensitivity and some of the SVS speakers go down to 87db which would relate to a huge drop in volume.
Hey Techno Dad...love your videos always... I have a Yamaha 3070 aventage series...what setup would be ideal for good results on the same...I can't show you the pic here...thanks
I have a question please, Do we have to set the speaker configuration on Basic (power amp assign ) even though we have a power amp to support it externally?
Hi! I think you do as that’s what the AVR will need to know to process the signal. Like, it needs to know if you’re running a 5.1.4 or a 7.1.2. Both are 9 channel configurations, but also very different.
Does this this unit have hdmi 4k pass thru to a tv while playing a different source like am/fm to my music cast speakers? And does it have to be on the correct hdmi source to tv for pass-thru when power is off like my rxv-681 does? Thanks for any info. Rich.
I have no ceiling precense (atmos) i did everything but the high speakers are dead silence. via setup they give sound . but with atmos movies and so one. nothing.
Hey techno dad, I need help choosing a centre channel for my Yamaha rx v585. I been looking at klipsch and have 3 in mind R 25c rc 42 or the more expansive rp 250. I live in a small apartment and I want the best dialogue for movies. Will I see a difference or should I just keep my 6ohms 130 watt onkyo centre? (Skc-591)
Hello techno dad. I have a pioneer elite a-20 which I am using to run the Klipsch R-41-SA speakers. I have read may reviews that this may not be powerful enough can you provide me some help
Techno Dad thanks for the reply yes just powering the Dolby Atmos rear speakers. I have tried 2 amps and have to have the gain at 80% but heard that’s normal. Happy New Year
Onkyo but thinking of getting r-15m bookshelf speakers for left /. Right channel and using the mini onkyo satellite spearkers for surround back in a 5.1 setup
Hi Techno Dad, I need your help...which av reciever do you suggest for klipsch speakers....RP280f and center 450c....thank you for your help....is this yamaha ok for this speakers?
Hi, now I have Yamaha rx a 730...but I dont know if this reciever is strong enough for this speakers (I have bi-amp connection)....do you thing if I go for Yamaha rx a 2080 or 2070 or 1080...that would be some improvements or not?...budget...arround 1500€.
I wanted to know that how can I can configure Yamaha 2080 speaker layout in 5.2.4 format using surround back speaker. Again need to understand the speaker level settings. I do not want to use the YPAO. I am usin elac sub with phase -0, volume-95, crossover 80Hz. Is it ok. Your suggestion will guide me in listening best sound
For my denon avrx6500h i want add Yamaha mxa5200 amplifire do you think this is a good idia or i have to change my receiver to Yamaha cxa5200 to munching with mxa5200
Can anyone tell me what’s amps do this receiver use. I currently use a pioneer elite which uses a D3 amp. I can’t find any information about the amps in this or the 3080 use. Does it over heat?
