Ok I will tell every body how to do this job. First you DO NOT have to take the engine out to do this job. Leave it in the motorcycle. Undo the head studs like you are going to take the head off. Then go and buy a stud extractor or use two bolts locked against each other to take the long engine studs out. You can then take the head off and the barrels off. Change your piston rings and put it all back together again. It's easy and we do this job in our Yamaha agent work shop all the time.

Just a heads up , when taking out the bottom gasket Hold the chain with one hand and put the other hand in the gasket and open youre hand it brings it up alot easier

i never heard of rings going bad on a vstar 650, the cylinders have ceramic composite coating on them from the factory, they should go well over 150,000 easily before needing service
whats the compression numbers before and after, i may do mine next year, in the clymer manual i have it says to hone the cylinders did you do that yourself or send them out for the honing, honing breaks the glaze from the cylinder walls so the new rings have a new surface to wear into. some mechanics do it and some don't because there's some risk of cutting through the ceramic coating if you get to aggressive during the process
The miles were low because the bike had done over 100,000 miles and the speedo was on its second time around. I had a 1980 XJ 650 four cylinder Yamaha. I changed the rings at 100.000 miles. It went like new again and I sold it with only 38,000 miles as the speedo was on its second time around. I work at Yamaha so it did not cost much to do the work. I told the buyers that it had been around the clock once and I had the receipts for the rings that I had installed. They took it for a ride, bought it and away they went.
Great instructional video!!!! The only thing I would have done differently is when removing the circlip from the piston wrist pin is that I would stuff a rag around the con rod on the bottom end to prevent the circlip from accidently falling down into the bottom end. I can speak from experience because I have done that very thing. I had to put a magnet on a rod and probe around the bottom end where the crank shaft was and then I was able to retrieve it. It took a long time but I finally found it. It was very frustrating and took some time but I am glad I located it. I would not want that thing rattling around the crank case! LOL. BTW, How many miles were on the bike before you did the top end?
CB Keith dont be silly. This motorcycle was a GOOD buy. If only the rings needed to be replaced to have a good running motorcycle again then that is a GOOD BUY.
So you took apart two thirds of the bike and you didn’t have to. Lol. Get a chilton or other shop manual before you attempt this... pulling the motor doesn’t require this much work.
