Hello! Thank you for your effort on comparing the two bikes. I have my F900XR since 3 years now, I did 11000 kilometers with it, and I have been listening to many reviews and comparisons to T9 since I decided to switch to one of them. I have had a strong dillema on which to choose and compared all pros and cons I learned from the reviews and articles, to help me make my decission and I have to say, that all the coparisons are highly incomplete, inacurate and strongly subjective which makes a lot of confusion. There are many small factors missed out whereas some mentioned ‘facts’ are repeated and pointed out although they highly depend on personal experience and skill level and should not be taken seriously. As a F9XR owner I would like to share my experience with you and enrich the review with some detailed additions. In short I can say: The T9 drive feels more impetuous and impulsive than the F9XR. If performance and adrenaline is what you are looking for in this segment, pick the T9. It is more lively and thus a little faster. If you look for a predictable and refined bike that does not surprize you much, yet is still very fast, pick the F9XR. The F9XR is more balanced whereas the T9 is a bit more sporty. All other features are very simmilar on both with pros and cons for each depending on your needs and bike use. The differences are minimal, but the minor things may change your mind! The ergonomics is strongly subjective! You should put your @$$ on each and experience the fit before making the decission. All the details about pegs position, back position, windshield and the looks etc. are worthless in my opinion as they will do differently on each person. In long: I like my F9XR for: - predictable and balanced ride experience. Its easy to ride, gives much more confidence and a feeling of safety. In corners it is super stable, and it does not lean too easily - you need to put more effort to lean low, compared to T9, which gives me the feeling of better control and stability of every degree I want to go. If I am not willing to make a fast-pace cornering, it just gently flows through the corner perfectly. I expect that feel from a sport-tourer bike, and so does my passanger, when we go through mountain twisties with full bags on. The basic version is equipped with steering damper, hidden under the fairing. It is still very fast and nible, you will only see the displayed speed on the display and I enjoy the track days with it from time to time. - having the carry capacity of 100% of its own weight, which is 220kg! Off course I can addjust the rear suspention to these needs. I cannot set the front forks, but I have never felt that I needed to. - the braking performance. The brakes are razorsharp when needed, but the engine-brake suport is very strong and enough in many cases so I can easily operate with throttle position only in most road sections (off course not in every case!). - the display, information it gives and the reliability of any BT connection. The bike is a HUB for all my devices: phone, two intercoms and a separate GPS which I do not use. They just connect flawlessly with no issues at all - I just sit on, turn all devices on, wait a few seconds and it just works - turnOn&go. The menu in the TFT display is very intuitive and clear. Aside from the obvious information it shows me directions from my Connected app navigation with names, arrows, distance, lane positions and voice info, so I can actually keep my phone in the jacket. This is very useful on short rides in places you don’t know e.g. quick ride to a shop or a gas station in an unknown area - quick jump on and go. I can easily add any POI on my route or near it or modify the stops of my route within seconds. I also know the tire pressure from the sensors. The access to all bike information I can possibly need or make a call during a ride is within 2-4 clicks with one manipulator. Selecting music is also easy, but I recommend to stop in this case… rarely ride after dark. I also like that the display gives me information, and does not look at me... The rev-light in the display is very useful, and its intensity can also be changed to one’s preference. - fuel consumption. My best minimum is 4.1L/100km. My standard one day road trip with all kinds of roads included is 4.2. This gives me the range of 350-400km with bags on but I never reach it, as my collegues (MT-09, 600 Fazer and 1050 Sprint) are usually out of fuel by then, so we go for refuel. I do not calculate the consumption on the track. - agility. The bike is narrow and compact and handles in the city very lightly. It does not surprise me with instant gravitation increase when I make a quick dodge between cars, it just flows only and as much as I need to. The indicators are not wider than the fairing, so I won’t lose them instantly If I accidently drop the bike at the gas station ;). - the lights. When I come back in the evening, the lights switch automatically. The LEDs provide much visibility and the additional corner lights can be useful, yet I rarely ride after dark. - the ground clearance. The bike is clearly designed for asphalt off course. It handles light off-road in the forest well enough to reach some nice viewpoints, lakes etc.. But the most important for me is that it is ready to face some rough terrain, unexpected holes and road curbs when I decide and force it to go. I do not fear of losing collectors, engine or fairings when passing a curb or overcoming an unexpected road hazard. - feedback and engine sound (I hear the engine when I ride, not the exhaust) when I accelerate, especially when going 3k+ RPMs. I also love how the bike feels and gives feedback of everything I input. I love how the pegs, brake and clutch levers tell me what exactly is going on and how the engine gently trembles. - maintenance/service costs. Many opinions say by default that the maintenance costs are very high but how can you tell... I only go for a maintenance once a year due to warranty (I would have done so nevertheless) so three now. I compared my prices with my collegue’s MT-09 (dealership only) and the intervals and the prices (final, not catalog) are pretty the same (+/- 10%). I confirm though that post-buy, original accessories are more expensive than for Yamaha by +~15%. The insurance is the same as for MT-09 so probably the T9 is the same. For winter time I just clean the bike, plug the charger to a (factory equipped) socket and literally wait for summer. Very convenient. - keyless access and SOS call system. It is a goodie to have, as it makes the riding more carefree. Optional, but I have never had issues with the key or starting the bike at all. I don’t like my F9XR for: - the seat. It is fine for a track, acceptable for the amount of few-days trips I make (2-5 in a year), but up to 1,5/2 hours of a ride between intervals. My passenger says it is terrible… I am to switch to an accessory comfort seat. - the quickshifter. It could be better, smoother. There is many different feedback on the BMW’s quickshifter. In my opinion, it could have been better. - the engine sound on idle. It is kinda clunky when I stop and wait for the lights. I can live with that, but ehhh... - the prices for accessories. The original and dedicated brands are quite expensive. I can go for some cheaper substitudes. - heat blower. When it is hot, the fan blows the air on your left leg. For me it is not a problem at all, as I do not live in hot climate, but you will feel it from time to time, if you live under the sun. You should check if it is a problem for you before buying! Thanks and cheers from Poland!

Hi, great review! Stumbled over this comparison right now, as I am just deciding on whether buying the 2025 F900XR… There is one issue for me which is crucial, as I am not the driver with sport ambitions but like comfort and touring. I would anyway buy an aftermarket comfort seat so that will not be an issue. But there are lot of reviews with mixed opinions on the suspension, many saying it is too stiff and uncomfortable. What is your experience please? I would order the ESA electronic suspension, what have you got?

@@Peter-wm3zw I've owned the Gold F900XR since 2020 and just bought a Corbin touring seat for it this year, I have 26,000+km on it now. The original low profile seat was very stiff, I got it extra padding in 2023 but it still wasn't that great, so the Corbin so far I have just over a 1000km on it now and it is way better as it's a saddle type seat. I am 5'7" and 170lbs. The biggest difference I think in this review that is missing is that he didn't put the bike into dynamic more or have the USB adder to put it into sport mode (which I have), which allows dynamic ABS and sport tuning on the motor. I would bet that it puts it closer to the T9 for performance if he had it installed at the time of his review. I have full cases and am still having a blast with it. I have changed tyres on it now three times, with Continental TKC 70 Adventure on it from August 2021- October 2023 and now Dunlop Mutant's for this season. Hope that helps in your choice, look at cost of ownership overall and have a blast, ride safe!

In the day to day and long trips the connectivity is very useful. The bmw also has the sos call. They are similar motorcycles after each one chooses according to the use they intend to give.

Looking for a new bike that's the holy grail between my last two bikes, a BMW r1100gs (heavy, everything is a chore, but torque in every gear and i took it on a 4000km trip with ease, and very good ergonomics) and a Kawasaki Versys 650 (a fun and nimble bike that magically turns into a naked when you take the windscreen off, could use and extra 15hp though). Just bought the F900XR, and also compared in to the T9. I think a lot of RU-vid-Reviewers (pro Riders) like the T9 due to the stronger motor. But they just do a short review and do not need to use this bike actually for weeks and months. For me the F900 is straight the better bike as a Sports-Tourer because -105 HP are enough (if you want a powerful motor why not go for a more sports oriented bike) - handling is better (as its lower) - better display and connectivity including things like tire pressure control - its the MUCH more beautiful bike Further for me personally I got a nice offer at my local BMW dealer, and that wasnt possible at Yamaha. PS: the F900 XR you showed in this review has a modified exhaust.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 2 года назад
It's a fact that so many things can be personal as we all have an emotional approach to things, especially in regard ot emotional items like motorcycles. The power thing could be left alone, however, since those are two super direct competitors with pretty much the same engine displacement and base price, it's hard to overlook that Tracer makes a fantastic use of surprisingly few HP more. Display and connectivity may be class-leading across all the segments for BMW - right. The look is a 100% personal thing and I understand that there are things about the Tracer that may put people off. I hate the "closed eye"/one light on design of the Tracer and that could bother me, so I get it. About the exhaust, this is a factory bike straight from a dealer and this exhaust is a factory option. Totally not worth it as it definitely doesn't sound like any kind of "normal" aftermarket exhaust. Funny thing is that the same thing happened with Ducati Multistrada V4 that came with an "accessory exhaust" and didn't sound at all. Pity. I've got no idea why they put those "aftermarket company" logos on such exhausts..

I own a Triumph Tiger Sport 660 and looking for something bigger and stronger. I saw tons of videos on YT about the Tracer and F900xr and heard lots of complaints about the display on Tracer. As I’m wearing reading glasses I was pretty much sure I wouldn’t want it just because of the small 2x3,5” dashes. Then I test rode the Tracer and I realized that it’s by far not so bad as I expected. Yes it’s still quite small and the tiny letters and a joke, but I made all the settings before the ride and didn’t have to play around with it while riding. The riding modes are easy to change with one button if necessary during the ride. The left dashboard shows all the most important information I need to see during the ride, which is speed, selected gear and the rpm. And these is perfectly visible . This changed my opinion on Tracer and I’m seriously considering buying it. I just want to test ride the f900xr as well and compare the riding position and performance of both bikes. Then I make a decision. Btw. I love you reviews, keep up the great work 👍

The difference in power between those two bikes is insignificant, i watched videos of dyno tests of stock versions of these exact bikes. The Tracer clocked 105 RWHP, whereas the BMW actually made 100 (or 101) RWHP. I definitely disagree with the multiple comments saying the Yamaha is a lot more powerful bike. This simply is not true. It's just a tradition for BMW to put closer to the real figures when it comes to engine performance, which is actually admirable.

Ah yes, BMW may be charging premium for their service and if you're stuck with that because of a warranty, this may hurt. The additional tank capacity on the Tracer is offset by the fact that the fuel consumption is about 1L per 100km more, not to mention that the Tracer requires a premium fuel grade whereas the XR is happy to run on standard grade unleaded. I think the XR could be regarded a better bike for a more conservative or “sensible” rider, and the Tracer a better bike for someone who wants a reasonably practical bike that they can also have a blast on.

I have always thought a bike is an object of passion at 360°. A good bike for me should fit well my riding needs, daily and whan I want to travel. But... I want to feel satisfied every time I see it before riding on. Does anybody has anything to say about the look of the Yamaha??? Many things about a bike end to be subjective, otherwise we would ride all the same one. So, in my opinion the 900xr is a very stilish bike and unfortunately at Yamaha (for many reason a great bike at a good price) they seem to have cared about the look of the bike at end of the project, just not to put on the market a pure mechanical product, as it was a motor saw.

So, I signed up to a number of forums and joined many groups on facebook. It turned out that some riders struggle with issues no matter the brand. Some complain abut Yamaha, others about Triumph, Suzuki, BMW GS 1250 and the famous africa twin (sometimes DCT doesn't work as it should). So, all in all, I though: there are no perfect bikes - sooner or later some problems will come up. As a result I went for bmw f750 gs, 2 seasons behind me, no issues whatsoever. But just in case... I believe it's due to historical and a weird understanding of design by Japanese. Another thing may be a saving which I somehow don't believe could be a real issue as it could easily be countered by saying "what if that one and only one light bulb (which isn't even a light bulb anymore but an LED in many cases like here) dies?". Then you're suddenly left with no light at all. Imagine that this happens at night. Having to sources of light lets a rider "survive" that while having only one catches them totally off guard. So if we'd want to dig deeply into it, I'd touch this topic too as a lack of safety precaution. I don't believe that there's one good explanation for this solution. What you may do, you may keep the high beam on at all times if you ride in the city. You'll be safer and the bike will look OK.

That pirate`s front light concept of the GT would totally kill my intention of buying this Yamaha tracer. It doesn’t make any sense to me. On the other hand, if I were to buy this kind of bike I would rather go up a little and buy the BMW XR 1000. In conclusion, these seem both, little street- touring bikes, good for commuting from the periphery’s to an urban centre, to ride it in there, but just for that purpose. And if the ame is that kind of use I still would prefer the BMW, as the engine performance with be a secondary asset to have. Other items come first, Wind protection, comfort, and so on. Thanks V-Told for one more excellent review.

@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing this. The heated seat is a great addition, I really like that they offer it for a Tracer. Respect to Yamaha for that. The seat and windshield topic is kind of irritating to me as they seem to have installed faulty items just to then convince us to pay for the right, "properly working" ones. Still, these are small things. I know an instance of a manufacturer that by default installs "just" brakes in one of their motorcycles and at the same time they offer a version with "better"/"upgraded" brakes. Now that's a nice one right? It's about Ducati and their Multistrada V4 (no brakes) and Multistrada V4S (brakes).

You have been riding the Tracer in the lower seat position, maybe too low for your height. Pegs were in lower position from what I saw with one hole above the peg.

The single headlight is for your safety. In the dark, two headlights close together, relatively high above the ground, is likely a car far away, so the car that's looking at you thinks he can pull up safely. This case, however, it was you, with your cool double headlight, close by. So the Car pulls up in front of you and sends you flying. A single headlight is probably a motorcycle, so this will likely be taken in consideration by the vehicledriver that wants to pull up in front of you on that dark road.

@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 2 года назад
I've heard that one before. If anyone in the dark can see separate lights of a motorcycle shining in their eyes, then either these lamps are 100 years old and barely work being so dimmed or they're not exactly telling the truth I believe. If I've got an incoming car or a motorcycle, first of all I don't stare directly into its lights as that would blind anyone no matter what they do. It's one of the basic night time driving rules. Second of all, the differences in brightness are so large that telling how many light points are there, would still be a huge challenge at any serious distance I believe. In the city it usually may be bright enough to tell what's coming. Anyway, this doesn't apply to riders like myself who avoid riding at night. I guess that even if that was the real reason and a true danger, I'd still prefer to have two lamps and see what's ahead of me on the streets rather than struggle with one lamp only.

If I may, then I totally wouldn't care about the displacement or a power of a motorcycle. Having traction control in most new bikes along with ABS, one really would have to try very hard to cause trouble for themselves. Over the speed we ride with, we always have full control and none of us needs to ride 200 km/h all the time. As for being experienced or not, it's much more about the weight of a bike and a position that you've got on it. I'd feel handicapped on any chopper despite riding since I was a little boy. A bike that's easy to handle and helps you instead of making it hard to control is one that will be safer for any of us. The second thing is the weight alone for when you're stationary, stopping or setting off - then it will matter too. But also along with the height and center of gravity. So all in all, it's not as simple as being limited to displacement or power I believe.

I personally wouldn't choose F900XR even though I usually prefer 2-cylinder engines to anything with more cylinders. The thing is that those 3-cylinder engines sometimes provide a pretty good blend of torque and smoothness and it's also the case of a Tracer 9. To me it doesn't lack torque but overall feels more responsive than F900XR regardless of RPM. I was definitely more happy riding a Tracer 9 comparing to F900XR. Coming from a Versys 650 which you mention is significantly less powerful, likely BMW and Yamaha will feel like a decent upgrade. To ma Tracer also just feels better on the road while BMW feels like a more high-quality bike. I hope that this helps.

Unfortunately I find the Tracer quite horrible and all sold until july without any possibilità to try one (I can't even see one in Milan Yamaha dealers!) on the other hand the BMW is very stylish... About the jumpy rear suspension of the 900Xr have you thought about to a much softer regulation?
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 2 года назад
I don't think that any possible change of suspension settings would impact the XR's behavior enough to fix the mentioned way of its reactions to bumps etc. Sounds like a close call for you! I hope you'll choose the one that suits you best as a whole package.

@@VToldsMotoShow I finally tried out the bmw f9000xr, and even if I am not a pro tester I've been driving two wheels for 41 years and had and tried many different bikes. I tested quite hard the criticized front and rear suspension of the bmw f900xr and I found them not too bad at all, not too soft not too hard, a right bilance for different situations you will find, and in comparison of other sport tourers, with the exception of the fantastic ones skyhook semiactive of the Ducati V2. We faced quite well for ages the streets of the world with suspension without electronics and still today most of the the bikes are like this. I have also to say that you can change the parameters if the rear suspension of the f900xr from a map depending on the load you put on the bike. I would like almost mechanical regulation on the forks, to have a indisputable set of suspension on yhe f900xr... but I find the set they put is ok for me, and on top of this as we all know, the 90% of the riders don't even have a clue how to regulate them without making a bad mess. Good bike everyone. 👍

Clearly there is an unused boss above footpeg mount in photo indicating the footpegs are indeed already in the low position unless I am grossly mistaken. However obviously in the photos the seat is in the lower not higher position would no doubt affect the footpegs height relative to your butt. BTW the reason the Tracer is harder to shift? It has the shortest shift lever I have ever seen on a motorcycle! The previous generation Tracer 900 had a much longer lever but then Yamaha made a new frame repositioning the motor forward and rotated further forward/downward so I guess they were forced to flip the entire shift linkage around backwards on T9gt ....it hurts my toes to upshift! I need steel toed boots now I think
@VToldsMotoShow

they only have 10hp difference which is in the high rpm range and bmw has its usable torque lower...i have ridden both and f900xr for the 80% of the rides feels quicker!! Lol what The Tracer's CP3 blows the BMW out of the water, its not even a contest CP3 is not only much MUCH smoother, it also has good low end grunt (not as good as the BMW obviously). I did a dragrace against my friends XR. 3rd gear 3k RPM, he pulled away for maybe 1 second. As soon as i hit 6k RPM i overtook him and then his bike ran out of juice, mine was just getting started. What BMW has that the Tracer does not is shorter maintenance intervals and less reliability. That's part that most reviewers skip over.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 2 года назад
Right, I skipped that too as in fact those aren't priorities for me personally in a motorcycle. Reliability would be more important to me in a car that I'd use every day - if I were driving a lot - but in a bike, unless it's known to cause trouble and that would bother my mind before jumping on it, then I really would not think about it much. Though I understand that those types of motorcycles may be used heavily for longer travels every day and then it may make a difference. Thanks for mentioning it.

BMW is using chinese engine in all 900 model range, which is not good. Add up cheap suspension and appearance. Not good at all. Contrary, Y Tracer 9 and especially T9GT is better built, more powerful , better suspended (Showa) and better performing and better looking bike. Period.

I think I can agree with most of the comparison part. Visually however, I'd put BMW at a better spot in terms of build quality. This doesn't concern reliability which I'm not familiar with in the case of F900XR and so cannot comment on it.

Great comparison, can you tell me which bike have a better clutch feel? I think that F 900 XR doesn't have a clutch assist (even for that price?!), but Tracer does.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 2 года назад
I'm not sure what the clutch assist could be but Tracer has a bit of an issue with its clutch. I mean that I was constantly unable to set off without making the bike behave like it wanted to choke itself - making a weird noise and vibrating pretty much every single time. I think it's a flaw that should be corrected. It thankfully isn't a big deal to live with and it only annoys if you pay attention to it. I believe that at some point you just get used to it and it's not an issue anymore. Still, I'd say that there's a point for BMW in this department.
