Very well done review! I purchased my CRF250L about 3 years ago and did pretty much every hop-up mod you can do to it....even the 305 big bore. I can definitely say the bike is 40%-50% better than stock now, but I just purchased a 2000 KTM EXC 200 which will be taking over 90% of my hardcore off-roading duties and I'm considering selling the CRF250L and getting a XT250 to use as my daily commuter/dual sport expedition bike. Why would I do such a thing? Well, on my last big dual sport trip I averaged between 10-20 miles per hour for the duration of the trip, so power and speed aren't necessary for my adventures, and the biggest riding challenge was dealing with such a top-heavy bike...and picking the bike back up after a fall is quite challenging for me at 5'7" 130 pounds. Even with all the weight reduction I've done to the CRF, the current weight with the aftermarket 3 gallon gas tank is right around 315 pounds. With some weight reduction mods on an XT250, I'm sure I can get the weight down into the 270 range which is just about as light as a non-European dual sport can get. I'm impressed with the XT's stock large tank, low seat height, and despite the low seat height, has 11" of ground clearance compared to the 250L. Who knows....I may just become an XT convert!

Lots of luck with the 20 lb weight reduction. You can get around 10 if you don't put it back on with add ons like skid plates, bark busters and assorted junk on the handlebars. You covered the biggest 2 plus's. Reliability and low seat height. And those are definitely big items.. It's a good bike if not over ridden.

Although you have part of reason, you forgot to comment that the chassis, swingarm, fork and engine of the CRf250L are clearly superior and more modern than the equivalent of the XT250. In addition, in the 2017 version, the ABS can be disconnected. By the way, the CRF is manufactured in the factory that has Honda in Thailand, not in China.

I bought one of these wonderful motorcycles new in January 2015. Most of my riding is done on the back highways of northwest Arkansas where I seek out old abandoned buildings to photograph. The bike does everything I ask of it. It would have been nice to have had a tach on the instrument panel and the LCD display is a little hard to see in bright sunlight. I also find that 55 MPH is maybe a top cruising speed. I have been told that it will run happily all day at 65 MPH but I am very careful with all my motorcycles not to stress the engines. I find the engine to be EXTREMELY well balanced and on the street the cornering and overall handling is fantastic. Another neat thing about this machine is that it has the turning radius of a trails type motorcycle. It is just a great all around bike for the money. A simple 2-valve overhead cam engine with superb fuel injection. Very nicely done video and assessment Sir!

I have owned a CRF250L (year 2017) and currently own a XT250 (year 2015). I paid $4,700 for the Honda (68 miles on it) and I paid $3,200 for the Yamaha (1,300 miles on it). I must say that the Honda's suspension is superior. That said..... I went with the XT250 (actually, two of them) after deciding that the frame and seat height better suited us, plus the XT weighs less. For our limited amount of Off-Road use, it just made sense to us.

I have both. They're both great, but different. I ended up riding the Honda more, but mostly because there's not many dirt roads around here and I end up on the street most often. I still love the Yamaha for off road. So light, and simple.

Mant riders who think they'll do 70% off-road and 30% pavement end up riding 70% on the road, if they don't live in the hills or desert. It takes some riding to get out of town to do some slow-speed off roading, if you count the miles it's often 50/50 or less.

I opted for the honda crf250l due to its reliability and its looks, I wanted air cooled like my xr400 !! I have had the bike 3 years now and have covered 68000 miles on it, I use it everyday for a commute and use it offered at weekends with my pals, only extra is an fmf q4 tailpipe to improve the bean can sound!! and a rear rack for my give back box, I change the oil and filter every 2000 miles and the airlifted and spark plug every 5000 miles, I ran the bike in nice and steady over 1000 miles before i started to use it to travel to work on the motorway. the bike has NEVER let me down in winter or summer nor has it shown signs of Chinese build quality!! Honda all the way

I'd like to see that bike get a larger fuel tank, and then update the brake and shift pedals to be pivoting. Otherwise a good choice for sure.

Sorry but the engine of the Yamaha XT 250 is strictly air cooled as opposed to the addition of oil cooling. otherwise there would be a small radiator heat exchanger somewhere on the motorcycle. I bought a 2014 Yamaha XT 250 like you did and love it. I put a little larger primary sprocket on it for just a little more top end speed. You are absolutely correct. Motorcycles built in Japan are far superior to machines manufactured in China. Great video dude!!

Hello vac33, I'm not marketing for Yamaha, this was strictly a low budget private party production. However, I went through a rather exhaustive search and analysis for a bike specific to my needs and I wanted to share what I learned for others who may be deciding on their new ride. I did like the Honda very much, and if I was buying for 75% road and 25% off-road it may very well have been my preferred choice because of the water-cooled dual cam engine and 6 speed gearbox. Instead, my focus is for primarily off-road riding, and I went with simpler arrangement with what I think will be a more nimble and responsive off-road machine.

+juv 796 Thanks for your analysis. I like the 30lbs saved, and the lower seat height as well as in the country I plan to buy it is about $700 cheaper than the CRF. Do you think this bike can handle hot (100+) humid tropical climate in very congested stop/go traffic without a radiator? I'm sure it would do ok otherwise they would not sell it in the country, but I wonder what issues might arise. In my book i think the xt250 is going to probably have the same power as the crf, so its really the 3 items I mentioned above that have me wanting to get this bike, its just a slight concern about sitting in sometimes 3mph traffic for an hour or so that might cause an air cooled engine to have issues. What do you think about this? Sorry im just not savvy or experienced enough with bikes to know.

Have you thought about fabricating a mount and adding a 12v fan to help with cooling? I've not seen this on an air-cooled bike, but in theory it should at least help.
@jbouchard4877
@jbouchard4877 7 лет назад
A cooling fan would be a waste of time. I've never had an overheating issue with my XT250. We also have a TW200. That's can over heat sometimes. But that's only when we do too much low speed riding. We simply adjust our riding and we're fine. Plus a cooling fan would just be ugly. If you're really concerned about it. You can add an oil cooler. They're simple and don't look too bad on a bike

I feel like people who overheat there bikes. 1. don't do proper regular matiance 2. probably beginner riders because like you said, you can adjust your speed/rideing if you can tell that the bike needs to be " blown out" iv been rideing dirtbikes my entire life, on the track, trails and now the road, 2 strokes and 4 strokes iv owned em all. never over heated a bike befor. Fouled a spark plug 1 or 200 times, but that's it.

Some great points to consider 👍 and everything I have researched online adds up ( except that the CRF 250L is made in Thailand 🇹🇭 which is excellent build quality as well , the Thai people take pride in their work ) But I have to agree with you on your reasons for choosing the Yamaha XT250 over the Honda CRF 250 L , it’s a much more practical and maintenance free bike for sure , as well as better off road manners ( just the lighter weight and nimbleness alone wins that battle) You can pack that bike like a mule too . The more informed I am about this little bike , the more I’m starting to like it .

I hope to start adding videos as the riding season arrives. With the first day of spring, I'm anxious to get out and ride the XT250 however here in Massachusetts we have a light dusting of snow happening this evening with limited accumulation expected before a melt tomorrow. Only problem now are the horrific roads, a mess of pot holes, salt, dirt with chunks of asphalt all over; perfect for a DP bike.

Great video juv 796. I agree to disagree. Although the video seems to point out that the Yamaha is superior in almost every category, I would have to say you missed something. Something big. Although the Yamaha is lighter and a better value, the Honda has far superior suspension. The Yamaha forks and rear monoshock are complete garbage. Suspension has a lot to do with an off-road motorcycle, so I think you should have at least covered that. Thanks.

I own both bikes ( '14 Honda, '08 Yamaha) and agree with 95% of what you said. Ever check out what you have to do to adjust valves on a CRF? Both are bone stock, I don't take either one far off road, but gotta say the CRF likes 65mph more than the XT. It complains a bit because of the 5 vs. 6 speed, and the CRF is counter-balanced, which, if I'm not mistaken, the XT is not. Good vid!

Nice video. Currently trying to choose between these and the Kawasaki. You made good points in favor of the Yamaha. I believe the weight difference is the most intriguing difference to me. Seems like the Honda may be a little more developed for the road side of duel sport compared to the Yamaha.
@juv7964
@juv7964 9 лет назад
I concur that the Honda lends itself to be better suited for the road, it has more power, a six speed gear box and a bit more weight which all lend to a little more comfort at speed. My XT250 is lots of fun on secondary roads, tolerable on the highway, and great on technical off-road. When running at 65 MPH I feel like I'm really pushing the XT250 and prefer to keep speeds at 60 MPH or below. I made a long ride from near Cap Cod, MA to the Canadian boarder north of Jay Peak, VT, about 450 miles each way. This trip was all road heading north, and then 50% dirt road heading south. The ride up was terrific especially the 75% of riding that was on secondary roads, however I had about 25% on highway which was less fun. The return ride on dirt fire roads and secondary roads was a perfect setting for the XT250. The bike is responsive and flick-able, a real joy to play with. Overall, this trip may have been more enjoyable on the CRF250L because there was no technical off-road riding. Locally, I ride in state forests that have technical single track and challenging fire roads that have me appreciating the lighter weight Yamaha over an CRF. However if I were to really get serious I'd consider the lightweight KTM' street legal 350 EXC F.. The KTM is 90 pounds lighter than the CRF and will clock nearly 100 MPH at top speed. Still very happy with the XT250 and if offered an even trade for a CRF250L I would happily decline. Don't ask me about the KTM :)
@NorthwoodsNomad
@NorthwoodsNomad 5 лет назад
juv 796 I had a 2015 KTM 350 EXC-F . Excellent bike ! The only downfall to the EXC’s are the very short maintenance intervals. You’d have been overdue for an oil change before you got back from your 900 mile round trip. Filters , parts and overall maintenance costs are twice the cost of the XT 250 , or Honda CRF 250L . And the purchase price of the KTM is also double the price. I sold mine , was happy to enjoy it while I had it , but I was actually happier the day I sold it . Now I’m looking at replacing it with something else just like your XT 250 , simple , easy to ride , practical for MY needs ( I’m not doing hound&hare scrambles or GNCC Enduro cross competition rides , and that’s what that KTM 350 EXC-F is designed for ) Just an old guy who wants trail ride and enjoy the scenery. Thanks for sharing this video 👍

My wife wants a dual sport, because I have a DRZ400S and she would also like to ride with me. I think the XT would be a better choice than the CRF now that I see the differences. She can't even touch the ground on my 400, so a DRZ for her is out of the question. Also the power of the 400 would probably be a bit too much for her.

The Kawaski similar to the the Honda has a tall seat height , making if very uncomfortable for me to get on or stop at a light with my foot down. The problem with the Yamaha is there isn't much on the aftermarket for it. Nobody makes a larger fuel tank for it. Only 2 companies even make a skid plate for it. The Honda has all kinds if stuff available. Even the other Yamaha the WRF 250 L has a lot of stuff available for it. The XT not so much.

I'm Selling my CRF250L to get an XT250 because of the radiator. Its no good for short trips. It takes forever to warm up and because of the short trips the oil never has a chance to burn off any moister/condensation so the oil turns milky.
@MrDingaling007
@MrDingaling007 4 года назад
@Hard Facts ok top dawg. Then explain why I don't consume Coolant, and why the oil is back to clean honey amber colour after giving it some long rides to get it fully upto operating temperature for long periods. I stopped allowing these short rides that didn't let it warm up. So I kept the bike. Did you take Into Account, high humidity environment along with consistent short rides?

@Hard Facts "All engines get fuel dilution to some degree. If you do lots of cold starts, short trips, stop-start driving, it’ll be more significant than if you drive regularly on a free-flowing freeway. Because that’s how this works." - Taken from a google search on this general issue from lots of short trips. I believe this is probably what's happened with my situation. There really isn't any other explanation. The long drives need to become regular or I'll face a short engine life.

Also this link discusses the condensation problem which I believe Is the cause. www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/condensation-in-oil.189185/ As long as I get it up to operating temp and avoiding many 2-3min short rides to next area of my property and then shutting off, then the oil stays clean.

Having owned both bikes, I definitely feel that the XT250 is a better bike. This is especially true if you ride off road. The CRF250L is great, but it is just too heavy. While the weight helps a little bit on the street, you definitely feel it in the dirt. Even after changing the gearing on my CRF250L to make it more dirt friendly, the engine on the XT250 is perfect for dirt riding and the wide 5th gear handles the street pretty well. I agree on all the other points though. I did some pretty rough off road riding when I had mine and never had the air cooled motor overheat.

Now please mate, get your facts correct at least! Honda is made in Thailand like many many other bike models from Honda, Kawasaki, Ducati, Triumph and soon HD too. Build quality is on pair with japanese builds if not already better. An air and oil cooled engine will have bigger fluctuations in temprature and thus wear. Oil will need to be changed more often, much more often! The Crf has oil changes intervals of 12 k kms and ditto valve adjustment every 24 k kms. What about the XT? Every 3 k on both maybe? (I couldnt find the specs...) The Yamaha has a couple of advantages: 1. Its lighter 2. It carries 0,5 US gallons of fuel more than the Crf. The Honda has: 1. More power 2. Longer oil and valve check intervals 3. Better reliability with water cooled engine. 4. An engine with more low and mid end grunt compared to the Yamaha.
@MrDingaling007
@MrDingaling007 4 года назад
Ah just no. Wrong on so many counts. You cant beat made in Japan full stop. Air cooled motorcycles have clocked up some insane mileage. My CRF250L like many others has been plagued with some common issues such as the timing belt tensioner lets the chain flap around making a horrible racket, Also such as the oil turning milky if used mostly for short trips because they don't get hot enough to burn off any moisture like an aircooled engine so you end up having to change the oil a lot more frequently anyway. Like the gear selector shaft that breaks very easy and seems to be made of a soft metal. I really think Made in Thailand Honda sucks compared to MIJ Honda. So im selling my CRF250L with 3000km's on the clock and going for an XT250. I would say because the XT250 is aircooled and simpler less to go wrong its going to be more reliable.
@KurtGAndersen

CD You are truely and totally off and so totally wrong in absolutely all ways. I live in Thailand were these bikes are made and its pretty damn hot here too. Around 40 degrees celcius for the moment. I havent heard any Crf owners having problems with oil turning into «milk» and I have a pretty extensive knowledge of Crf owners, and I frequent a lot of Crf forums online too. And of course you have no links to find information about your horribly wrong claims about these bikes. And thats because they are wrong! False! Untrue! And that makes you a pathetic liar btw... Honda have made bikes in Thailand for at least 50 years and the quality and the reliability of the bikes are beyond fantastic. I just took a look outside the apartmentblock where I live. There were 6 Hondas 100-125 cc parked there. And I checked th ODO of them all. The lowest was 37 k kms, the rest had between 49 and 93 k kms on the ODO. And I can assure it is all with minimum maintainance as the thais dont take that part too seriously. And who knows, maybe the ODO cable was broken on some of them, maybe the ODO had gone througb one cycle and had passed 100 k kms one some of them - as the ODOs on those small bikes only goes to 99 999 kms. Bad quality Hondas - eyh? Japanese made Hondas would never get the same milage! Period! Honda make most of their small and medium sized bikes in - up to 650 cc in Thailand. Why do you think? Because the quality is fantastic! The Crf model has of course its weak spots just like any other bike model. On the Crf the subframe is a weak spot and will crack and break if put under too much loads and strain. It happend once on Steaph Jeavons, the welsh woman who took her Crf around the world and rode on all 7 continents of the world with her Crf. 90 k miles I think she did alltogether. Not too bad for a 250 cc bike.... I just took my Crf for a 5000 km Laos trip and I really trashed it around on bad roads, lots of kms on gravel and broken up pavement. A turn signal broke off and I needed to change the steering head bearings when I got back here, but those are wear parts on such a bike. Except from that it was just to wash of the dirt and mud off it - and its better than new! Now on 40 k kms already At last I will cite a long time expat here in Thailand who owns a rental shop of small Honda motorbikes (all made in Thailand of course) and this is what he told me about the Hondas in his rental fleet: Warning - british swearing and accent is applied «You can fekkin drop ten handgranades on them and they will still start and work perfectly»

@@KurtGAndersen Sorry I'm totally wrong in all ways? You actually said- "Build quality is on pair with japanese builds if not already better." Oh you live in Thailand too? Do me a favour, get in your CRF250L or your liquid cooled car, drive it 500meters down the road, dont let it get up to operating temperature! ok now you can turn it off, when its cold again repeat driving it these short distances multiple times day. Let that rack up over a month or so and send that oil sample off for analysis. Oh what's that? they report fuel and moisture content in your oil? but how could that be possible? Ok so the above is an issue for anything that doesn't get hot enough to burn off dilution/contaminants. Its well known in fact. Also well known is how much quicker an aircooled engine warms up compared to a liquid cooled engine. Next, look you lazy bugger the cam chain tensioner issue: www.google.com/search?q=honda+crf250l+cam+tensioner&ie=&oe= Oh would you look at that Honda had a recall about that weak shaft: thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/1302895-crf250l-transmission-shaft-recall/ Mate ive seen Hondas, Yamahas , Suzuki's and Kwakkas all achieve these high km's and yes on aircooled engines. Please pull your head out and settle down. I'm not attacking Honda! I love Honda! Im saying in my particular use case the XT250 is a better option! And also telling you made in Japan is superior don't even try to argue this well known fact!

CD A little embarrasing for someone that try to prove how bad the Crf that you posted a link to a person that is writing he MIGHT have the same cam chain tensioner problem that he had 3 times with his KLX? Whatever trying to prove its certainly wrong. But as I mentioned above - any bike model has some weak spots and certainly also the Crf. In any used engineoil there will be traces of fuel and liquids. Its because of the socalled blowby gases, unburnt fuel/air mixture that slip though the piston rings. Of course there will be some of that in any used engine oil. And in an aircooled engine were the tempratur varies much more than in an liquid cooled engine the chances of this being more evident is of course bigger. So again your claims are completely wrong. Learn some basics basics how an engine works before you try to educate others mate.

Your 3rd reason is a big one for shorter folks.. For serious trail riding when you have to put your feet down occasionally, they actually hit the ground instead of dangling in the air.. Beginners to intermediate riders love this. Even though it's lighter weight than some, this bike would be so much better if it went on a 20 to 30lb weight diet... Still the best for the average rider, especially the inseam challenged folks..

I (still)have a 2008 xt250 that I bought in 2009 to replace my 1971 Kawasaki model F-7, 175cc 2-stroke that I brought new April 1971. Right off, I sure missed my compression release 2-stroke Jake brake. But more than that, I found out that for deer season off road riding, I could not get a smaller counter sprocket for the more technical off road riding I would be doing. I would want to change the 15 tooth front sprocket down to a 12 or 13 tooth for lower over all gearing. None are available. So you are stuck with stock factory gearing, which was worthless for the terrain I encounter when back woods hunting. And changing the rear sprocket and using a longer chain is more trouble than it's worth. I still have the bike, just dont use it off road on anything more than a forest service road. No serious single track Trail riding. Cheers...

studpum Go sit on the bikes. That is what I did to determine what would have worked for me. If your doing mainly street, the Honda may be a better choice, however price point may drive you to a Xt250. I think the WR250R is a great bike however the seat height was about 2 inches too high and I was not comfortable always laying the bike on its side to mount and stop. I then decided I would shop for an affordable CRF250L or XT250, the latter turned out to be the best financial deal for me.

I have a 2014 Yamaha XT 250 and it is no way oil cooled. If it was there would be a small oil radiator on the bottom frame of this motorcycle. Despite this it is an very well constructed bike. It is not very fast so I installed a little larger primary sprocket. It is a great machine for riding highway back roads, but do not attempt to ride it on an interstate highway as you will find the revs wind out pretty quickly.

I would really like something with more power but I've found Riding a tall heavy bike in the woods is not much fun in technical stuff.. it would be sweet if the would stuff a 450 in this frame. Yousef Al-Sabah No motorbike is designed to run at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). Take a Prius to the race track and smash the pedal to the floorboard will yield a fraction of the 52 MPG it normally gets. I have a Ducati Monster, normal riding I get about 40 MPG, if I twist the throttle hard I'm probably less than 30. I purchased the XT250 to do 70% trail time, if I had planned a different ratio of on/off road I may have purchased a larger displacement bike providing better road performance, however on trail I can speed along as fast as I want or need to with the 250.

I believe the XT250 is a great bike, however; I think you may be over-estimating the air cooled vs liquid cooled question. Me (WR250) and my riding partner (CRF250L) often find ourselves deep on single tracks pushing our bikes very hard and the liquid-cooled pays off in the end because our bikes never overheat. All of the DRZ400 guys that ride with us often overheat as least once throughout the day. For you to say that air-cooled is better for the trails is simple not correct. The YZ250 and the YZ250F are liquid cooled for a reason.

@juv7964
@juv7964 9 лет назад
Kamotion I've never had any problems with overheating on the XT250 and Ive never read any comments suggesting that overheating is a problem on Xt250; the engine is relatively small displacement, and I'm not pushing the bike anywhere near it's limits through trails so I would be surprised to ever experience this. I recently completed a 900 mile event, and about half of that was road some long highway stretches; temps reached into 80s and no issues.
@noyopacific
@noyopacific 7 лет назад
Liquid-cooled may extend your limits under the most extreme heat but air/oil-cooled pays off in the end because the radiator won't get smashed in a fall and the coolant never leaks into the engine. If it ever got so hot my air-cooled bike didn't like it I'd be sitting in the shade having a cold one anyway. ;-)
@johnscribb6731
@johnscribb6731 6 лет назад
Water cooled is better when you want to tax your bike out. However, I laid my liquid cooled KLR250 down on some rocks and put a hole in my radiator. Very easy to do. I was lucky a friend with me had some JB weld putty and a bottle of water or I would have been overheating the whole way home. Air cooled motors are the way to go off-road when reliability is #1 concern. It's just one less major thing to go wrong when you lay your bike down on some rocks, and you will.

@juv7964
@juv7964 9 лет назад
I think the WR250R/X is a fantastic bike, and a great dual purpose machine. It is a different beast than the XT250, yes more capable in many ways, but also not necessarily a better bike for some off-road conditions and for all rider types. It is a more complex bike with more systems to maintain, and has much higher seat. Of course it provides more power, more suspension travel, and that supports more aggressive rider style. It's a great example of selecting the bike for what you plan to do, and for your capabilities. I thought it was the perfect bike for me, until I hopped on it and realized that in very tight riding it would be difficult to manage because of seat height, and had more power and travel than I would ever use. That's what led me to the XT250.

While the WR is able to handle moderate terrain at higher speeds, for the most difficult rocky, slippery, steep trails the xt250 will leave almost any plated bike including the WR250R behind. This is why the XT225-250 is the favorite dual sport for use on the ultra-challenging Rubicon Trail. (Look it up if you like.) I don't own the XT250 and have no need to defend my choice but these are simply the facts. Every motorcycle design is the result of many compromises.

Have you ever ridden an XT225 in comparison to the 250? I understand the older bike is a bit lighter still but obviously would be a little down on power in comparison. I'm really in the market for something like this - I had a DRZ400S that had gobs of torque but I just found it too tall and heavy for me offroad and didn't really use all that much power on the trail. I am NOT a small person though at 250lbs so there is going to be a a trade off there. I'm mainly just trying to find the lightest dual sport I can afford that will have enough power to putt around through the woods.

My video is intended to highlight characteristics that influenced my selection of the Yamaha, and why my intended riding would be best met by the Yamaha XT250. If for example I intended to use it more on street, then the Honda may have been my choice. So, be sure to evaluate what type of riding you plan to be doing. Also, Taiwan is actually referred to as the Republic of China, credit to Wikipedia below: "Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan."

dunno yolo, xt250 is fuel injected. CRF250L is made in Thailand but most American are lousy in geography anyway.

juv 796 I think xt250 seat height 32-33" should fit the most buyers out there. I'm not getting the WR250R mainly becoz of its 36.2" seat, Crazy. How many riders have 36" inseam?

***** I actually climbed on a used WR250R and quickly realized that it would be way too much bike for my limited off-road skills. I was unable to double toe touch with any real confidence while seated and figured it would be a trail disaster for me when working through tight and gnarly spots when it's best to slowly work your way along. I'm sure there are plenty of skilled riders who would punch a WR250R around trails without a hitch, just not me. Out of the box, the WR250R is built for a more aggressive riding style than the XT250 and it's able to handle more suspension travel; thus the much higher seating position.

I say Yamaha made the WR250R too geared toward x-cross/dirt riding and not street. This put off a lot of potential buyer. The population of 6' or higher riders out there is pretty slim compare to under 6' riders.

How is standing up and riding on it? I'm 5' 9" as well...
@juv7964
@juv7964 9 лет назад
80hitultracombo I've put about 300 miles on the bike, both single track and fire roads. I'm 5' 9" and find the bike to be reasonably comfortable standing; I think I would appreciate a handlebar lift of about an inch when standing, but I'm not sure I'd like that when sitting. So for now I'm just continuing with factory set-up. I have a scheduled ride of the Puppy Dog trail from Jay Peak VT down to CT mostly easy off-road riding; I'll report back after that event which will be a total of about 750 miles for me as a round trip; half of which will be road getting to Jay, the other half returning on the Puppy Dog.

80hitultracombo I've had a couple of long rides.. did a 900 miler from the Canadian boarder into Massachusetts via dirt road; it referred to as the Puppy Dog Trail. I did a bit of stand-up and generally I find it acceptable, not perfect, I could probably use a 1" handlebar riser, but I'm not sure I'd do that because it will alter my arms while seated. So, for the time being I'm just riding as is and will eventually determine what if any mods I make.

The yamaha is simple old school technology but man its basic and fugly. The honda is a bit more expensive but its a bit more gun and trendy. It looks like a bike should look

Oh yeah that plated air cooled bore and fuel injection is such old school tech! in all seriousness I'm selling the CRF250L as its no good for short trips, doesn't get hot enough to burn off condensation which is affected the oil. Air cooled all the way for me.
