Glad you mentioned the clutch slave at the end Del as its payday tomorrow and that's something I had forgotten to add to the list. The outside seal had a right split in it. Hopefully the weather holds out tomorrow as a ride to Route 59 bikers cafe in on the cards. Been such a long time with the bike off the road. Awesome video once again and loved the dialogue! Oh and the use of the wifes toothbrush again 😅 the old humour is timeless. Ps remember the great advice you gave on prolonging the life of the chain as they are expensive. So changing the front sprocket three times to get maximum wear out of it!

Couldn't tell from the video, but if not already fitted there's a standard oil filter adapter you can get for the XJR that might be worth a look.

I spent big money years ago for a stud setting kit from the $nap-on truck and don't ever remember using it. 😁 Always seemed quicker to just use a double nut. I really like the trick you showed with the split nut though. So many gems in these videos and they are very much appreciated ! Cheers and thanks, Del and Penny ! ❤👍👍

Thank so much Rick.. i love that there is always a "tool from the truck" that we can "add to the account", when most of the time the jobs they do are things we can get round with hand tools and common sense.. making them effectively just convenience items made to make the tool companies wealthy... that's not to say there isn't a use for specialist tools, of course there is.. but many are just there to serve the catalogue. Got another little gem coming up shortly for getting brake caliper pistons out with a regular socket.. (Ducks to dodge the incoming Snap-on catalogue wrapped round a brick..lol) !

I really liked the fact that you guys chose black & white for the "past" part, where the tire was removed, as if we were watching a familiar old re-run on TV, then popping back In Living Color (or should I say colour? :) for the current part! Vey well done, D&P! I really like splitting the nut to make yourself some threaded vice jaws! I've never thought of that one! Learn somethin' new every day!

Hi Tommy, sad the split nut didn't work this time, problem was the stud is a metric fine thread and I didn't have the right size nuts to split, so had to use one of the old sprocket nuts and they have the flange edge, meaning you can't split and fit two at the same time, where you can then drop them both in a vice and get a proper grip on it!.... Just doing what works mate and getting round the little niggles.... glad you enjoyed!

I was once told when choosing sprocket sizes both should ideally have mathematical prime numbers of teeth to prevent any uneven wear and maximize chain life. Of course this may not be possible for absolutely perfect gearing, but in principal what’s your opinion of this theory?

Hi Del, great tutorial as usual, thanks. I'm confused by the rear spindle position to achieve the correct tension as it only allows for 10 mm adjustment. Is this fairly standard for motorbikes and how long would you expect the chain to last? I have never thought to look at this when fitting a new chain, just concentrating on getting correct tension so I haven't considered this before.

If you buy the right chain and sprockets set, it should set the axle in the centre of the swing arm slot, or thereabouts, and that's with the tension of the chain set correctly... from this point to fully worn out, your axle won't move backwards more than about 10mm... and you should have at least 20mm, or more, of space... if not, you may have the wrong length chain, you can check spec with any factory resource.

Another box ticked off with the XJR. And, as usual, a lot of good tips & tricks. Thanks, mate. Günter/Nürnberg PS: I prefer 1 tooth less in the front sprocket for such mighty bikes, giving better thump on the roads. I'm not a motorway fan, never exceed 80 mph.

Yes mate, me too... I would always sacrifice top speed for acceleration. I think with this previous owner it was done for economy, he clearly cruised in straight lines for many miles!

Best thing I ever did was install a 15 tooth sprocket in place of the 16 that was factory on my ZX9. Nothing earth shattering for acceleration etc but made the bike come alive and seem so much easier to manage in traffic. The difference was easily accommodated without replacing the chain at the time as the circumference wasn't beyond the limits of adjusting the rear wheel to suit. Yes, the speedo reads faster but I've learned to figure it out using my phone as a GPS speedo. Speedo healers are just too expensive.

Good call, the ZX9 is an absolute legend of a bike, far superior to the 12R imo, so flexible and easy to ride.. and you're right, 1 tooth down on the front does really 'wake' them up... there's nothing to say that the factory gets it right first time on these bikes, the Aprilia Mille early models were a fine example, they needed 2 up and 1 down and they were perfect! And I think the factory's listen, because the later models came with that.

Stock is fine for most people, that is why we have choices, though some bikes are twitchy as there are some changes to lower the throttle response, while for others you can go the speed limit and still be in first gear and make it more usable in the city.

Thanks mate, I can't believe how popular this series has become, I think it goes to show what a wonderfully successful bike the XJR was and what a shame it is that they've now deleted production, in fact, what a shame all the air cooled bikes are gone, we'll be the last generation to ride these glorious machines. Be wary of following torque settings online if it's not the exact model you have, and even then double check with a trusted service manual because even on similar bikes, similar parts, they can have different settings... better safe than sorry mate.

Never stop learning watching this channel. 👍 I tighten the front nut sprocket once the new chain is fitted and put it in first gear or jam the rear wheel. Not sure if that’s correct but seems to work . I still watch the old Video of changing penny triumph chain and sprocket as a refresher as I still have the same chain tool .

Thanks Mark, yeah, what ever works, i wanted the nut torqued up now and tab locked Before i go any further.. i won't be able to use your method for now as i still need to set the wheel and brakes after refurb later, and i need to fit the cover in the next video as the slave cylinder sits on it ! somtimes with a project you have to do things in a different order as you work through the jobs.. Having taken the swinging arm out to do the bearings, i simply slipped the old chain out at the same time in one peace without separating it, so it was a continuos loop still...it's going in the bin anyway, and i needed to loop it round the axle temporarily to hold the sprocket and torque it up, as you saw, so needed to cut it... !

I remember XJR to have 18-39 with 112 links, or 17-38 with 110. Never heard of 17-39 combo

@@simon0721 Without checking chassis numbers exactly, then you can't be accurate as that's how spec changes are determined when searching parts, certainly at the dealership anyway!

I just replaced the sprockets and chain while the swingarm was loose. In that case I could keep the chain in one part. The service manual also recommends it that way, because the service interval of the swingarm and chain are the same..

Different bike, but same task. Many thanks for the tricks and short cuts. Until now I thought I’d never be able to remove the front sprocket nut (Bloody hell). BTW…on my bike the torque is 180nM. Gives the rear axle nut it’s run for your money. You the best.

The “nut and bolt on the chain” trick unfortunately did not work for me. Instead I used a ratchet strap around the frame and the rear wheel to keep it from spinning when leveraging the front sprocket nut loose. All in all, you gave me just the right boost of confidence to get ‘er done. For that a BIG thank you.
