In this sixth part in our video diary of the recommissioning work that we're doing on our 1997 Yamaha XV535 Virago project bike, we replace the Air Filter and the Fuel Filter. In actual fact, it turned out that the Air Filter did not need replacing but we go through the motions so you'll learn how to do this. We didn't show it on camera but the Fuel Filter was full of detritus and definitely needed changing. You'll also learn how to remove and refit the Fuel Tank as the Air Filter conveniently (not) sits right under the Fuel Tank.

I am a new biker and bought an xv535 after passing my test and loving it. Mine was not used much and although it ran ok, it would cut out when exactly 5l of fuel was used. It didn't matter if the fuel switch was on main or reserve. It was a bit slow to start and easy to stall when idling at traffic lights. I find this video and others but no info on the net about what could be the problem. I got quoted between 300 and 1000 to diagnose and fix the problem (one guy said it was the fuel switch solenoid but i figured it couldn't be that). I thought it could be the carbs but when i opened them, they were pristine. In the end, I changed the fuel filter myself (it cost just 10 euros) and it fixed the problem. Couldn't believe it was something so simple but there was a tiny bit of gunk in the filter that was restricting the fuel flowing correctly. Thanks for your video!

Well done on finding the problem. As you say, changing the fuel filter is an inexpensive and simple task. Odd about the 5l issue. Even clean-looking carbs can have issues. We gave the carbs a basic in-situ clean but still had some issues and we've taken them off for a more in-depth clean and repair. We'll be posting that video, shortly. Glad you've solved your problem, so cheaply.

Reserve tank valve has a common problem of binding into place even if it’s energized by the switch you won’t be able to use the extra fuel if the valve is stuck, PIA to get it out too

My tank had rubber washers inside the flange and plastic washer outside? Second hand so not too sure if its been cocked up sometime but more cushion seems to make sense.

Use JIS screwdrivers not Philips screwdrivers. Great videos.

We do try to remember to say JIS. You're right that there's a big difference and that using a Phillips will mangle the screws.
