We continue here with the inspection and adjustment of the valve lash on a Star 650, also known as a Vstar 650 or Dragstar 650, depending on where you live. Having just finished the front exhaust value, the inspection cover for the cam is closed after both the cover and mating surfaces are cleaned and the O ring inspected. This, as well, torques to 7.5 ft/lbs.
The process would then continue to the rear cylinder again having to remove the cam cover for the rear and rotate the engine, this time to the TI mark. On this side, one can see the dot on the cam as the engine is rotated making it somewhat easier. Aside from this, the adjustment on the valves for the rear remains identical if not slightly easier on the exhaust side than that of the front.
Having completed the rear adjustment, all chrome pieces are first washed with dish detergent and then using windex and chrome polish, dressed to a shine. Before installing them however, the spark plugs have miles of room for installation and should be added first. Make sure as the covers are installed that the pretty hex screws are used on the top covers; don't make the same mistake I did.
With all of the covers back on, be sure to re-add the hose clip for the breather, and then remount the rear ignition coil. A final cleaning to remove fingerprints removes all work evidence. A successful job awaiting a carb reinstallation.

Wish I'd of watched these videos when I rebuilt the carbs a few months ago. This is my weekend project. Would have saved me a bunch of work doing it then. Adjust valves, sync carbs, and change front caliper and she'll be on the road by next weekend. Thanks for posting!

I’m going to do this job myself, many thanks, I’ve just ordered the six “O” rings needed to replace the old ones, might as well do it if I’m going through this lengthy process. It doesn’t look hard, just time consuming.

Thank you for your inspirational videos, very much appreciated 😊( I ride a 2002 Yamaha 650 Vstar Classic ) have you a video for replacing the intake manifold ? Mine needs to be replaced.. Also,, my engine light stopped coming on recently and was wondering if you have any idea as to why ? It was running for 30 seconds then turned off, ran for another 30 seconds turned off again and again and now I have no engine light and my bike won't start.. 🤔🙄🤗🤔 I checked the fuses, changed the spark plugs, but still no engine light.?.?.?.?.

Hey jc rubin let me start out by saying ur videos are extremely helpful to me. I'm a car mechanic but learning about bikes and I have a v star 650 and my starter clutch went bad but can't seem to find any video on how to remove it. I've look at ur video of valve adjustment to get an idea but don't really know if lining up the back cylinder will line up the front one so I can remove the starter clutch. Is there anything ypu could pass along for some helpful hints. Thanks Jimmy

Possibly a stupid question. But should the oil be drained before doing valve adjustments? Or do an oil change after? I’m due to do both.
@retrotechandelectronics

No, an oil change is not required for this undertaking. But if you are due, then why not.

Once I got my front cylinder aligned, I checked front it is off by 12 teeth. So, how would I get sprocket point aligned. Do I loosen timing and turn sprocket to align with notch.

Hi... I like to send a video that I have to you for my 2014 Yamaha V-Star 250 so I can get some input of what she is doing ( her name is Wonda). See... by mistake, the engine ran really low on oil and did not see the level well due to the visual window on the side of the engine being cloudy. Now I have added the 1.5 quarts of oil in place, she runs good idling, but when giving her gas she runs really rough with a knocking sounds coming from the cylinder head next to the front tire from the sounds of it. Any input?

Having a unique problem with my 02 star 650. Cleaned and jetted my carbs and now when the bike is cold it starts and runs fine riding. When it warms up my idle sticks badly. I put it in neutral and the idle drops back to normal. Put it in gear and take off and it happens again. The hand grip snaps back like it should but it acts like I have it cranked wide open. Searched and talked to everyone I know with no luck. Ideas? I really need help!

Excellent video but doing this has stopped my bike running. Firstly I had oil leaking from two tappet covers and lots of white smoke shooting out these exhaust manifolds. After changing the O-rings and thread-locking the covers closed it seems to have stopped the leaking but I'm getting a lot of backfiring and barely any power on acceleration. Could there be any quick fixes?
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 4 года назад
Did you measure or adjust??? If no adjust, it could be your carbs manifold is leaking air. If you did adjust, recheck and make sure the positions didn't shift.

@@retrotechandelectronics I tightened 3. One thing I noticed is that the front cylinder cam sprocket is about 2 -2 1/2 links misaligned with the sight glass notch. Could this be a problem? Thanks for the reply

What was the reason for removing the spark plugs? THe previous owner of my bike crossthreaded on of the plugs, I was able to get it to go in straight but now I"m scared to change them.
@retrotechandelectronics

Without the plugs the engine can be rotated into the correct positions with ease.

Hi @Retro Tech & Electronics, hope your doing well. Hey, I am trying to adjust the valves as per your instructions but I noticed the bike I am working on does not perfectly aligns whether on the "I", the "T I", and consequently not on the sprockets marks neither. Do you have any videos showing how to fix that? Thanks in advance.
@retrotechandelectronics
@retrotechandelectronics 3 года назад
Mine does not align on the sprocket perfectly exactly either. The mark on the sprocket is not my indicator for the correct position.
@kenwittlief255
@kenwittlief255 3 года назад
the sprocket on the cam is connected to the sprocket on the crankshaft by the timing chain. As the chain wears over time the two marks will slightly drift apart the one on the cam shaft is the one that shows you where the cam is exactly. But for setting the valves the one on the crank shaft is close enough. After you have done this once you dont need to pull the cover off the cam shaft sprocket, just go by the crank shaft marks and make sure you are on the correct revolution of the crank by verifying the slight freeplay (tap) on the valve. If there is no freeplay and you can see the rocker move when you turn the crank shaft then you have to go around another 360°. This saves time and the need to replace the o rings on the cam sprocket covers.

@@kenwittlief255 thanks Ken. It is just that I am trying to bring back to life a friend's of mine V star 650 but I am trying to figure out how bad it is. The punch marks on the cylinder head sprockets doesn't align with the fixed marks (cylinder 1 is about 2 inches away, and cylinder 2 is about 1/8 away from the fixed mark), the timing chain doesn't seem to be damaged but I haven't disassembled the strator to see the crankshaft sprocket condition. I noticed the valves and the pistons have a lot of carbon build up, so I am trying to use some fuel system cleaner and see how it goes before having to disassemble the engine for an exhaustive cleaning and fix anything that pops up. The bike was working 'ok' but it has been sitting for about 2 years. Fuel pump not working and already replaced. Overall symptoms are bike cranks and stay running in idle, but when throttle is applied it looses power and it eventually stalls. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks
@kenwittlief255
@kenwittlief255 3 года назад
@@emilesp01 Sorry for the delay, just saw this. If the timing mark on the cam gear is 2" away from being aligned with the timing mark on the crank shaft, then that cam is way out of time with the crankshaft. That could happen if the chain tensioner has failed and the chain slipped - esp if someone pushed the bike backwards in gear, or rotated the crank shaft the wrong way with a wrench. The crank shaft spins in the opposite direction from the wheels on the 650 and 1100. Another way it could be off is if someone took off the starter and starter clutch and let the timing chain move on the cam, or had the cam off the head... With the one cam timing mark off by two inches there is no way that cylinder is firing. If the bike was running like this it was only running on the other cylinder, and it would bog down and run terribly. But having the engine bog when the throttle is open could also be gummed up jets in the carb - there are 3 passages for fuel: the "choke" enrichment jet, the pilot jet and the main jet. The main jet doesnt open till the throttle is open half way, so the engine could run ok in some throttle positions but not in others if one of the jets is plugged. But you have to resolve that cam shaft position issue first. With it that far off I am surprised the piston did not hit the open valves - maybe it did!

@@kenwittlief255 that's great info Ken, thanks a lot. I am not sure how bike was maintained (possibly not well maintained), but my friend used the bike for a couple of years and he had a couple long trips on it so I guess the assumption is bike was sometime rebuilt and possibly they didn't align the gears properly. At this point, all of your comments makes total sense, I see a lot of carbon deposits very likely caused by the very issues you described. Also, I see one cylinder covered in oil while the other is 'cleaner', along with the exhausts showing those burnt spots when the system overheats just as you also described. I'll try to fix the timing and I'll share an update here later on. Thanks for your help Ken, really appreciate it. I'll try to contact you again if that's ok.
