Dom Sigalas takes a look at the Yamaha VP1, a very rare polyphonic physical modelling synthesizer.
Released in 1994, the 73-key instrument specialized in physical models of strings and offered a 16 voice polyphony. In order to achieve the necessary calculation power, the synthesizer made use of several dedicated chips and signal processors. This resulted in a steep retail price, and only a small quantity was produced, possibly between 20 to 30 units.
Synth Space History features demos of historic Yamaha Synths and Stage instruments.

Something like this would have so much potential today. Software like Pianoteq is evidence of how advanced and realistic physical modeling synthesis has become. Put something like that in hardware with advanced controls, and I'm sure it would be popular.

The most unique sounding Yamaha synth, I loved it when it came out. Was lucky to have a play on one in Bristol many years back.

I enjoyed your performances in this video and the one for the vl-1. Both were great and I think are indicative of the direction that synthesis is headed.

This synthesis needs to be added to the Montage IMMEDIATELY! Yamaha, don't forget us! I mean, come on... It is ridiculous that this modeling has been totally disregarded. Easysounds could provide a Library.... perhaps ???

I like this series of demos of vintage Yamaha keyboards/syths so much. Hope to see/hear many more. Possibly you could also add demos of older Yamaha arranger keyboards and organs.

one of our in-house musicians (when we still had them) acquired this machine in 1995 for the what was then the financial equivalent of a luxurious mid-size car. it was moved into storage with our other audio equipment in the late 90s and written off after a fire.

Baffling that Yamaha developed this technology and then… dumped it? Where is the VL engine for today’s flagship synths?

The VL model lived on in various modules and daughter boards for other synths, but the VP model never really made it out into the public at all - surely it should be possible to make the VP available now in some more or less affordable way, over 20 years down the line ??

They had it at Sam Ash NYC back in the 90s, I came there to check something else, but spent hours with VP1, really liked it and actually expected more of this kind of synthesis to come. Never happened :( Yeah, I remember a lot of those sounds, especially that percussion!

It truly is the missing tech on my wish-list. They had the poly VL engine in software decades ago and it is just begging to be rereleased as a modern plugin. Even an iPad would run that engine with no trouble. I do have a VL sound card but it is very noisy and only works on windows 98.

The Korg Z1 has the edit functions, too bad the VP1 hasn't. But I think the VP1 sounds more sophisticated, than the Z1. Still the Z1 gets the most easy VA programmability.

btw: Reinhold Heil hat damals den VP1 in der Fachzeitschrift "Keys" (CD-Rom) großartig vorgestellt.
@dragonflycrashed5511
@dragonflycrashed5511 Год назад

How does the modelling compare with the Kurzweil “sound contour modelling” I wonder? I *think* K250 used data points taken from sound samples that ‘informed’ how the sound developed… kind of a model of the dynamics that controlled how heavily compressed samples were played. Does the VP1 model everything (absolutely no data taken from samples, or is it like Yamaha’s version of Kurzweil’s sound contour modelling?
@Javelin276
@Javelin276 Год назад
The VP1 uses an input pulse to initiate the vibration in the string model. There are 75 different multi-pitch input pulses to select from in the Editor, these might have been sampled. They don't sound anything like the instruments they're named after, they are a four-cycle wave form. I would liken it to a 2 dimensional wave table, 5 x 75 elements.

This was considered the Rolls-Royce of synthesizers (for a short while) when it came out. DSP was the shit then. I wonder why nobody invented a deep learning AI synth yet. It could emulate 100 per cent every keyboard ever built.

Yamaha’s biggest mistake is not putting this sound engine in the new Montage and that’s why I’m probably done with Yamaha until next release. AN-X is OK, but I have plenty of VA synths, so to spend 5.000€ on a new hardware I need something new and New Montage doesn’t provide anything new. AWM2 is still the main sound engine, but I’m not interested in samples VP1 and VL1 are something the best Yamaha ever made and it was ahead of its time and probably that’s why it wasn’t successful. But now with new technologies Yamaha is one of rare developers that could make a proper physical modeling synth with new technology improvements and the best place to put it in would be the new flagship workstation. I’m hardly waiting for Korg’s successor of Kronos, they’ve made plenty of good synths in recent years comparing to Yamaha who’s synth department is sleeping. And I understand it. For Yamaha synthesizers are not priority in last 25 years, because even if Yamaha stops with synth production it can survive, because Yamaha is making plenty of the other instruments (pianos, violins, guitars, drums etc), motorbikes, engines etc you name it. On the other side Korg and Roland can’t afford themselves this kind of luxury and that’s why they are developing synths, without synths they don’t exist. And as a synth player I’m gonna choose the one who offers more for the money. But it’s a pity, because I used to be whuge Yamaha fan. I’m still using Yamaha arrangers and Cubase, but I wished a good Yamaha workstation synthesizer with more synth engines like it was EX5 25 years ago. I hope with new workstation in 2030 Yamaha will offer more improvements.

This seems to be the last weapon yamaha can pull out, if all the ideas are sold out they still have a trump card to put on the table, if anything else does not help, the VP1 can might be the fast way out of you stuck in a one way street. There is the question existing for many years in Synthesizer development, what comes next? Noone could answer. Nö Nobody expected that the analog synthesizers would return in the 80ties, and out of despiration the manufacturers have equipped their devices with massive technical data, more voices more effects more sample RAM more more more. More selfplaying possiblities etc. But why does yamaha release this video here?

Dom, sorry for maybe stupid question under seriously nice movie, but I loved so much your tutorials about Yamaha... Maybe you find this funny, so, let me ask for stupid idea - how to create such sound like in this movie? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uDrdZM1iGrc.html - simply annoying but kind of funny.
