In this video there are two Yamaha TX7's and two OPL3 synthesizers. No audio effects were used in the mix. The song is clouds.mid which is from a Windows 95 easter egg (a hidden feature). One laptop is running a midi sequencer with the Voyetra super sapi patch set (drums, crystal patch). The other laptop is running the Symphonix FM Editor with a custom patch bank (bass). Everything else is done with the TX7's.

This is my favorite version of Clouds.mid on RU-vid. Great use of FM!

I look at this video and suddenly, it feels like I'm back in 1994. Wow, the nostalgia as a child is overwhelming!

"And so the hero returned to their homeland, the balance of the universe had been restored and everything was made right once more. The End." _Credits roll_ Beautiful version

Yamaha's sound chips like in Adlib and the Sega Genesis kinda take after the DX7. So, it makes sense to play them all together like this. ^w^ I've often thought about how the song, Steppin' Out, would sound in OPL3 synth. I think it'd translate fairly well.

@SouthwesternEagle They were close, but not identical. The SEGA Genesis used a YM2612. It was an Operator Type N. These are Operator Type L based chips. But they do sound similar, and I believe they take the same sound bank data.

@Eep386 Yeah, the bells were done on the opl3. The TX-7 only has six sine wave operators. You can modulate these operators to create a sawtooth wave. I don't care for the OPL3's saw wave by itself either, but it can be used to modulate other operators to create cool sounds.

@rockerzac99 The laptops contain the OPL3 chip on their soundcards. An OPL3 chip can be found in almost every soundcard from the mid 90's.

@rockerzac99 You can buy an OPL3 laptop very cheaply on ebay, which is where I bought the two in the video. Usually if a PC laptop that is a Pentium II or under has sound capabilities it will also have the OPL3.

@rockerzac99 No, I don't think that IBM laptop used the OPL3 chip. Most of those laptops used the Mwave DSP which was IBM's own soundcard. The Mwave didn't use the Yamaha OPL3.

WOW! What a good stuff! I really liked this, I'm a big fan of OPL-3 synthesizers sound cards. :) Man, please help me. I've an old computer with Sound Blaster 16 installed. I want to use this computer as a MIDI instrument, like you have done here. The Symphonix FM Editor can allows a MIDI controller (like a sequencer, a midi keyboard or even another computer with DAW or a tracker software) to control an OPL3 synthesizer embedded on a Sound Card? Thank you, and sorry me for the asking so much!

This is identical synthesis to the sound of the Sega Genesis. I believe they used the same chip.

@Doommaster1994 I made an annotation showing the link since RU-vid doesn't allow url's to be entered into comments.
