Bill, i've downloaded the file but cannot figure out how to get them to specific locations on my YC (just got it today) i've been waiting for it knowing i would get your sounds! killer !
@billyruss
@billyruss 2 года назад
Hi there! I assume that you've unzipped the file and now have 7 separate files on your memory stick (YC LsPage A -G). The sounds are arranged by Live Set Page File (eight sounds in each one), so it's possibly easiest just to copy one of the Page Files into a blank Page on the YC (e.g. 20) and move them around after. However, if you want to do just one sound: 1. Choose a blank patch on the YC. 2. Press the Menu button and select File (use the wheel to the left of the screen to scroll through items and press it to select). 3. Select Live Set Page File and then Load. 4. Choose one of the YC LsPage files and press Enter again. 5. Select Load Live Set Sound. A list of the eight files in that sound page will be displayed. 6. Select the sound you want to copy and press Enter. 7. Select the option to Load to Sound 20-1 (or whatever) and press Enter. The individual sound will now be loaded into the blank location you chose on the YC. Hope this helps; there's more info on page 25 of the user guide: jp.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/1311174/yc61_en_om_a0.pdf

@@billyruss thanks so much... indeed up copying all of them ( page at a time). great stuff! I'm getting up to speed pretty quickly... its been MINUTE.... been in the laptop / MainStage world for a bit. LOL i haven't had a keyboard with it's own sounds for some time. really hoping this makes things simpler. i got the 73 and seriously considered the 88 (still thinking' bout it) but the 73 does have that old EP feel, which is pretty dang cool! thanks for the help!

Thanks for your kind comments! As I think I've said somewhere in these comments, I'm not really a sound designer as such - I didn't do much to program the basic waveforms or anything, it was just a matter of picking a base sound and then messing around with the various onboard effects units to get a sound I liked 🙂

Thanks again Bill. You obviously have released the power inside this one! I bought a Nord Electro 5 73 a few years a go these are the the sounds I was hoping to achieve. The EPs I have got somewhere with and the organ too but the rest -samples, Acoustic pianos are to me lifeless. I think this Yamaha has surpassed it and is more versatile! Do you gig with this YC61? Cheers, Andy
@billyruss
@billyruss 2 года назад
It's a tricky one! I've been gigging with a Nord Stage 73 (Mk I!) for years and bought the YC because I liked the look and sound of it (and because it would be lighter to gig with!). I liked the pianos, and I agree that the "extra" sounds go way further than the Nord, and are really high-quality (I tried a newer Nord recently, and wasn't that impressed with even the newer additions, for all the extra dosh it was going to cost). Having said this, I found the organs on the YC harsher than the Stage - they cut through the mix more but, for the music we were doing, the rest of the band and myself all thought that the warmer sound of the Nord fitted better. The other advantage of the Stage is that it has aftertouch - this may seem a bit of a strange requirement for a keyboard that is primarily designed for organs and pianos, but I use it to change the speed on the rotary effect whilst my hands are elsewhere (and I've got one foot on the swell pedal). I did play a gig with a blues band a couple of months ago, which didn't require anything but organs and pianos, so I took both keyboards along, and it was a nice luxury to be able to pick and choose from the best of both!
@andrewgleave2357
@andrewgleave2357 2 года назад
I think you are very similar to me - gigging for years and also remember the great analog gear. Thing is I might not be able to lift some of the old gear now! . I could not pick up an 88 Stage 3 that easily so I got the Electro HP 73. The Rhodes and organs are pretty fat and full of character and it's only 24lbs in weight so the Yamaha CP4 went. Love the CP88 but again not sure about the 40lbs or so weight. I have loads of great modules eg TX7 , EX8000, Motif Rack, etc so I have been using them to get more sonic variety and power. Just more journeys into the venue. Thanks Bill for the in depth reply much appreciated. Andy
@billyruss
@billyruss 2 года назад
Yep, it's a great thing that the downward shift in weight (of the gear, at least!) has been in direct correlation with age and my unwillingness to hump heavy gear around!

@billyruss 3 месяца назад
Hi there - I've copied the instructions from the blurb above because it is a bit long-winded and not altogether easy to see what you need to do. I assume you have the downloaded patches on a memory stick plugged into the YC. To copy just one sound: 1. Choose a blank patch on the YC (or one you wish to overwrite).

Wow I didn't know the YC was capable of this wide array of sounds. I like the nod to Vangelis with Beaubourg! Great work. I'm very close to getting one of these. But I've come across quite a few video comments and reviews where they say the keybed starts getting really noisy after a few months of use. Have you noticed this?
@billyruss
@billyruss Год назад
Thanks for the comments! I would have to say that, although I didn't notice it at first, I think the keybed now is noisier now than when I first got it. The white keys seem pretty much ok, but the black ones rattle a bit - you can notice this if you just lie your fingertips on a set of black keys and just wiggle them a bit - I'm fairly certain that noise wasn't there to begin with because, like yourself, I'd heard about the keybed issue and was fairly satisfied that there wasn't a problem when I first got the keyboard. It's not a major issue - the keys still seem solid enough and you can't really notice it when you're playing at any kind of volume - though I'd imagine if you were playing through headphones, it might be mildly annoying to anyone else in the room at the time. 🙂

Hey mate, I just wanted to let you know how impressed and grateful I am for this work... and your wonderful playing!!! I have been looking around at buying a few keyboards all in one hit- in a few weeks. Up until now, I have been working for decades with MIDI Controller keyboards and tonnes of VST instruments... all the usual suspects. But I'm working on developing a new MIDI VST, which I think will be very useful... so I decided I need a few keyboards that can make their own sounds. So, I've settled (almost) on the Nord Stage 3 88note, the Yamaha YC88 and also a smaller keyboard such as a 37 note board. Anyway, I came across your video and was so impressed that I have downloaded your patches even before actually having the synth!!! So, yeah... thanks soooo much. Liked, Subbed and commented.

Hi Bill These are absolutely terrific sounds ! - great playing and thanks for downloading. I’m about to pull the trigger on getting the YC73 semi weighted version. I think you’re right that Nord wins through on the Organ and certain EPs, but the only thing I couldn’t live with was the Nord HP action (Nords 73/76 note version on the Electro/Stage - a really poor action for such an expensive keyboard.) I’m hoping that Yamahas history of piano making and solid keybeds will stand me in good stead here as I’m trying to gig with a single keyboard with maybe an iPad with sound module - from what I can see, Yamaha have really got it right with a single lead into the iPad - nothing else needed ! Anyway, thanks again.

As far as I remember, when you access any of the banks, you see a list of the eight patches within that bank. You can then choose a single patch to copy and the location you want to copy it to. Or you could clear yourself a blank bank of eight empty slots, copy one of the banks there and move the sounds around after (that's how I managed to group the sounds in these banks). Probably best to do a backup first! There's a bit about it on p25 of the manual: jp.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/4/1311174/yc61_en_om_a0.pdf

Great video and sounds! I´m thinking about getting hte YC-61 or the Nord electro 5d, like a lot of people I guess... I´m interested in how to manage the sounds in the YC, is it possible to upload new presets like in nord electro? or you can only tweak the existent sound on the keyboard ?¿. I´m interested in hammond, rhodes and be able to play some synths as well, so this is quite important for me. And is true that the hammond i think are better in Nord, but I will miss the pitch bend so much!! The decision is truly hard.... Thanks in advance
@billyruss
@billyruss 2 года назад
Hi there. You can load new presets (like the banks I've uploaded here), but these use the existing samples loaded into the keyboard - you can't actually import new samples in the way that you can with the Nord. The sounds are all pretty good, though as I have said elsewhere in this comments section, I prefer the Hammonds on the Nord. The YC does have pitch and modulation controls (you can hear these in the Lead Synth section, starting at 10:24), by the use of two switches at the top left of the keyboard, but they can seem a bit tricky if you're used to more conventional wheel or joystick controllers.
@museonfilm8919
@museonfilm8919 2 года назад
The monophonic mode with glide, plus the pitch and mod controls, set it totally apart from the Nord Electro 6, in terms of performance. Plus, I think it's sounds much more 'fresh'. (let's face it, the Nord Electro's have been around for a long time now)
@billyruss
@billyruss 2 года назад
The organs on the Nord are definitely warmer though. I've taken to using both live.

Fantastic sounds Bill, that analogue lead 2 has Pat Methany/Lyle Mays written all over it. As a current Nord Electro owner looking to upgrade, this thing has caught my eye a few times. It just seems like a very fun, musical instrument. Hopefully they’ll update the rotary. Are you still happy with it?
@billyruss
@billyruss 2 года назад
Thanks for your kind words! I have used (and continue to use) a Nord Stage 73 for many years, and bought the YC because it was smaller and lighter and I thought it would be easier to gig. I have to say, though, that the organs on the Nord sound warmer and fuller, somehow - and the same goes for the Wurlis. The Yamaha organs are brighter, and cut through more, but I (and the band) preferred tha Nord as a filler sound There's no doubt that the YC has more sounds overall (particularly over my somewhat dated Nord - it's the Mk 1 Stage) and I personally find them a lot more usable than the Nord - but I've stuck with the Nord and use other keyboards for the strings/brass and othr synth stuff. But it's a very close call, and I wouldn't want to part with the YC. One other consideration (for me at least) is the lack of aftertouch on both the Yamaha and the smaller Nords (it's only there on the 73, I think) - not that important when you're playing organs and pianos, you might think, but I use it to vary the rotor speed leaving my other hand to play another keyboard.

There are a variety of organ sounds beyond the Hammond emulations. One labeled F2 is described as "This type recreates a famous British transistor combo organ", , and the one labelled F3 is described in the manual as "This type recreates a famous Italian transistor combo organ", so I guess these would be the best contenders to reproduce those kind of organ sounds.

Hi - not sure whether you've managed this yet... just saw that I never responded to this one. I assume you managed to download the files - unzip and copy to a memory stick which you need to insert in the back of the keyboard. Hope this helps; there's more info on page 25 of the user guide: jp.yamaha.com/files/download/...

Haha.... granted, my jazz piano/hammond technique is not what it might be; my main intent here was to showcase (and offer as a free download) a bunch of new, custom patches that go beyond the ones that the YC ships with as standard. Those with a technique more advanced than mine might appreciate some of the sounds - all I can do is demo them with the skills I have. The point of this demo was not to show off my keyboard technique but to give an idea of how these custom-made patches actually sound. It's had 18k views and, if you read some of the other comments left below, it seems that quite a few have found this extended sound set useful, so I'm happy that the demo has at least fulfilled that part of its intent 🙂
