I was helping a friend fix a Yamaha XT350 recently, it was a bit rough around the edges but I was tasked with fixing a base basket leak. Found a few other things to fix as well. These are simple old air cooled engines.

I couldn’t get this bike to run correctly, I tried a lot of stuff. I’m pretty sure the piston/rings/cylinder needed to be replaced because compression numbers were not great but I did the best with what I had.

I love the old xt 350, definitely worth working on. Excellent bike, poor suspension, still an amazing bike for the average price.

I only rode this one a bit, the suspension was awful. I rarely see them for sale near me, but when I do the prices are not great. Cool bikes anyway.

I have had 3 of these 350’s and 2 of the 600’s. In San Francisco growing up in the 80’s these were the cats meow. The SFPD had a gang of them too. But our bikes had to have lights and blinkers so these and Honda XLs were the go to. They cost $2850 for the xt350 and $3300 for the xt600 right about 1987-88. They were always pretty bulletproof and ran strong. The 350’s suffered on the freeway but were great around town and through traffic parks and short cuts.

Yeah, I remember seeing police departments with these. In the 80’s the choices were pretty limited. It’s amazing how good bikes are now and people still complain that they are a few pounds heavier than the competition.

It’s likely to happen, but it might be a bit.

I like using old sandwich bags too. The mayonnaise keeps the bolts from rusting 😁

100% truth. I wasn’t really too pleased about tearing it apart just to do the gasket. The cylinder head was in bad shape as well. Overall, the condition of the bike wasn’t good enough to warrant much repair in my opinion but I couldn’t convince the owner of that.

Im about to attempt a valve cover gasket replacement. I have oil dripping from that gasket currently. I believe its just 4 head bolts to remove it but I was curious, is there any special step to take to ensure the new gasket is seated and any tips? I never see that gasket getting put back on in videos. Thanks

Just the valve cover gasket, you can put a bit of sealant on it to make sure it stays in place. The manual has the torque specifications.

No! Thanks for reminding me! I have been holding onto it for my friend, it was his dad’s. I want him to be the one to fire it and I want him to keep it.

A typical roach bike. Unfortunately, to be done right, a total rebuild should have been done. Vintage bikes are just not worth working on unless your doingbthe work yourself. Paying $80 + dollars an hour labor rate quickly exceeds the value of such a bike.

Yes, agreed. I did exactly what the owner wanted, but wasn’t really happy about it.
