Yamaha SW-P201 subwoofer repair - STK audio amplifier replacement 

Sorin, I'm 62 and I worked in several electronic companies. I tried *really hard* to work as they needed, following protocols (mostly DUMBly written) that HAVE TO BE followed line by line. I've found this the MOST USELESS THING I tried to do in my whole life and more of all give an underline of sadness lifetime. Now I'm working at home repairing things just as you do, to friends and all the others. My electronic experience BOOSTED right the moment I start my job at home when I've seen your channel and your story... Now I can say that I'm earning way less than before, but I knew how one can enjoy going to work (actually an attic and now is almost 38°C since I live in south Italy). You showed me the right way (for me) to face these electronic repair problems, TURNING ON my mind. Ok, the experience can be EXPENSIVE, especially with some clients, but I've learnt more in these few years, than in 30 years working in a plant. Thanks, Sorin

Don't change. You are showing different path of repair. Not everything must be the same. Nowadays we have recipe for everything how to look how to talk what to do and everyone try to be the same. Without people like you there woudn't be any variety in youtube elecotrnic repair content.

Troubleshoot and replace a faulty part is for everyone with a little knowledge of electronics, otherwise repair a laptop with one wire, without schematics and piss on the electronic engineering design is a masterpiece of art. I'm always wait next video to learn, thanks.

Sorin is an awesome - person, teacher, Advisor, and Expert who's knowledge goes well beyond most of us and probably even beyond those who are designing electronic circuits. those who call him doggy probably have no idea whats really going on in the circuit he is repairing. his knowledge is an advantage not a disadvantage, in many cases his repairs are more reliable than the original circuit design because of his knowledge. to say otherwise is simply an expression of your lack of knowledge and understanding of electronics. No doubt in my mind how impressive Sorin is who's only goal is to improve our understanding of life and electronics.

Breaking bad was the best real life lesson series i have ever seen.

It is not dodgy. Its about knowing what your doing. You have to calculate the risk much more when you modyfies things. This job is on the same level with changing tires on your car. I love you to come back with a litle more advanced repair. :)

You are honest and reputable which are antonyms of dodgy. Most anyone can replace "parts" until the problem is resolved, but a troubleshooting wizard approaches from a different prospective. I prefer your approach. Thanks for showing how to trace down the exact dodgy component, rather than chunking the whole speaker or replacing every component on the blasted contraption until it is resuscitated.

Your style is what makes you a king here, and it also helps people who won't always have every part and money to replace it. The dodgy way saved me many times from spending money I didn't have, and taught me electronics as well. Plus your videos are the real deal, not just replacing entire boards and looking at schematics.

Been following your channel for a while now, i used to own a repair shop but sold the shop in 2015. Have recently got into microsoldering and repairs again. Thanks for the inspiration.

Ther funny thing is, that i enjoy more the dodgy style of work than the perfect one. This is a different approach on how to do repairs, sometimes more easy, or even creative ways! Thank you again for your work and time Sorin!

Thanks Sorin, I just have exactly the same fault on the same unit I received yesterday. I found this video accidently while looking for the schematic online. I suspected the STK and thanks to this video, I now know that I can order without wasting time and money. I'm doing work like this from home in my garage. I'm 67 and enjoying every challenge. To all you young guys out there, one thing you can't teach is experience.

STK audio its gone no audio that's its problems sorin its be fixed I now best repair man and the best teacher for electronic.

i love your repairs in the past there was no ebay or network. parts had to come to you via many detours. and what is important that it then works and works. The boys of today don't know how nice a tube radio smelled or the televisions all had that electronic smell. am now 60 years old and like the old school of being able to fix sorin and am still learning from you and thank you very much for your videos greatings from Andreas

Sorin, i have replaced so many sdk/sanken modules over the past 30 years. There is often no reason for there failure, Other that being under rated and poor heatsink. There is the right way and the Sorin way lol (leg pulling). Your school works, it gets us thinking :-D.

Hey Sorin, I just gave the previous month my sub to a technician as it had an erratic sound, awfully loud and it would not be controlled even from the volume control. Never had the chance to open it and test it. What do you think might be the case? I can still take it back since he hasn't been working on it yet ;)

What I use to do to find out if the IC amplifier is faulty is probing the input sound signal with another amplifier and if find that the sound reaches the IC input it means it´s faulty, now I can do both an be two times sure about the fault, because those chips aren't cheap and an error on the diagnostic can cost a lot.

I have a no sound issue, replaced the STK 412-150, it didn't help. What would cause missing negative voltage on transistor collector that goes to pre amp pin? Negative voltage present on both emitter & base. 🤔 Sony ZX66i. Everything works (almost).

Reading the title and knowing Sorin, I really expected that you would just take out the sub amp board and then replace it with a generic eBay class D amplifier board. But time is money as well, so, this is probably cheaper, in total. Factoring in connecting everything up, maybe a pre-amp and/or power supply modification is needed for that class-D-board. So, good repair call, boring fix. Nice work!

Dumb question about the zener diode: wasn't it protecting from dodgy power supplies, the ones that could sometimes pass high voltage (220V) if you shake them the right way, or put them in high humidity environment?
